Post Castro: Always Christ

He was the late Prime Minister Michael Manley’s very good friend.  And as the link above shows,  was one of many prominent personalities  to attend MM’s funeral.

In fact, well  can we remember the famous,  ‘ mountain top ‘ speech; a vision of the two avowed socialists, Fidel Castro and MM, changing the capitalist world. And forging a more egalitarian system!
All of this long before America began to ‘ feel the Burn ( Bernie Sanders campaign to end the disparity between the rich and the middle class).
He was also the target of much hatred especially in Miami, to which city many disillusioned and persecuted Cubans fled in droves.

Cuban-Americans celebrate Fidel Castro’s death in Miami’s Little Havana

So now Fidel, ‘ long live Fidel’, is dead. Having outlived many American presidents who tried to topple him, or at the very least resisted his Communist regime with economic and propaganda tools! Until Obama came along,  ‘ offering an olive branch’….and then cometh Donald Trump. To uphold or to destroy the rapprochement? Who knows!
How Fidel Castro Went From Revolutionary to Ruler
You have to pay to read the entire story in Time magazine but what is available is quite interesting as in 1959 they dubbed him ” The Vengeful Visionary”. Perhaps a metaphor for the western world’s fascination for a leader it never fully understood. Never warmed to, but had to tolerate as his Communist state successfully pushed  education and health care domestically – despite the anti-Castro rhetoric, Jamaica benefited with the  building of many schools and the training of many health care workers; and with similar passion and dedication it sought to  promote ‘freedom’ internationally;  in South Africa, other parts of Africa, South America and in the Caribbean – notably and tragically in Grenada!
But as much as Fidel was admired by some, and reviled by others; and as much as his picture will be on the front page of many newspapers across the globe tomorrow, no one will write about him in the same way the Hymnwriter penned these famous lines, to which I was led this morning in my devotions.

God sent His son, they called Him, Jesus;

He came to love, heal and forgive;

He lived and died to buy my pardon,

An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives!

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,

Because He lives, all fear is gone,

Because I know He holds the future,

And life is worth the living,

Just because He lives!
World leaders will come and go, but no one will write about them, when they die,  in the way Oswald Chambers wrote about Jesus,  in his famous My Utmost for His Highest a few nights ago:

I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do.  John 17:4
The death of Jesus is the performance in history of the very mind of God. There is no room for looking on Jesus as a martyr; his death was not something that happened to him which might have been prevented. His death was the very reason why he came.
Never build your preaching of forgiveness on the fact that God is our Father and He will forgive us becuase He loves us. It is untrue to Jesus Christ’s  revelation of God; it makes the Cross unnecessary, and the Redemption ” much ado about nothing”.
If God does forgive sin, it is because of the death of Christ. God could forgive men in no other way  than by the death of His Son, and Jesus is exalted to be Saviour because of His death……The greatest note of triumph that ever sounded in the ears of a startled universe was that sounded on the Cross of Christ  – ” It is finished”.

That is the last word in the Redemption of Man…….Jesus hates the wrong in man, and Calvary is the estimate of His hatred.

So is the Revolution in Cuba all done! Did Manley’s  New International  Economic Order  come into being! Will Trump make America Great Again, or White again as some cynics are suggesting.  Did Adolf Hitler”s Third Reich last the expected Thousand years! Has the sun set on the British Empire!  Will Jamaica achieve ‘ Prosperity ‘, and #FourinOne! The future is uncertain for all peoples; and the past already a settled affair.
But what we, the children of God know, is that :
Because Christ lives we can face tomorrow. With certainty!
THE WORD OF GOD ….this morning.
These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.

Hebrews 11:39‭-‬40 NIV

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Hebrews 12:1‭-‬3 NIV
Unlike Cuba after Castro. Or Venezuela after Madura! Or America after #WhatagwaanJamaica…POTUS!

Or #Gaza after #Kartel!  Or Tivoli after #Dudus. Or the JCF and Jamaica after a very bloody November.
Thank God for Jesus  then,  as we ponder on the life and work of this complex historical figure. Fidel Castro!

 But ultimately ” our eyes are fixed on Jesus the author and perfecter  of our faith! For His Work of Salvation is ” Finished”. All done!

It’s a free gift from a merciful God.  All we are required to do is to accept it in faith.

It’s a good thing I waited! Otherwise I would have missed this Word which I read during my lunchtime devotions yesterday :
“All men are like grass,

and all their  glory like the flowers of the field;

the grass withers and flowers fall,

but the word of the Lord stands forever.” 1 Peter 1: 24-25.
From Monday I’ve been itching to write after I read the warnings issued by the Word of God, in the readings for the first Sunday in Advent; the beginning of the new liturgical year for my Anglican worldwide communion.

Especially the Epistle and the Gospel readings.

And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

Romans 13:11‭-‬14 NIV
THE GOSPEL….Abridged
“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,   but only the Father.  As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.  For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark;  and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man……
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.  But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into.  So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Matthew 24:36‭-‬39‭, ‬42‭-‬44 NIV
Amazingly that same morning I awoke with a ‘ song in my heart’. No, not a hymn. But a once very popular reggae song which I heard on Kool 97 FM radio station : you’re living dangerously by Barrington Levy. I try and keep in touch with popular music as there is so much to learn from it.  And enjoy too. For at one stage, like the ” Home alone Kid”, who declared famously in the movie that ‘ Television is my life’, music was my life. And if you couldn’t dance you could not  successfully try and date a nice girl.
And so Barrington Levy’s warning to his girl that ‘ she was not doing him right’, and therefore ‘ living dangerously ‘, reverberated in my mind as I read the Word of God.
That those who don’t know Christ  are ‘living dangerously’.

For the period of Advent in my Church, marks a time of preparation for the ‘ Coming of Christ ‘. And the very first Advent was a preparation for Christmas. A time which is celebrated with great fanfare and joy and spending time with family and spending money at the mall, in the Western World. An event which is rivaled only by Thanksgiving which is being celebrated today primarily in the USA.
But, but, Christ’s Second coming, to which the readings point, will be a different matter altogether. And so Jesus essentially warns his disciples, in the same way Paul warns the church in Rome that ‘ you’re living dangerously ‘.
For those who cling to the works of darkness, ‘ The reveling, the debauchery….the quarreling and jealousy ‘, are in danger of suffering the same fate as those who were ‘ swept away in the flood ‘ in Noah’s time.

And the same fate awaits ‘ those who are not ready when Jesus comes at an unexpected time’.
Therefore when we combine Peter’s solemn warning that:

All flesh  ( the NRSV) is like grass…..the grass withers….but the word of the Lord endures forever;

with Jesus’ warning, we begin to understand the real dynamics of world and local events.
So all this excitement about Donald Trump will soon be history.  It doesn’t mean that we ought  to be oblivious , and not guard against, the real and present threat, to world peace and attacks on civil liberties of minorities in the USA. But trust me, or more currently ‘ believe me’, ” bigly”,  the Advent message warns us that a greater existential challenge confronts mankind – Judgement. Which is part of what the Second Coming of Jesus will achieve. The other being ‘ to receive those who eagerly await his coming ‘, as revealed in Holy Scripture according to the writer to the Hebrews, which I was led to read yesterday.
And so Trump, so all this excitement around Hillary Clinton and her 2 million vote lead and the encouragement to ‘ challenge the Electoral College’. Get over it  Democrats and Liberals, as Advent and it’s dire warning, and yet, wonderful message  for the ‘ Hope and Fears’ for all mankind, as that classic Christmas Carol reminds us, is upon us.
So all this excitement about a ‘ spiritually exhausted’ Kane West, the famous American singer.  Or in Jamaica our latest ‘ hit song’, the tough talking Leader of the Opposition, and the 650 million public spending on ‘ bushing’ by the ruling JLP so near to the upcoming Local Government elections.
Issues worthy of serious  debate and analysis, but let us not forget, that the ultimate reality is that we are all living very dangerously. Whether President, President Elect, Prime Minister, Opposition Leader, celebrated journalist – do we remember the days when for some people a day could not pass without listening to Matty Perkins or reading Morris Cargill in The Daily Gleaner on a Sunday!
Our role then as children of God, is to first heed the message of Advent in the midst of the preparations for Christmas. To be ready for Christ’s Second Coming. Otherwise we too will be guilty of living dangerously.
And  then to warn others. Persistently! As their Salvation is at risk, and perish they will if Christ comes again and they are not ‘ ready’. Even and especially our close relatives and friends!

For life is not about ‘ success ‘ in Politics,  watching  Netflix, and owning  iPhones. Not about watching LeBron and Currie, nor celebrating with Usain Bolt and #RealShellyAnn. Not about ‘ a trailer load of girls’, nor listening to Bounty Killa and Rhianna. Not even  about celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas with family and friends and hot chocolate and Turkey and Ham.

But whether or not you are watching and waiting faithfully, spreading God’s Kingdom  of Mercy and Love, in the power of The Holy Spirit because The Crucified One Who died for us, will One sweet Day, return as King.  And Judge of all mankind.

Helpless in Jamaica, Helpless in America, Strong in The Lord

It was chilling! Just the sound of her voice,  as she recounted a night of terror, tugged at your heart.

It was radio at it’s very best, as the host of #rjr94fm’s Beyond The Headlines #djmiller, during a week when they are celebrating 20 years of production, played the tape of an interview done by #TVJ’s Kirk Wright.
The young woman shared a story of ‘ wicked gunmen’, in one of Jamaica’s inner city communities, firebombing her building where many people lived. And then turning their high powered weapons on the ‘ innocent’, as they tried to escape the heat of the fire.
Then we heard how she,  with her ‘ baby at the breast’, climbed up on the roof, followed by her child’s father with a machete in hand, and ‘ waited to die’. And how she cried to to Almighty God for mercy in her completely helpless state.
All of this caused by an ongoing feud between one community and another over ‘ who should rule ‘. A grab for power, reportedly triggered by the vacuum created by the extradition of the once all powerful ganglord, Christopher ” Dudus” Coke, which has left several persons dead, and a city terrified.
Then the same night this week, continuing to read the New York Times best selling author Rev. Timothy Keller’s new book on Prayer,  I came upon this profound Truth.
Helplessness – Prayer is Accepting Weakness and Dependence
  ( One of 12 Touchstones of Prayer….Prayer is a Duty and Discipline……Prayer is Conversing with God….Prayer Must Be ” In Jesus’ Name” According to The Gospel etc.)
Norwegian author Ole Hallesby begins his short book on Prayer by defining prayer as an attitude of mind and heart, characterized primarily as helplessness.
” As far as I can see, prayer has been ordained only for the helpless….Prayer and helplessness are inseparable. Only he who is helpless can truly pray”.
Such prayer is an outworking of gospel faith, because only the one who confesses complete  spiritual  bankruptcy can receive Christ’s salvation.
Then as I went walking yesterday morning,  after my devotions,  this profound reminder of our state of helpless came into my mind without any thought on my part. A prayer we used as the basis for petitioning our Lord,  my wife and I went on our knees later on , and  prayed for our nation and those known to us.
O Jesus:
Nothing in my hand I bring.

Simply to your Cross I cling.

Naked! Come to you for dress.

Helpless! Look to you for grace.

I to the fountain fly

Wash me Savior lest I die.
O do Lord, do Lord remember me….

I can’t even walk unless you are  holding my hand…..songs which got the crowd dancing at our annual Harvest Supper last night.
Then I recalled this medication written between 1947-49 by the late Rev. Peter Marshall  ( whose life story became a movie entitled ‘ A man called Peter), a former chaplain of the United States Senate.
Verse: Judges 7:2 ” The Lord said to Gideon, ‘ The troops with you are too many for me to give the Medianites into your their hands. Israel would only take credit way from me saying ‘ My own hand has delivered me”.
The context then  was World War Two.  The context now is ISIS and International Terrorism.   Perhaps also even President elect Trump and his chief strategist, the reportedly white nationalist Steve  Bannon ’embodying more than anyone the liberals’ awful existential pain and fury: ‘…according to THR Michael Wolfe.

Abridged Version
We know, our Father, that at this desperate hour in world affairs, we need thee. We need thy strength, thy guidance, thy wisdom.
May thy wisdom and thy power come upon the President of these United States, the Senators and Congress men  (and women), to whom have been entrusted leadership.

May the responsibility lie heavily on their hearts, until they are ready to acknowledge their helplessness and turn to thee.

Give them the honesty, the courage, and the moral integrity to confess that they don’t know what to do.

Only then can they lead us as a nation beyond human wisdom to thee, who alone has the answer……..
O God, may we never recover from our feeling of helplessness and our need of thee!.

In the strong name of Jesus, our Lord, we pray. Amen.

It is my prayer, that out of this experience with inner city life and helplessnes, and which cry for help to an Almighty God, is but a metaphor for the helplessness of a world caught up in Sin, and the help for which,  ‘ cometh only from the Lord, may touch hearts across the nation and the world.
The hearts of journalists, of Political Leaders – who are often too confident that they know all the answers, of Teachers – battling with the twin trials of violence in schools and apathy towards learning by many students.
The hearts of those protesting against a Trump victory, and those relieved by Clinton’s loss.
But more importantly,  the hearts of our Religious Leaders, for if the people of God are not taught this basic truth, of our helpless before an Almighty God, we may either forget to pray, or pray without being desperate. Both of which tragedies  may account for the growth of evil in our nations, in the USA and Jamaica,  despite the presence of so many churches.
For who knows what further mischief await these United States of America and Jamaica.

May God have mercy on our desperate souls in and through the Crucified One……Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to your Cross I cling. ( Even spell check has it right).

Forgiving Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and others: A Christian Perspective

I forgive you Donald Trump for your  racist remarks when a black man, opposed to your candidacy, was hounded out of one of your rallies.  For your belittling a physically challenged journalist for being  critical of your policies. For your outrageous comments about your sense of entitlement to grope women because of your celebrity status. For disrespecting the person and  Presidency of the first  African American man, Barack Obama, to be voted into that high office. I forgive you.
Is that enough? No, but it a start, as we need not only to get him out our heads, but out of  our hearts as well.
I forgive you Hillary Clinton for supporting abortion on demand; whether early or late term abortions. For your open defiance of God’s natural order, ‘ that a man shall leave his mother and father and become joined together with his wife in holy matrimony  as one flesh’. For supporting  same sex marriage. And for being part of a state sponsored movement which is attacking the religious liberties of Christians who oppose Gay marriage.
Is that enough? No, but it’s a start with the ultimate goal being able to release her from our hearts.
I forgive you Michael Manley and Edward George Seaga, and others, whose struggle for political power in 1980, scorched the Jamaican earth, literally and metaphorically. Leaving in it’s wake a virtual civil war with over 800 people dead ( 152 in 1970),  thousands fleeing to Miami, and the establishment of garrison constituencies and a gun culture, all of which continue to ‘ haunt ‘ our nation, and  stymie the development of our country until this very day. Yet I forgive you both; one dead but the other very much alive. From my heart.
On the behalf of so many wives and daughters and even sons, I forgive the many men, who after years of struggle with a faithful wife, suddenly leaves for ‘ greener pastures’. Often never to be seen and heard from again ( which is bad  but ‘ in your face ‘ is worse)  unless of course he becomes ‘pop down’ and looking for comfort. Leaving the wife, or baby mother to fend for the children and put them through school while maintaining her sanity only by the grace of God. I forgive you on their behalf. And many forgive much more sacrificially than I can. Deep in their hearts.
In the same way that I ask forgiveness for my own many, many sins which grieve the heart of God each day!
So where is all of this coming from.

Two passages from the Bible reading  for Sunday coming in my Church.  And a discussion at Bible study last night.
First The Gospel Reading
Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
……..And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.  One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Arenʼt you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”  But the other criminal rebuked him. “Donʼt you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”  Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. ”  Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Luke 23:32‭-‬34‭, ‬39‭-‬43 NIV
One of the least obeyed, no doubt because it is so difficult,  of all the commands of God, and express will of our Savior Jesus,  is to forgive those who trespass against us. And further, to forgive those who persecute us and cause us all kinds of trouble.
And the phenomenon of Donald Trump, has already began, and without a doubt, will continue challenge our commitment to this ‘ high office ‘, to which God in Christ has called us. To forgive our enemies!
Why is this so important?  Because to forgive sinners, and to save ‘ a wretch like me, and you’, Redemption, is the main reason why Jesus was sent by His Father to be Crucified on an ‘ old wooden Cross ‘.
And so God calls his children who are washed in the Blood of the Lamb, to forgive and to show love to the ‘ vilest offender’; with the hope that the Holy Spirit may be able to touch his or her soul, and rescue them from the kingdom of darkness until the kingdom of his glorious Son.
This is the context in which we must place the Thief on the Cross who gained the promise of Eternal Life at the last minute. That it is never too late for the wicked to know this mysterious and compassionate God, so full of mercy and love. And so, The Thief, so Donald Trump, so other  politicians and strategists  like the legendary Karl Rove during the Bush administration and our own ‘scorched earth’ politicians.
So our female DJ star Spice, and the male equivalent Vybes  Kartel.

So ‘ bad girl ‘ Beyonce and others.

So our atheist friends, some of whom delight in questioning the very presence of God, much less His Sovereign rule over all the earth.
 All in need of our forgiveness and prayers. So that they may repent and turn to the Living God.
I’ll leave the OT reading from Jeremiah about Prophets and Priests who presumed to advise and teach God’s people without  first ‘ standing on the Council of God for another time. The upshot of which is that God accused them of ‘ leading his Sheep astray’. A serious challenge for the Church is this dispensation. And who knows might have contributed to the emergence of the Trump phenomenon.
And close with the conclusion of the petition of Our Lord’s Prayer which invites us to pray for forgiveness as we forgive those who trespass against us. A Word which was explained with great urgency and fervor by an Evangelical Pastor visiting from the USA  at our Bible study last night.

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Matthew 6:14‭-‬15 NIV
It’s as simple but yet as profound as that. So if the Church, the body of Christ, really wishes to witness a renewal in our land, to see a reduction in murder and immorality  and injustice in our land, we will have to be in the centre of  a movement to forgive those have wronged us. For as a  theologian I read recently,  noted,
 ” unresolved bitterness  is a sign that we are not right with God”.
Of course that is not the entire answer. But it all begins there. As it began on Calvary! For if we forgive we will open our hearts to love and to seek justice and to do mercy.

In Tivoli, in Flanker, in LA, in Chicago and in Paris.

And God Himself will then pour out His mighty power through us like streams  of living water. That is how this land, and America, and Le Pen’s  France will be healed.
For the battle is His and not ours. And the weapons of war that we use are not the weapons of the world. Not weapons of mass destruction. But rather weapons which have divine power to destroy strongholds within our hearts and the hearts of those who hate us and persecute us.

And so we  take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ Jesus. And truly forgive Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Michael Manley and Edward Seaga.  Regardless of whether they are even aware of our  change of heart  ( metanoia), in and through Christ Jesus. For the conclusion of the matter  is God’s business.
So if you really wish to sing a song I’ve been singing today  with authenticity:
Are you washed, are you washed, are you washed  with the Blood of the Lamb?

Are your garments spotless are they white as snow, are you washed in the Blood of the Lamb.
Then begin to forgive. Even the vilest offender from your heart and see how the God of mercy and love will use each one of us for His own glory in very wonderful ways.

We had planned to stay up to celebrate with #HillaryClinton. But when things began to go ‘ south’, my wife and I went to bed early.
However, all through the night, Paul’s revelation in 2. Cor. 10, that:
” Though we wage war, our weapons are not of this world……They have divine power to destroy strongholds “, came into my mind as a prayer.
Then this morning we awoke to hear the news that #DonaldTrump had not only won, but won handily.
This is how my soul reacted, as God’s Word and an inspired word came into my heart to comfort and instruct me.
” Seek the Lord while he may be found;

Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts.

Let  us  turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him,

and to our God and he will freely pardon.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

neither are your ways my ways….declares the Lord.
As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:6-9
Clearly the Sovereign God, who rules over heaven and earth,  has a plan,  which at this time, we cannot understand, but I am sure will be revealed in due course.
For although many Christians had serious issues with some of the Obama/Clinton policies…..same sex marriage….abortions on demand….and the growing reports of state promoted attacks of religious liberties, the buffonery, bigotry, and plain nastiness of Trump did not allow well thinking people to support him.
Perhaps the hope was that a President Clinton could be convinced that extremism of any sort was not a sustainable option.

Maybe we were naive, but still I could not bring myself to support Trump.
Praise the Lord , my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.  Praise the Lord , my soul, and forget not all his benefits—  who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,  who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,  who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagleʼs.  The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed.  He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel:  The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.  He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever;  he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.  For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him;  as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.  As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;  for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.  The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field;  the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.  But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord ʼs love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their childrenʼs children—  with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.

Psalm 103:1‭-‬18 NIV
As even though many of us are disappointed, we still praise the Lord for He is indeed a good God, with a track record of mercy and grace. And our eyes are not fixed on any political leader, who is today, but gone tomorrow. While our Lord’s compassion is from ‘ Everlasting to Everlasting ‘.

Which brought me to the third and final comfort for my soul; my favourite hymn and anthem.

For to Christ and Christ alone we look for Salvation and not to any leader. In Politics,  Sports, Entertainment or Business.
Edward Mote, 1797-1874
1. My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand.
2. When darkness veils His lovely face,

I rest on His unchanging grace;

In every high and stormy gale

My anchor holds within the veil.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand.
3. His oath, His covenant, and blood

Support me in the whelming flood;

When every earthly prop gives way,

He then is all my Hope and Stay.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand.
4. When He shall come with trumpet sound,

Oh, may I then in Him be found,

Clothed in His righteousness alone,

Faultless to stand before the throne!
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand.

The Foundations of Sustainable  Values and Attitudes in any Country

Praying that America will be spared from evil next Tuesday.

Going to a funeral this morning; a friend was killed four months ago and then his wife died suddenly a couple weeks ago.

 Reflecting on the sudden death of a teacher yesterday in the town where I work; and how much young #NicholasFrancis’ death and the X6MurderTrial continue to cause so much pain in my country.

And preaching tomorrow on ” One generation shall commend thy works to another.”. Psalm 145.6.
Then ‘ happened upon’ this wonderful teaching hymn, while searching for another. Words which echo across history, and which commend the ultimate ‘ mighty work ‘ that our God has done for us, to this present confused and disobedient generation.
And which Salvation story, needs to be the foundation, and if not it shall always be a ‘ stumbling block ‘, of any plan to change the Values  and Attitudes of both the Jamaican and American people.
For because Christ died for us, and with mighty power, was raised from the dead, so that our sins are Atoned for, and we, who believe,  are assured of Eternal  Life, even in the face of evil and death, we can rejoice.
And have a grounded ( in the power of The Almighty God)  Hope, that after the ‘ midnight of confusion ‘, will arise one day, a ‘ morning of rejoicing ‘. One fine and glorious day! In America and in Jamaica!.
Which is why this post on Facebook just now happened.

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder…….
When I think that God, his Son not sparing,
sent him to die – I scarce can take it in:

that on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,

he bled and died to take away my sin.

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to thee,

how great thou art! How great thou art…
Words to lift our weary souls  on a Saturday morning. For we who love Christ can rejoice whether #DonaldTrump or #HillaryClinton  or whether #NicholasFrancis or #X6murdertrial .
The Hymn

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder

Consider all the *worlds thy hands have made,

I see the stars, I hear the *rolling thunder,

Thy power throughout the universe displayed:
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:

How great thou art! How great thou art!

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:

How great thou art! How great thou art!
When through the woods and forest glades I wander

And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,

When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,

And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:
And when I think that God, his Son not sparing,

Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,

That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,

He bled and died to take away my sin.
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation

And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!

Then *I shall bow in humble adoration,

And there proclaim, My God, how great thou art.
