I watched The Final Year last night on Netflix. A HBO special about President Obama final year with a particular focus on Foreign Policy. Towards the end, perhaps after having reflected on, “ wars and rumors of wars”, that he had encountered, or prevented, he shared this view of history. And I am paraphrasing : That history is not a straight line. Rather that it zigs and zags. But in the end it trends towards a better world. Where men and women of goodwill come together to shape a better world than they found it.
Perhaps he was mindful of the long shadow of darkness, the shaping of things to come, which the campaign, now coming to an end, of one Donald J ( for genius) Trump, was announcing to the world. Perhaps he was being prescient, and mindful of the need, which the theme of The 2021 National Prayer Breakfast announced eight years later, “ Keeping Hope Alive”. Who knows!
What I do know if that the tweet which I posted recently, in response to one from Imani Duncan Pryce :
24 murders in ONE weekend… 4 of them happened in Allman Town #CentralKingston Violence spiraling out of control! And its not just now, it’s been on the rise in hot spot areas for months! On #MLKDay let’s not be silent – this issue ultimately affects all of us in Jamaica 🇯🇲 1/3
https://twitter.com/imani_dp/status/1351309407221645312?s=21
in the light of recent events, portrays a reality which is not in sync with Obama’s world view:
24 murders in a weekend is past madness. The PM @AndrewHolnessJM is so right. #Changeofheartneeded But how do you achieve that when you (attempt to ) separate Church from State @dondee_don @TyroneReidNNN @cliffnationwide @Zemi66 Did I hear @JoeBiden say #InGodwetrust @djmillerJA
A tweet which reflects the pain, and agony, and angst, of a nation which has experienced the reality of over 1000 of its citizens being murdered year after year after year. For many years! Non stop. So quo vadis, from whence cometh, in our situation, any argument of optimism of a better future. Of keeping hope alive! The most I can say, is that such a hope will not be, and can never be, found in any attempt, legally or philosophically, to separate Church from State. A discussion which has been triggered, if not unleashed, by the national debate on whether or not the Abortion Law, as it currently stands, ought to be amended to reflect the current public heath and human rights realities of our time.
A couple of things recommend themselves for careful scrutiny as we proceed. In the so called most advanced democracy in the world, perhaps a title now under threat by the followers of Donald J ( for genius) Trump, Joe Biden went to church before going to his inauguration. And when he got there, the President Elect, was required to swear on oath, on a Bible, the Word of God, his commitment to uphold the constitution of the USA, before he was declared President. So where was there any separation of Church from State? Perhaps the real narrative which nobody wishes to float publicly, although many may hold the view privately, is the desire to separate God from the State. Completely! And if we follow this train of thought it is a already a reality – and in some cases there may be merit in that position – that the ultimate goal, or view, is to delink the church from God. That one can be spiritual and worship God without going to church. That a nation can have a moral compass, and achieve peace and social justice without any reference to God. Or the church! Even that one can love and appreciate the life and teachings of Jesus but reject the God of the Old Testament.
I get it that the Church’s view ought not to be, and cannot be, the last word on how a nation makes decisions for all it’s citizens – in Jamaica in recent times up to 20-30% don’t claim to be Christians – in a modern and plural democracy. Yes we accept that reality. But how then do you govern a people , whose very existence as a independent nation of mostly formerly enslaved people, was so heavily influenced by the church, motivated and inspired and instructed by the Word of the Almighty God, without reference to this same God. Both pre and post emancipation! And both pre and post Independence. That kind of mindset can only come from those who would wish to separate the Church from God. And to be fair, some churches by their irreverent behavior, and by their inattention to cries for Justice and by their alignment with forces of evil – whether political or philosophical – have “ lost their first love”. Even Jesus Christ and Him Crucified, Risen, Ascended and soon coming again!
Which in summary is the dilemma that confronts Andrew. And before him second Peter! How do you solve Jamaica’s hope-sapping, heart-rending, belly-bottom pain inducing murder rate, when you know that at the root of the problem is that “ man’s heart is desperately wicked”. And has been so since Cain murdered his brother Abel, and then posed the all time infamous and very instructive question of the ages: “ Am I my brothers keeper”?
Investment In “Heart-Ware” of Jamaicans Next Phase of Crime-Fighting – PM
How then do you insert into a society which according to the late Ian Boyne – miss his informed and cogently argued and fearless column so much on a Sunday, although not on religious hard talk which I repeatedly told him was just pure hype and a waste of time – has atomized, and broken down into individuals in pursuit of satisfying self and oblivious of any other, the need to be their “ brother’s keeper”. A cry from the heart by a former Professor of Anthropology, and Grace Kennedy Lecturer, Don Robotham, now living in the USA and who posted this challenging and intriguing post yesterday on Twitter:
It will be interesting to see if Biden’s presidency has any effect on the current individualistic ethic of self, self, self. Will ‘self-care’ continue to rule or will a more social ethic emerge? Doubtful about the latter
My #churchsista Hotline Talk Show Host Emily Shields ought to bear in mind these thoughts as she, yesterday, delivered of herself a powerful cry for a change of heart of wicked men who without any conscience or heart murdered, and conspired to murder, a young woman in Jamaica recently. The PM has come under fire, as expected, from elements in the media, “ Bankrupt of ideas how to fight crime”, for daring to call for divine intervention. As did former Minister of National Security Peter Bunting; although his evangelical fervor has, as least in public, long died. The church will continue to come under fire, from within as expected, and from without, for daring to recommend what God has called it to do, “ rescue yourselves from this corrupt generation “. To an increasing secular society even when it is floundering and unable to manage the challenges of its time – corruption in high places, a gaping gap between the rich and the poor, injustice for the marginalized and a loss of a moral compass or reference point. But what it cannot do is to resile from it’s old ordained role as “ salt and light” in any society. For the reality is that despite Obama’s optimism and the sanke that declares that “ tings already better”, the trajectory of this world, according to the Word of God, is heading south and not north. To destruction. Even when advances in science and technology conspire to sugar coat that awesome reality.
And the greatest and really only evidence you need is the reality of what happened on the Cross of Calvary. So that this world will not perish! So those who save themselves from this corrupt generation in Christ will not perish. Not so those who don’t. In that context then, it would be smart for the society to align its future with the Word of God, and not try to separate that which God has joined together: Fallen mankind and Himself in Jesus Christ. But as we all know, Barrabbas was chosen over Jesus! The Popular over Truth!
As I thought about those things I wrote to my church accordingly :
FIRST EMAIL
I had no intention of writing this morning. Further, I had no inclination that I would be led to write on the Abortion Dilemma, as shared by the late Theologian and Pastor, John Stott in his seminal book: Decisive Issues Facing Christians Today ( first published in 1990). A book recommended to me many years ago, by the late Bishop Herman Spence of blessed memory.
I woke up, a bit earlier than usual, at 5:30 am, and then got up. And into my mind came “ Order My Steps in Your Word”, by The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir”.
So dutifully I opened my iPad and played it on the YouTube app. I can’t tell you what part of the song caused the Abortion issue to emerge in my thoughts, but suddenly it came up; and so did the memory of what John Stott had written. And which treatment of the issue, by one of my favorite theologians, I had not read for many years.
So here is how Stott began the chapter on The Abortion Dilemma ( Other issues treated separately by Stott, and which are related to the abortion issue includes; Pluralism: Should we impose our views; Involvement: is it our concern; Human Rights; Women, Men, and God; Homosexual Partnerships; A Call for Christian Leadership ( which appropriately provides a bookend to a remarkable book)
THE ABORTION DILEMMA
The debate over abortion is admittedly complex. It has medical, legal, theological, ethical, social, and personal aspects. It is also a highly emotional subject, for it touches on the mysteries of human sexuality and reproduction, and often involves acutely painful dilemmas.
Yet Christians cannot opt out of personal decision-making or public discussion regarding this topic merely because of its complexity. Indeed two factors should bring it to the top of our agenda.
First, what is involved in the abortion issue is nothing less than our Christian doctrines of both God and humanity, or more precisely, the sovereignty of God and the sanctity of human life. All Christian people believe that Almighty God is the only giver, sustainer and taker-way of life.
On the one hand “ he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else”, and “ in him we live and move and have our being”.
On the other, as the psalmist says to God, “ when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust”. Indeed, whenever anyone dies, Christian faith struggles to affirm with Job: “ The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.”
To the Christian then, both the life-giving and the life-taking are divine prerogatives. And although we cannot interpret “ you shall not kill”, as an absolute prohibition, since the same law which forbade killing also sanctioned it in some situations ( e.g. capital punishment and holy war), yet the taking of a human life is the height of arrogance. Hence Mother Teresa’s strong feeling about the evil of abortion:
…only God can decide life and death…..That is why abortion is such a terrible sin. You are not only killing life, but putting self before God; yet people decide who has to live and who has to die. They want to make themselves Almighty God. They want to take the power of God in their hands. They want to say “ I can do without God. I can decide.”
That is the most devilish thing that a human being can do……
The question of abortion concerns our doctrine of humanity as well as our doctrine of God, For, however undeveloped the embryo may still be, everyone agrees that it is living and that the life it possesses is human. So in whatever way we decide to formulate the relationship between newborn and unborn children, our evaluation of human life is inevitably involved. Further, the present practice of almost indiscriminate abortion reflect a ejection of the Biblical view of human dignity……..
So then, if both divine sovereignty and human dignity are being challenged by the abortion debate, no conscientious Christian can stand aside from it……
Finally a challenging comment by Stott. Not his final word, but my final extract from this chapter. For now!
“ It would not be honest to claim that all Christians see eye to eye on this issue, even all Christians who seek to submit to the authority of Scripture…… “
There is a lot more than Stott has to offer but that will come in due course when so led.
Peace and in obedience.

SECOND EMAIL
This is how the message developed this morning. From last night:
Isaiah 50:10-11
New International Version
10
Who among you fears the Lord
and obeys the word of his servant?
Let the one who walks in the dark,
who has no light,
trust in the name of the Lord
and rely on their God.
11
But now, all you who light fires
and provide yourselves with flaming torches,
go, walk in the light of your fires
and of the torches you have set ablaze.
This is what you shall receive from my hand:
You will lie down in torment.
A Word that was found in a side-bar in Oswald Chambers’ devotional reading for January 19th:
JANUARY 19
Vision and Darkness
When the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him.
Whenever God gives a vision to a Christian, it is as if He puts him in “the shadow of His hand” (Isaiah 49:2). The saint’s duty is to be still and listen.
There is a “darkness” that comes from too much light— that is the time to listen. The story of Abram and Hagar in Genesis 16 is an excellent example of listening to so-called good advice during a time of darkness, rather than waiting for God to send the light.
When God gives you a vision and darkness follows, wait. God will bring the vision He has given you to reality in your life if you will wait on His timing. Never try to help God fulfill His word. Abram went through thirteen years of silence, but in those years all of his self-sufficiency was destroyed. He grew past the point of relying on his own common sense. Those years of silence were a time of discipline, not a period of God’s displeasure. There is never any need to pretend that your life is filled with joy and confidence; just wait upon God and be grounded in Him (see Isaiah 50:10-11).
Then in my sleep last night, and early this morning was a “song in the night”: I delivered you when bound…..from :
1 Hark, my soul, it is the Lord;
’tis thy Saviour, hear his word;
Jesus speaks, and speaks to thee,
‘Say, poor sinner, lov’st thou me?
2 ‘I delivered thee when bound,
and, when wounded, healed thy wound;
sought thee wandering, set thee right,
turned thy darkness into light.
3 ‘Can a woman’s tender care
cease towards the child she bare?
Yes, she may forgetful be,
yet will I remember thee.
4 ‘Mine is an unchanging love,
higher than the heights above,
deeper than the depths beneath,
free and faithful, strong as death.
5 ‘Thou shalt see my glory soon,
when the work of grace is done;
partner of my throne shalt be:
say, poor sinner, lov’st thou me?
‘6 Lord, it is my chief complaint
that my love is weak and faint;
yet I love thee, and adore;
O for grace to love thee more!
Verse 2 stayed with me and comforted me, in one of the darkest moments of my life, many years ago. And sustained me! It comes to mind regularly. Even now. Verse 6 is a favorite of a dear Christian friend. And church sister! Verse 3 stayed with me for a while, as the Abortion Dilemma came to mind. But not for long!
But the meditation led to Peter’s re-establishment by Jesus:
“When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.”
John 21:15-17 NIV
But before this passage another one, caught my attention. Briefly!
“Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus ), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.”
John 21:1-3 NIV
And then:
“Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered. He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.”
John 21:4-6 NIV
Finally, as I continued to read and reflect on the words from Isaiah, I was led to post three messages on Facebook :
How beautiful on the mountain are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, your God reigns! Isaiah 52:7. #BetterthanBidenandKamala
The Sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my heart to listen like one being taught. The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears…Isaiah 50:4 #Vaccine
Come all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money,come, buy and eat! Come, and buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labour on what does not satisfy?
What does all of this mean! Perhaps different things to different people. As always with God’s Word each one of us is being called to sing a part of the hymn; be a part of the choir. But singing from the same hymn sheet – bringing good news that Jesus saves. For me two things. First! Trust God no matter how dark the situations appears to be. Take the precious Name of Jesus with you. Always! Call on Him often. Depend on Him. Build a solid relationship with Him. So that you may catch fish. Plenty fish, where He sends you. To feed His sheep. Not your sheep! A bit of advice I would share with Biden and Kamala if I were asked #BigPlansBigProblems #GleanerHeadline.
Second! Be very careful that you don’t fall asleep unprotected at nights. For that’s when you are most vulnerable to the devil’s attacks. Take the Name of Jesus with you as you go to sleep. Pray for mercy and protection. Better than King Alarm! Much better. And the Lord will protect you from evil. And He wake will you up, with or without a “ heavy hand”, eager and ready to serve Him. And to feed His sheep and not just your own interests.
And fit to tackle weighty matters like Church and State; for if there is true separation what happens to the governed. Who feeds the sheep? The State! And simple matters like where to find an envelop – with important contents – after you have searched the whole house for it. And then you call upon the Name of Jesus. And presto it is found. Just where the Lord tells you to look!
Perhaps we ought to call upon the Name of Jesus more and more and God will grant us the wisdom to understand what does it mean to advocate for separation of Church and State. If that is what He meant by “ Give to Caesar what belongs to Andrew, and give to God what belongs Jesus”. A fair translation I think. But seriously…. if all things come from God, and of His own we give back to Him, what portion do we reserve for the State. Certainly not obedience. Cant be sovereign power either….you would have no power unless my Father gave it to you…remember that exchange with Pilate
Eternal Father bless our land…hmmmm!…Guide us with thy mighty hand…hmmmm! America the land of the free and the home of the brave has got is wrong. Badly wrong, as recent events has demonstrated. For as a wise man once said: “ You can’t have Christian values without Christianity”. I hope we don’t also. But this one can only come out with fasting and prayers, comes to mind. It is a complex issue. Which is what happens essentially when you take the precious Name of Jesus with you. Night and day! Precious Name O how sweet. Hope of earth and joy of heaven.
Very controversial subject but one that we as church need to ponder on and pray about without ceasing, lest we give our allegiance to another god. A very real and present danger in a democratic state. And far worse in an oppressive state, where people like Trump would lead America given half a chance!
So come buy wine and milk without money and without cost.
Peace and in obedience
