I read my newspapers to see what men are doing; and read my Bible to see what men ought to do – A saint of yore.
MY NEWSPAPERS
This week the news about what men and women are doing, was tumultuous and heartbreaking. First, Jamaicans awoke one morning this week, to hear news that, even in a country where murder is commonplace, shocked them. “ Dem kill mi one daughter and mi four grand pickney.! Why?”
A question which only God in his mercy can answer. For as we have been saying for some time in our beloved country, “this no normal”. All kinds of speculation as to why abounds. This as the police apprehended the prime suspect the very next day. A fact that will bring some comfort to the relatives. But nothing that is lasting!
THE STAR
Gwendolyn McKnight howled uncontrollably for hours while she sat on a stool watching police detectives extract the lifeless bodies of her daughter Kemisha Wright and four grandchildren who were murdered early Tuesday, allegedly by a male relative at their home in New Road, Clarendon, on Tuesday.
All the victims’ throats were slashed. Rushane Barnett, 23, who police named as a person of interest, was held in Wilson Run in Trelawny last night by the police.
“Dem kill mi one daughter and mi four grand pickney! Why? Why they do that to my little daughter? Why they do that? She was so loving and kind,” McKnight wailed. The distraught mom told THE STAR that she was particularly heartbroken by the manner in which her family was killed.
If five dead at one time, and four of them children, was heartbreaking, the next news coming this time from the USA, was for some earth shattering and unacceptable. While for others, welcome news that was long over due. Perspectives that highlight a hot button issue, Abortion, which has split America right down the middle into Pro Life Camps and Pro Choice Camps. And is one of the defining issues of “ how America turns” in the 21st Century
BBC NEWS
Roe v Wade: Abortion clinics start to close after Supreme Court ruling
Clinics have begun closing in some US states after a Supreme Court ruling on Friday removed American women’s constitutional right to abortion.
About half of states are expected to introduce new restrictions or bans after the court reversed its 50-year-old Roe v Wade decision.
And 13 states have so-called trigger laws in place that will see abortion banned within 30 days.
President Joe Biden described the ruling as “a tragic error”.
In Phoenix, Arizona, police fired tear gas after pro-choice protesters banged on the doors and windows of the state capitol. In Los Angeles, protesters briefly blocked traffic on a highway.
Finally, not a matter which was either heartbreaking or earth shattering, but one which woke up the usual “sleepy ho hum” Commonwealth Heads Of Government Meeting -the race for the post of Commonwealth Secretary General. One that had stimulated much interest in Jamaica and in the Caribbean, and was therefore a matter for some of national pride, but for others a big mistake, the race between two Caribbean women, the incumbent Baroness Scotland and our own Foreign Minister Kamika Johnson-Smith. And after a spirited race by Johnson-Smith, which at one time seemed to have been “ in the bag for her”, Baroness Scotland prevailed by a wafer thin margin.
THE DAILY GLEANER
Jamaica’s Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith has lost in her bid to oust Baroness Patricia Scotland as Commonwealth secretary general. She narrowly missed out on the top post in 27-24 vote in Rwanda. #GLNRToday

THE BIBLE
The Word of God that came to me this week, explains a lot of what took place and of course offers the ultimate solution to mankind’s problems. Not only for Jamaica and for the USA and the Commonwealth, but for the whole world.
MONDAY – WHERE IS THE ELIJAH OF THIS AGE- THE CHURCH
I had not even started my devotions – there is clearly a lesson there. In fact I was on my way to do a very mundane thing. Water my wife’s two big plants in the front of the house, when this Word came. Truth is though, I was thinking about the message last night. About divided loyalty to God. A spiritually fatal thing to do!
So the Lord spoke this additional Word:
THE WORD OF GOD
““Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”
Malachi 3:8-10 NIV
I suppose like others parts of Holy Scriptures, one may discern another message, depending on context and God’s will. But this morning, for me, in the context of the Word from last night, and how it came, this matter of undivided commitment to the Lord God of Hosts, is the central message here. And further, that the promise of “ so much blessings that there will not be room to store it”, ought not necessarily to be received in terms of material blessings. No! For as another important Word, in fact the “key” to understanding the Bible, reveals:
“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.”
2 Corinthians 1:20 NIV
Then I read the Old Testament reading – I was determined to share with great excitement the message above before reading the Word below. But then the message would have been incomplete – and everything came together.
This as the Word from Elisha and Elijah takes us fast forward to Jesus about to Ascend to His Father, and “your Father”. A parting of ways, physically, but thank God not spiritually, which would result in the promised Holy Spirit dwelling within those who loved Jesus and “ wherever you go I will go” – not just Ruth and Naomi but the whole Bible – was deep in their hearts. No divided loyalty! And so with the promise fulfilled – not of a double portion of the spirit which attended Elijah, but the very presence of Jesus himself – the disciples could “ strike the water”, say to the crippled beggar, “ In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up”. Mercy!
The church of this age lacks the power of Elijah, “ tell him to send the man to me, so that they may know that there is a prophet in Israel “, is impoverished because the Power of the Holy Spirit is not with us mighty to save, because too many have divided loyalties. Even in some cases to good things! But the good ought never to become an enemy of the best. “ You have forgotten your first love “ ought to piece our hearts in the same way Peter was distraught as the Lord’s repeated questioning of his love for Jesus. For some of us in the church, Jeremiah’s accusation that “ you don’t even know how to blush” awaits. While for others the undivided loyalty is not as sharp, but it is discerned, a good thing, which evokes Paul’s famous words. “ What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God – through Jesus Christ our Lord”. Romans 7:24 -25. I once read a meditation that all preaching ought to have as its goal, that men and women ought to be brought to this point in their lives. Conviction of Sin. As only then will they cry out to God, in repentance and be saved. And I suppose if we agree then that recommendation would apply to the ministry to the unsaved. The obvious question which then arises, is what does “ salvation mean”. Many answers may come to mind. But the most important thing is that people who have been rescued from Sin and death unto everlasting life, by the shed blood of Jesus, are called to “ Love the Lord your God with all your heart……and love your neighbor as your self”. Otherwise, there will no outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Church. No parting of the waters when struck! No No healing of the crippled. No setting free of the captives. No preaching of Good News to poor. Only keeping church in a land where people are in “ Living Hell”.
Old Testament
2 Kings 2:1-2, 6-14
When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.
Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground.
When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you.” Elisha said, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.” He responded, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not.” As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha kept watching and crying out, “Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.
He picked up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. He took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, saying, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” When he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over.
Peace.
In obedience.

Lord Jesus Christ Son of The Living God we pray that as we are determined in our hearts never to leave you nor forsake you, as in our spirit we long for you and not for the blessings your pour out, your Holy Spirit may renew the church, so that a renewed church may renew this country where so many people cry out to Father God, but have no intention nor desire to follow you. A people who “ waver between two opinions”! And so the land mourns as there is no faithfulness, only lying and cursing and stealing. Up to 5 million dollars a day in the bus park in Spanish Town. And Father God only you know how much more stealing is done where no one is looking. But you see and know O God! Mercy.
TUESDAY – THE GOD WHO TURNS BLACKNESS INTO DAWN
“The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed. The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears; I have not been rebellious, I have not turned away.”
Isaiah 50:4-5 NIV
The brutal murder of the mother and her four children has left me more numb than angry or amazed or in despair. I work in the Clarendon area where the gruesome killing tool place and so many people spoke with me about it from the deaths of their souls. Incompressible, is the general mood. And mine too. Lunchtime devotions , reading the areas highlighted in my Bible, took me in the direction of the quote from Isaiah above. But what Word from the Lord in this desperate times.
Back to Martin Luther King jnr, no doubt very appropriate after the Juneteenth Public Holiday in the USA. And this reflection:
HE WHO TURS BLACKNESS INTO DAWN
Midnight is a confusing hour when it is difficult to be faithful. The most important word that the church may speak is that no midnight long remains…….Our eternal message of hope is that the dawn will come>>…
Comment: But how do you tell that to the relatives who will never see those five murdered relatives again. Never! How?
……….Faith in the dawn arises from the faith that God is good and just. When one believes this, he knows that the contradictions of life are neither final nor ultimate. He can walk through the dark night and what radiant conviction that all things work together for those that lives God. Even the most starless midnight may herald the dawn of some great fulfillment.
Comment: The message above is certainly not one that one ought to share with grieving relatives, as they pour out their souls crying and weeping and groaning and grieving. The most one can do is just to be there with them, and say nothing.
But for us who God has called in this dreadful hour to guide the nation in our collective and yet individual ways, this word from one who suffered much, MLK jnr, is sent to provide the weary, ( weary of crime and violence in our country, weary of weeping and comforting, wearing of just hearing bad news) with some comfort.
That this crime wave will not last forever. That this kind of incomprehensible and egregious act of wickedness will not go on forever. Why?
Another reflection by MLK jnr provides and answer :
………..Pharaoh stubbornly refused to respond to the cry of Moses, even when plague after plague threatened his domain. This tells us something about that we must never forget, namely that evil is recalcitrant and determined, and never voluntarily relinquishes its hold short of a persistent , almost fanatical resistance. But there is a checkpoint in the universe: evil cannot permanently organize itself. So after a long and trying struggle, with the providence off God, the Israelites crossed the Red Sea.
Final Comment: God in Christ Jesus as we all know is that checkpoint in History. And more specifically Christ and Him Crucified! Not a comforting Word to grieving relatives tonight. Folks who just need someone to hold their hands and hug and cry with them. But for us seeking a Word from God, in these challenging times for our souls, this is one. And no doubt others with share their story during the days and weeks and months ahead. So that we all can be encouraged and reassured, that the God who we serve, is a God who is good and just. And faithful! Even in the darkness of the night.
Peace and in obedience.

Lord, even, and especially in the dark hour that has descended on our country, we pray thee to renew the church with the certain hope, that You are Sovereign and faithful and good and just; Lord renew the church that our hope may be steadfast, and that we may help to renew this country where hope in the dawn is under serious threat. Mercy Lord. Mercy!
THURSDAY – AN APOSTATE CHURCH CANNOT WAGE WAR AGAINST EVIL
Early this morning, minutes to 4, the Lord woke me up to read Paul’s first letter to the church in Corinth. And this Word greeted me at the start. This as we look to God, who only can can help a nation where the blood of the slain cry out for Justice. Where is your brother Cain? I am not the keeper of my brothers as they are wicked gunmen and scammers, people who “ chop chop and whop whop”. Where is your sister and her four children Cain? I am not really taking liberty with Holy Scripture, just writing what came to my mind as the message developed.
So back to the Church in Corinth and by extension the Church in Jamaica.
This is what greeted me. Egregious Sin!
“It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this? For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has been doing this.”
1 Corinthians 5:1-3 NIV
And Paul’s letter continued in this vein :
“Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”
1 Corinthians 5:6-8 NIV
And this:
“I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.”
1 Corinthians 5:9-11 NIV
And this section on sexual, and others too, but primarily sexual, sins ends with this word:
“What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.””
1 Corinthians 5:12-13 NIV
There is a lot to say here. But I’ll say just this. There was something rotten in the state of Denmark according to Shakespeare, and a very similar charge is being leveled against the church in this age. For a Church where unrepentant sexual sins are present at all levels, and, worse, “we are proud of it”, cannot wage war against the evil of “ A Mother and Four Children Murdered. One time! This matter of judging what is happening outside the church and leaving Sin to fester in the church is an egregious evil. I’ll leave it there.
Now to part Two. Part One being this matter of Sin. Part Two is about Doctrine and Theology.
“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas”; still another, “I follow Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul?”
1 Corinthians 1:10-13 NIV
A house divided against itself cannot wage war against evil. The kind of evil which has been let loose among our people and manifested itself in the #BrutalMurder this week.
Paul continues :
“For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.”
1 Corinthians 1:17 NIV
This matter of the Power of the Cross of Christ, is one which is the “calling card “ of Paul. One which sadly does not enjoy the same universal approval in the church today. This as we place more emphasis on the power of doing good works, the Power of The Holy Spirit and the power of love – as if the love which is transforming, the Holy Spirit who is defining, and good works which are expected – service to mankind- did not all flow from The Atonement on Calvary.
Paul then issues a warning to the church in Corinth, the movers and shakers of this society, and to the contemporary church in this age:
“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.”
1 Corinthians 1:18-25 NIV
The session, that I am called to report on “ wakens me morning by morning …to know the word that sustains the weary”, ended with this Word.
“For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.”
1 Corinthians 2:2-5 NIV
I close with a Word that I posted on Facebook to morning. One that features the two parts well. Sin and Doctrine:
That we being delivered out of the hands of our enemies; might serve him without fear. In holiness and righteousness all the days of our lives. A life without fear only comes when we live in both Holiness and Righteousness- Always!
A post which was one of three:
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people – Luke 1:68. The world celebrates the visit -Christmas. Christians celebrate Visit and Redemption. Christmas and Good Friday. Hope after #BrutalMurder
