1970 -celebrating his 3rd World Cup title

This week, a football legend died. Edson Arantes dos Nascienmento a.k.a Pele was the King of Football across the world. Yes there other contenders to the throne. But only one reigned supreme in the minds of those who love the beautiful game. Here’s a sample, capturing beautifully a moment in time, written by a New York Times correspondent, of why Pele was regarded as the greatest:

Head and shoulders above everybody else

NEW YORK TIMES – RORY SMITH

Carlos Alberto Goal 1970 World Cup Final

Of all the myriad things Pelé did — the thousand-plus goals he scored and the array of records he set and the innumerable, immeasurable moments of wonder he conjured — the one that is the most famous, the most familiar, may also have been the most ordinary, the most mundane.

Pelé’s crowning glory was a pass, one played with a nonchalant ease in the fading minutes of the World Cup final in 1970, a moment of glorious, acoustic simplicity from a player whose name had been made and whose legend had been burnished because of his mastery of the impossibly complex.

The pass itself was not easy because of Pelé’s quick, brilliant mind, or because of his flawless technique, or because of the economy of his movement. It was not a pass that he made look easy. It was, by the standards of those who can breathe in the rarefied air of a World Cup final, a pass that was easy.

Standing a few yards outside Italy’s penalty area, he receives the ball from Jairzinho, darting in from the left. Pelé takes one touch to control it, a second to confirm receipt. He takes a third, idly, as he ponders his next move. At no point does he indicate he is in a hurry. He is essentially stationary throughout.

And then, out of the corner of his eye, he sees Carlos Alberto, his captain, charging forward to his right, a single blast of motion in a world of stillness. He waits a beat. Then he plays the pass, almost with a shrug, gently guiding the ball to the exact spot where Carlos Alberto requires it to be so that he can meet it, at full speed, without breaking stride.

That goal did more than seal Brazil’s victory over Italy in the hot, thin air of Mexico City. It did more than make Pelé the only player in history to win three World Cups. It was the ultimate expression of “o jogo bonito,” the beautiful game, soccer not as sport but as art. It was the goal that, forever more, would make Brazil Brazil.

And yet, other than perhaps his poise and arguably his vision, the pass does not display any of the traits that made Pelé Pelé. It does not showcase what The Times of London once referred to as his “feline” movement. It does not prove the assessment of Bobby Moore, the World Cup-winning England captain, that Pelé had “two good feet, [was] magic in the air, quick, powerful, could beat people with skill, could outrun people.” It does not explain why Franz Beckenbauer regarded him as “the most complete player I ever saw,” or convinced Michel Platini that “to play like Pelé is to play like God.”

THE BIBLE

But as good as Pele was, he was not, never was, and never will be my King. Only one person occupies that spot in my life. Jesus Christ and him crucified for my many sins. And Raised from the dead for my justification – as if I never sinned. And not just for me, but for the whole world. Praise God. It is in this context then that I was led to send emails to my church this week. Inspired by Christ the King, my everything, I give my love to thee.

SUNDAY – MERRY CHRISTMAS

Blessed be the  Lord God of Israel: for he hath visited and redeemed his people; and hath raised up for us, a Mighty Salvation:

This is a morning, more than any other morning   – Good Friday, “It is finished,” and Easter, “ He is Risen” call for different songs –  for us to sing with Zechariah the father of John the Baptist,  the majestic opening lines of The Benedictus.

And as we do so, note that Jesus came to visit, and not to stay. Yes, He lives within us by the power of the Holy Spirit, and Emmanuel, God with us,” will be with us until the end of the ages”, but His physical Presence is no longer with us as He was with John the Baptist and the Apostles. And so we walk by faith and not by sight of the God-Man. And more, for as God inspired Zechariah to  charge his son, John the Baptist:

“ And thou child shall be called the Prophet of the Highest”,  we who are adopted as sons and daughters of God in Christ, by the Mighty Salvation, are equally “ called out” to “ Give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death”:

…we too are called to share and manifest the same message of the Mighty Salvation in this corrupt generation.

Merry Christmas.

In obedience to the God-Man, Jesus who visited at Christmas,  and redeemed his people on Calvary. Raised from the dead on Easter. Ascended into heaven. And will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. And reign forever!

The crib, the Cross and the Crown all coming together as One – Father Mike, last night at Old Cutler Presbyterian Church in South Florida.  May we all  fall on our knees, and surrender our lives completely  to this God. Our Savior and our King!

All started in the Crib, then the Cross and finally The Crown

MONDAY – PRODUCE FRUITS OF REPENTANCE

His Birth in Me. “My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you…” (Galatians 4:19). Just as our Lord came into human history from outside it, He must also come into me from outside. Have I allowed my personal human life to become a “Bethlehem” for the Son of God? I cannot enter the realm of the kingdom of God unless I am born again from above by a birth totally unlike physical birth. “You must be born again” (John 3:7). This is not a command, but a fact based on the authority of God. The evidence of the new birth is that I yield myself so completely to God that “Christ is formed” in me. And once “Christ is formed” in me, His nature immediately begins to work through me.

Last night, after spending time on Christmas Day, on The Rock ( Jamaica)  with my brother and sister’s family, my daughter and her family and linking my son and his family in Miami, before retiring to bed after a long day, I encountered a message from Oswald Chambers; and an extract of which is above.

What’s the key message of Christmas?  And of life with a Creator God! That Christ may be formed in me, and you, and all children of God, in every denomination and in every nation.

Which is the same message from Hark the Heralds sing, the strains of which song entered my heart of raising this morning:

……Mild he lays his glory by,

born that man no more shall die,

born to raise the sons of earth,

born to give them second birth. Charles Wesley

And then I recalled how a hymn we sang at church touched my soul, challenged my soul, and gave birth to a prayer, “that Christ might be formed in me”.

Thou didst leave thy throne and thy kingly crown

When thou camest to earth for me;

But in Bethlehem’s home was there found no room

For thy holy Nativity:

Refrain:

O come to my heart Lord Jesus;

There is room in my heart for thee.

A song which inspired us to invite Jesus to come into out heart. And which prayer ought to be our Daily Bread! That Christ may be formed in me.

In this context, the fourth verse, is very instructive as to why it should be our burning desire, our daily prayer, our minutely plea ”  I need thee, O  I need thee, every hour I need thee, O bless me now my Savior I come to thee.

Thou camest, O Lord, with the living Word

That should set thy people free;

But with mocking scorn and a crown of thorn,

They bore thee to Calvary

R.

O come to my heart Lord Jesus,

There is room in my heart for thee.

The challenge for the church in this hour, on this day after Christmas Day, in this age, is that all the troubles, all the trials this nation and every nation faces, are  a direct result of rejecting the gift of  The Prince of Peace. Rejecting the Living Word, ”that should set thy people free”. In short with great sophistry, and with a veneer of Christianity being practiced in the Western World, including Jamaica and probably reaching the heights of hypocrisy in the USA, and with open hostility, “ But with mocking scorn and with crown of thorn”, Christ is still being carried to Calvary. Rejected and crucified!

The challenge for us, adopted into the family of  God, by second birth gifted by grace and by faith to those who humble themselves before this Mighty Savior, is to remain faithful to this God, and with Christ being formed in us daily, like Billy Graham “ bring Christ to the Nations”.

Declare the Gospel, the Truth of God,  like John the Baptist,  to power,  “ to produce fruits of repentance”. Produce Justice in the land. Put an end to corruption. Manifest the Righteousness of God in Governance, in the Business arena, in the Music and the Culture, in the Schools, in the Community and in the Homes where children grow and learn,  and in the Church of a Holy God, if we  really wish for The Eternal Father to Bless this land: and Guide us with Thy Mighty Hand. Otherwise we are fooling ourselves  and definitely not God who knows our hearts, and the secrets of our desires.

Many years ago at my Church,  a very discerning preacher posed this question on Easter Sunday. What do we as a church do next? And his answer was most instructive! Go back to Good Friday. In other words, make the Cross the center, the epicenter of our lives. In this context then, Christmas is only the entry point of the Salvation “ the sweet Salvation according to my Pentecostal patient”,  Story. And what this nation needs is a Church that points the way to Calvary,  and says to a Nation that would call upon the Name of The Living God,  “ God Bless Jamaica”, and “ Eternal Father Bless our Land”,  in the Parliament, in the Courts, in the Business Place, in the Schools, in the Community, in the homes, and especially in God’s House, to “ produce fruits of repentance”.

This as the late Garnet Silk, a conscious reggae artist, said famously “ God a God”. And this God who offers  the gift of Salvation, beginning at Christmas, declared long ago to a King, through an early version of John the Baptist,   Samuel, and an early version of the Judaeo -Christian Church,  that “ disobedience is worst than divination”.

We have become a Popcaan “ unruly “ nation whose slave  forebears ( the greater part of the “ out of many one people”)  revered the Living God, and knew Him as Puppa Jesus and Maasa God. Gave Him honor and glory in how they lived, and passed on this obedience to their children,  who like the children of Israel have forsake the Lord. And built for themselves a society, a  cistern, a “ broken cistern that can hold no water “ ( Jeremiah, and like him we weep for this nation).

Christmas is a time to “ Think on these things….the Anglican program on RJR on a Sunday evening…..and repent of our madness in forsaking the Living God, and placing “ flesh and blood”, no matter how smart they are, and how talented, and how powerful, and how rich they are, ” first in our hearts, and in our homes and in our social arrangements and in our governance structures. And then produce fruits of repentance acceptable to God whose Word declares that Righteousness and Justice “kiss each other”.

Shalom and in obedience to the Living God.

Lord we beseech thee to renew thy church with the power of the Holy Spirit, that Christ may be formed in us more and more each day, so that the church may renew the nation(s) so that people who live in darkness, according to Bob Marley “ you think you are in heaven but you living in hell”,  may be called to repentance, accept Christ and sing with the remnant,  “ Hark the Herald angels sing, glory to the newborn King”. And produce fruits, that will last, of repentance.

WEDNESDAY – SIMON I HAVE SOMETHING TO TELL YOU – JESUS

“When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.” Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said. “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.” “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.”

Luke 7:39-43 NIV

Led to begin my early morning devotions, again,  with the majestic opening lines of the Benedictus:

“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel : for he hath visited and redeemed his people:

And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us: in the house of his servant David”.

Even before reading the next line, I pondered on the significance of, ” in the house of his servant David”.  Then it came to me that God is a promise keeper indeed. For this mighty salvation had been promised a long time ago.

And then my mind went to one of Jesus’ teachings. About the Sower of the Seed….and in particular “ producing good fruit”, which was the message from yesterday’s reflection.

And as I “ traveled “ through Luke looking for the parable,  many other truths presented themselves.  Including one of my favorite Bible stories highlighted above.

The key question is “ which one will love Jesus more, for canceling the debts of the two men”.? This as neither of them could pay back the debt they owed  Him. And the answer that Jesus gave, in essence that those who know that they have sinned greatly,  are the ones who, when them come to know that their sins are forgiven on Calvary, are the ones who will love Jesus more than those whose only think they only have a little sin. The significance of this is profound, but in order to appreciate the true nature of what Jesus is saying, you have to read the earlier part of the story as told by Luke:

“When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.””

Luke 7:36-39 NIV

It’s the weeping that really touched my heart. But it’s the question “ Simon I have something to tell you” which has grabbed my attention over the years. This as  the Risen Christ, in and through The Holy Spirit of Truth and power and love, always has something to tell us if we would spend the time listening.

This morning’s message then is tied to the Sower of the Seeds in this sense. That if we accept the conviction of Sin by the Holy Spirit,  humble ourselves and cry out for mercy,   and the and love Jesus,  with all our hearts, because we know that we can never repay the debt that we owe Him for the suffering and shedding of His Blood on Calvary for us, “no weapon formed against us will prosper”. Whether Satan trying to  snatch the Word of Truth from our hearts, whether the trials and times of testing, or whether life’s worries, riches or pleasures! Nothing will be able to separate a humble heart full of love for Jesus, from the Savior. Nothing! And it is this humble heart, filled with gratitude for the forgiveness of our many, many sins ( Jesus washed them all away…and in the name of Jesus we shall have the victory) that seeks to know and to love Jesus with all our heart, that will bear much fruit in this corrupt and unbelieving  generation.

In obedience. Shalom.

 LWJ.

Lord we beseech thee, to renew thy church with the remnant who listen to you without ceasing so that a renewed church may always have something to say to a confused world,  with authority: “ I have something to tell you”.

Repent and believe the Gospel of Jesus crucified for your sins and raised from the dead for your justification – as if you had never sinned. And to give you new and abundant life!

THURSDAY – HAVING THE MIND OF CHRIST

The New Testament

Philippians 2:5-11

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,

who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited,

but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.

And being found in human form,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death–
even death on a cross.

Therefore God also highly exalted him
and gave him the name
that is above every name,

so that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue should confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

One of two readings appointed for New Year’s Day, this Sunday, as highlighted above, is extremely challenging. For the laity, and even more so for the ordained. We need to pray for both. Ourselves and the priests. For the gift of humility! The essence of the Word about the Mind of Christ. Why?

Think about it carefully in this context.

All baptized persons who are faithful to the Living God, if we willingly suffer with Christ, we  will become “ heirs and co-heirs with Christ” in the Kingdom of God.

All baptized persons who are faithful to the Living God, in them, “ you are the temple of God”.  Therefore you are no longer your own, but have been bought by the price of the Blood of Jesus.

This is staggering truth! Especially when you recall the grand opening lines of the psalm appointed for Sunday:

The Psalm

Psalm 8

Domine, Dominus noster

1 O Lord our Governor, *
how exalted is your Name in all the world!

2 Out of the mouths of infants and children *
your majesty is praised above the heavens.

The Bible nowhere says that we are equal with God, but the promise of being co-heir with Christ, and that God lives in us by the power of the Holy Spirit, is just simply awesome. And if we are not careful, in how we treat each other, at different levels of the Church, we can succumb to the awful temptation of become haughty and “ exalted in our own minds”. And worse, in how we treat with “ sinners”, those who are not yet baptized, some of whom are causing  untold mayhem in the land, pride and a sense of accomplishment – where none exists, as grace has attended us and not any works of our own -are forever knocking on our doorstep. Mercy Lord, mercy!

We need to really grasp the fullness of this mind of Christ, and “ empty ourselves” , humble ourselves and become obedient to the Word of God, and the Truth as revealed by the Holy Spirit. Not to the point of death. No! As that victory has already been achieved for us by the shed Blood of Christ. But certainly to the point of  “ death to the old self”, and to allow “ In Christ all things  are made new” to be manifest in our lives. In how we treat with each other first. “ See how those Christians love each other”. And then “ to rescue the perishing, and seek the lost, care for the dying and bind up the wounded. #Ezekiel  In #wrongaddresses  and everywhere those made in the image and likeness of God dwell. Even the vilest offenders.

A line  from a well known hymn provides a fitting bookend for  this message. Just came into my head. No! Not from nowhere or out of the blue. But from the Living God.

As He died to make men holy, let us live  to make men free

While God is marching on

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

His truth is marching on.

From: Mine Eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord. Christ has died. Christ is Risen. Christ will come again – not to save this time but to judge. Therefore we have work to do as people possessing the mind of Christ. The One who humbled Himself and died to save all mankind.

In obedience.

Shalom.

LWJ

Lord we pray thee to place within us by the power of the Holy Spirit, according to your promise, the mind of your Son Christ and Him crucified. Not for our glory Lord, but for your glory. So that in and through us, people living in this and every nation may hear the Words our Blessed Savior:

1. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matthew 11.

In this SOE country. In this Sting gone mad country. In this crazy driving country. In this toxic masculinity country. In this morally adrift country …not bankrupt…. But seriously adrift. In both State and in  some measure, talk the truth, Church also.

FRIDAY – PEE WAS NO KING, BUT A SINNER IN NEEED OF SALVATION

“And Mary said,

My soul doth magnify the Lord,

And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden:

For, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things;

And holy is his name.

And his mercy is on them that fear him

From generation to generation.

He hath shewed strength with his arm;

He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their seats,

And exalted them of low degree.

He hath filled the hungry with good things;

And the rich he hath sent empty away.

He hath holpen his servant Israel,

In remembrance of his mercy;

As he spake to our fathers,

To Abraham, and to his seed for ever.”

Luke 1:46-55 KJV

This morning as I began reading the Gospel appointed for Sunday, New Year’s Day:

The Gospel

Luke 2:15-21

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb:

The Magnificat by Mary, who had pondered these things in her heart, came to mind. And so I was led to ponder these things in my heart also. The things that Mary highlighted in this famous song!

And was led also to read The Benedictus, just a few verses down from The Magnificat.

I’m sure we all encountered in high school the task of “ compare and contrast”. Well this time as led by the Spirit, this foundation Bible Truth stayed with me. Truth that emerges from both songs.

That:

He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their seats,

And exalted them of low degree.

He hath filled the hungry with good things;

And the rich he hath sent empty away.

That:

“As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets,

which have been since the world began:

That we should be saved from our enemies,

and from the hand of all that hate us;

To perform the mercy promised to our fathers,

And to remember his holy covenant;

The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

That he would grant unto us,

that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies

Might serve him without fear,

In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.”

Luke 1:70-75 KJV

And as we ponder these things in our heart, God Himself will “ provide the explanation”. We don’t need to try and explain these things on our own. So into my mind came the full explanation which we all need to ponder on in the New Year. And forever!

““To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:

These are the words of the Amen,

the faithful and true witness,

the ruler of God’s creation.

I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.

I wish you were either one or the other!

So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.”

Revelation 3:14-18 NIV

You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked…….says it all. The  most dangerous state for a Christian, and anyone else in the world, to be in. Shotgun 2 which I watched with my family, Kimare and her family,  last night is a wonderfully entertaining movie. But that’s not reality in the eyes of God. For He indeed “ hath put down the mighty from their seat”.

That’s why we ought to sing without ceasing Amazing Grace and ponder on these things:

…..that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I am found. Was blind but now I see. Praise God. Thank God for Jesus.

In that context Pele was no King, no royalty. A wonderful footballer and shining example of why we love the beautiful game, yes. But that’s it. Otherwise a sinner like you and I,  in need of salvation. I pray God that he made peace with God before he died. This as the rich and famous and powerful are in terrible danger of “ losing their minds”, and believing that wealth and fame and powerful and the “lettered”, can save them at the time of judgment. That’s not what the Bible teaches. That’s not what we learn from Mary. Nor from Zechariah. But rather that:

That he would grant unto us,

that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies

Might serve him without fear,

In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.”

Our country Jamaica is in trouble. And so too the USA! Why?  Because we have too many powerful people who believe that they have no need of God, and do  not realize that they are :

“But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.”

The role of those who ponder these things in our hearts, the church,  is to speak Truth to those who believe that they do not need God, that they are “ sitting in darkness and living in the shadow of death”, and need to believe the gospel and repent, before Jesus comes again to judge the world. For there are only three seasons that matter after the first Christmas when “ a great Light came into the world”.

Christ has died. Christ is Risen. Christ will come again. Two are gone and only one is left. We do well to be obedient and warn people to escape from this “ corrupt generation”. They and their children!  Which was final message of Peter’s first sermon at Pentecost.

In obedience.

Shalom.

Lord Jesus Christ Son of the Living God, we beseech thee to renew your church in holiness and righteousness, so that a renewed church may renew the nation(s) people are living in great danger, in darkness and in the shadow of death. Mercy Lord. Mercy!

Today is Christmas Eve! Tomorrow on Christmas Day families all across the world will gather to celebrate the birth of Christ, the Son of God. Many will be in Church. But not all. Many will give thanks for Jesus and what He has done for us #Salvation. But not all. We all know what our newspapers will say about Christmas – a time of giving. A time of peace. Wars have been suspended for the day, in order to celebrate Christmas. But thank God we also know what the Bible says about Christ. This morning instead of featuring a news item, and there were many including the historic visit of the President of War torn Ukraine, under siege by aggressive Russian forces, to the USA, I am moved to present a song for the ages. All because of Christmas, we can have a relationship with our Creator God, and in and though Him, know that one fine day, all wars will be over. And there shall be peace on the land. For the Putin’s of this world, the scammers and “ murderer, blood is on your shoulder”, shall be no more.

We Place All Our Future
In Your Hands, In Your Hands
We Bid You Take Over All Our Lives, Lord
Our Dreams, Aspirations, All Our Best, Jesus Lord
Our Hopes, Our Fears, In Your Hands.

Refrain. In Your Hands, Lord We Place Today Tomorrow
In Your Hands, Lord We Surrender All.
In Your Hands, We Commit Our Joys, Our Sorrows
In Your Hands, Lord We Surrender All.

Keep Walking Beside Us
Every Night, Every Day
And Give Us The Courage For The Fray, Lord
We Need You To Guide Us, Every Step Of The Way
Forsake Us Not, Lord We Pray.

(R)

You Place Many Duties
In Our Hands, In Our Hands,
And Shaping Our World Is Our Task, Lord
On You We Depend Lord For The Power; This We Ask
That All Makes Sense In Our Hands.

(R)

So Lord We Are Trusting
Everything To Your Hands,
And Then We Keep Praying For This Land, Lord
To Labor With Others For The Best, Jesus, Lord,
Our All We Place In Your Hands.

THE BIBLE – the main email to my church this week:

FRIDAY

The New Testament

Titus 2:11-14

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.

There is so much theological truth in the Epistle appointed for Christmas Day. Sunday! But all I am inspired  to comment on, at this time,  is that God’s grace and God’s love and God’s mercy, are not just descriptions and features  of the Lord God of Israel, the God of Hosts, but fully manifest in a Person. …”for the grace of God has appeared”….And that God-man is Christ the King. The only Mediator between a Holy  God and  sinful man.

And so we sing at Christmas, on Good Friday, on Easter, and every day:

Blessed be the  Lord God of Israel: for he hath visited and redeemed his people; and hath raised up for us, a Mighty Salvation; in the house of his servant David- the majestic opening lines of The Benedictus;  Zachariah’s song, and the father of  John the Baptist, which he was inspired to sing  at  the birth of his son.

And so we sing as the hymn writer wrote, and which song came into my heart and caused me to call my sister in Christ yesterday, with joy in my heart.

‘So I can love thee too O Lord, almighty as thou art, for thou hast stooped to ask of me the love of my poor heart’ – from “ My God how wonderful thou art”

A truth embodied in the Person of Jesus Christ, born at Christmas “ Joy to the World”, and crucified on Good Friday, and raised from the dead with power on the glorious Easter. That sinful mankind can truly love The Almighty and Holy  God, but only if we believe that in Christ, ‘ He stooped to ask of us the love of my poor heart.

And it is that Truth, that we have been rescued from sin and death by this loving God,  why an old Saint, and a former Bishop was  led to write one of the most profound, instructive, and yet simple, meditations I have ever read in my Classics Devotional Bible which is populated with so many.

SATURATED WITH THE SPIRIT

Hilary of Potiers

Verse: Acts 20:24

Hoisting  My Sails

The chief service I owe you, O God, is that, every thought and word of mine should speak of  you. The power of speech which you have bestowed on me can give me no greater pleasure than to serve you by preaching your gospel.

But in saying this, I am merely expressing what I want to do. If I am actually to use this gift, I must ask you for your help – ask you to fill my sails that I have hoisted for you with the wind of your Holy Spirit, inspiring my mind and my voice. I know that I am often heavy with stupor ( or some other distraction) so that I am too lazy to to speak of you . And I do not spend sufficient time studying your Word ( guilty as charged). Give me the  energy and the courage to share the spirit of the apostles, that like them may truly be an ambassador ( like Paul was) of your grace.

Shalom and in obedience.

LWJ

May this Almighty God renew His Church this Christmas, with the power of the Holy Spirit, so that “ every thought and word of ours should speak of Him”. He who redeemed us in Christ Jesus, and sent us with power to speak Truth, to reveal Christ to the nations, ( Billy Graham) so that in the nation(s) where men and women are living in darkness and in the shadow of death, may in and through us, see and hear Christ, the only Mediator between God and man, and accept the gift of a mighty Salvation, and “live and not die”.

NEWSPAPERS

Jamaicans go crazy, not just during the Olympics, but whenever there is a Global Track and Field event. As this is Usain Bolt, Shelly Ann Fraser Price, VCB, Asafa Powell, and Elaine Thompson Herah country! And of late Sherika Jackson country. Jamaica is also Bob Marley country “ hit me with music you feel no pain”. And in the present context of World Cup Football which will have, hopefully, a glorious ending this Sunday in Qatar, Jamaica is Brazil country. For nowhere else in the world, would a judge of a popular high school choir competition, “ All Together Sing”, declare on TV, that a performance he just heard and witnessed, sounded “ Brazilian”. And “ You just scared a goal”!

But Brazil having exited the competition, heartbreakingly for many, in the knockout phase, at the round of eight, all eyes are now on the greatest footballer of this age, Lionel Messi and his “ One Argentina”. Yes, there is some support for “ Vive la France”, but nowhere near to the massive support for the men in “ blue and white”.

Here’s a sample of the “ pure excitement “ on Twitter:

❗️More than 50,000 Argentines will be present for the World Cup final on Sunday. 4,000 blue white balloons, 6,000 flags, 2,000 scarves, etc. There’s no precedent for something like this in the World Cup finals history, Argentina will be local. @scagliola_lucas 💥🇦🇷

BREAKING: FIFA have rejected a request by Ukrainian President Zelensky to broadcast a live speech to the World Cup Final before the game……can’t verify this from SGMWorldnews

South American and European sides have met in the World Cup final 10 times.

South American teams have won seven of them.

European teams have won two of the last three.

Bring it on ⏳

EXCLUSIVE: FIFA rebuffed Ukrainian President Zelensky’s request to share a message of world peace at the World Cup final, source says…..CNN

Tomorrow, Davido will become the 1st African artiste to perform at a World Cup Final. Aggressive PR & Maturity can’t get you this record!!

🚨BREAKING: With just a couple of days left in the World Cup final, Lionel Messi has tested positive for being the greatest footballer of all time.

And by “ coincidence “, maybe or maybe not, after the “ pure excitement “ of the Greatest Show on Earth, exactly one week later, we will celebrate, at least in the Christian West, the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Christmas. And then exactly one week later, again, “ We wish you a Happy New Year” will ring out across the world!

What an excitement!

THE BIBLE

The Bible however, presents another perspective. Not excitement about Christmas, but rather presents Christmas as a sign for all humanity. A global message, yes, but equally so, a personal message spoken long ago before social media was even thought about, by the prophet Isaiah:

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”

Isaiah 9:2 NIV

Darkness! Where is the darkness in this age of Twitter and Instagram and YouTube and Netflix and everything streaming live to all parts of the world in seconds. Darkness! Where is the darkness? The answer is not famously “ Blowing in the Wind” made popular by Stan Getz, but in a parable I was led to read at 4:30 am this morning – which led to the Isaiah passage – taught by Jesus. Shared with “the crowd “ but only explained to his disciples. As Jesus quoted a verse from Isaiah concerning those on the outside:

“ everything is said in parables, ‘ that they may be ever seeing but not perceiving”, and ever hearing but never understanding otherwise they may turn and be forgiven. The subject of the parable and the explanation makes for interesting and even prophetic reading. But the point which I was led to share is that unless you are a disciple of Christ, and fully receive the message of Christmas, the sign given by God to all mankind, and not get caught up with the glitter and “ pure excitement” of Christmas Bob Marley has a word for you, inspired by the Word of God:

“ You think you are in heaven but you’re living in hell”. In other words living in darkness, as you will die in your sins. And where you will go, there will no “ pure excitement “ there. I don’t know if you will find Messi or Mbappe there, in “ utter darkness”, but if so, they will definitely not be playing the “ beautiful game”. Only suffering! Eternally.

Christmas is a wake up call. For all humankind. That one fine day God will judge all of us, if we ignore the ( only) Light of the World

In this context then I was led to write to my church this week:

SUNDAY : My God I love thee, not because …..

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father

There is no shadow of turning with Thee

Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not

As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be

Great is Thy faithfulness

Great is Thy faithfulness

Morning by morning new mercies I see

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest

Sun, moon and stars in their courses above

Join with all nature in manifold witness

To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love

Great is Thy faithfulness

Great is Thy faithfulness

Morning by morning new mercies I see

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth

Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide

Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow

Blessings all mine with 10, 000 beside

Great is Thy faithfulness

Great is Thy faithfulness

Morning by morning new mercies I see

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

Great is Thy faithfulness

Lord, unto me

I got up, just woke up, at minutes to six this morning.and as I began my early morning devotions, into my mind came the words of the hymn above.  The first two verses were interesting. But the last one was arresting! Pardon for sin! Enduring peace…O how my country could be a different place today. Thy own Presence to cheer and to guide…what a blessed assurance …doesn’t matter what is going on around us….neither death nor life, nor angels…nor demons…nor scammers….nor extortionists….nor the corrupt of the land…sucking the blood of the people …Bob Marley…nor the immoral …enshrined in law now in the USA..nor the wicked…can separate us from the presence of the Almighty God. Strength for today…whether France wins the World Cup or not…whether Morocco brings joy to Africa…..whether or not gunmen go on rampage…whether or not SOE’s…whether in sickness or health…yes and we pray for the sick…..in You and only in You O God we have strength for today..and tomorrow and for evermore….and bright hope for tomorrow…that under God we can ignite a nation for greatness…not without…and play our part in advancing the whole human race…in Africa…in Asia…..and not just in the “ diaspora”.

And blessings will flow in and through Christ, the crucified One in whom we have pardon for sin.

Then my mind went to another hymn, which I learnt by “ heart’ during my high school devotions at Jamaica College…is there a message there for today…for the education system under siege ..within and without. But didn’t find what I thought was there.

And so close by  in my hymnbook,  the Lord led me from 223 to 236 below:

O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
consider all the works thy hand hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
thy power throughout the universe displayed;

Refrain: Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
how great thou art, how great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
how great thou art, how great thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
and hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:

Then sings my soul…

And when I think that God, his Son not sparing,
sent him to die – I scarce can take it in
that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
he bled and died to take away my sin:

Then sings my soul…

When Christ shall come with shouts of acclamation
and take me home – what joy shall fill my heart!
Then shall I bow in humble adoration
and there proclaim, ‘my God, how great thou art!’

Then sings my soul…

Again I found the first two interesting but not arresting. But O Lord my God what a revelation in verses three and four:

God, His only Son, not sparing! For me a sinner, a wretch, and one of Adam’s helpless race…it’s personal, very personal…..and yet  For God so loved the world…it’s all of us.

Sent him to die! O Jesus…..I love thee…not because you raised Lazarus from the dead…..nor  because you healed the woman with the issue of blood…not because you healed the lepers…not because you gave sight to the blind……but thou O my Jesus….the nails and the spears and the manifold disgrace on Calvary ( My God I love thee, Not because…138) ……died a horrible and yet substitutionary death for me …who was thine enemy….on Calvary…..then how can I not love thee O Lord….you who bled and died to take away my sin…O Jesus how truly great thou art.

And then as we light the candles of Love and Hope and Joy in this Advent season…..we acknowledge that You shall come again with shouts  of acclamation to take me…and O I pray God…all with whom I and all your disciples have shared the Good News of how great thou art…take us all home.

Then I shall bow…not before any royalty…nor curtsy…..nor genuflect…nor sell my soul at the altar of power and fleshly desires..and the tempting sounds of this world…but before you O my God, and there proclaim How Great Thou art.

Mercy Lord mercy.

Peace and in obedience

LWJ

O faithful and everlasting Lord we pray you to renew your church through the knowledge of your Son who bled and died to take away our sin; Lord renew your church that the church may be faithful and share the Good News of Christ has died, Christ is Risen, Christ will come again, to take us all home, with all the nations, so that we will all proclaim, one fine day,  How Great Thou art.

MONDAY : Repent and believe the Gospel

The Response

Psalm 80:1-7, 16-18

Qui regis Israel

1 Hear, O Shepherd of Israel, leading Joseph like a flock; *
shine forth, you that are enthroned upon the cherubim.

2 In the presence of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, *
stir up your strength and come to help us.

3 Restore us, O God of hosts; *
show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.

4 O Lord God of hosts, *
how long will you be angered
despite the prayers of your people?

5 You have fed them with the bread of tears; *
you have given them bowls of tears to drink.

6 You have made us the derision of our neighbors, *
and our enemies laugh us to scorn.

7 Restore us, O God of hosts; *
show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.

16 Let your hand be upon the man of your right hand, *
the son of man you have made so strong for yourself.

17 And so will we never turn away from you; *
give us life, that we may call upon your Name.

18 Restore us, O Lord God of hosts; *
show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.

Comment: I woke up this morning, a bit early, not four am early, minutes to five, and immediately into my heart came a song which I had not heard for years, but one which was very familiar:

My God is real….For I can feel Him in my soul. Had to google it, to find the full lyrics…..Yes God is real, for He has washed and made me whole.

Then I opened my Bible randomly and Paul’s letter to the Philippians presented itself, and what stayed with me was :

“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 1:3-6 NIV

Then I turned to the readings for next Sunday, the fourth Sunday in Advent and the Response to the Old Testament Reading, and the Psalm above, stayed with me. Why?

Listen carefully and hear the cry of the people thousands of years ago, being repeated in this very age:

4 O Lord God of hosts, *
how long will you be angered
despite the prayers of your people?

5 You have fed them with the bread of tears; *
you have given them bowls of tears to drink.

6 You have made us the derision of our neighbors, *
and our enemies laugh us to scorn.

7 Restore us, O God of hosts; *
show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.

16 Let your hand be upon the man of your right hand, *
the son of man you have made so strong for yourself.

17 And so will we never turn away from you; *
give us life, that we may call upon your Name

How long will God be angry with this nation  where murder abounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed. Where school children are terrorizing teachers. Where gross immorality is given cover within and without the church:

“They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. “Peace, peace,” they say, when there is no peace.”

Jeremiah 8:11 NIV

Where corruption in high places, and idolatry dancing in the streets and in the communities, apostasy being paraded as cultural change, which our grandparents did not know or even heard of,  has provoked the Lord of hosts of our slave forbears who the Lord set free with a mighty hand:

“ Why have they aroused my anger with their images and with their worthless foreign idols.”

A land where money makes the mare run, makes our women do terrible things, and entice our men to be come scammers and extortionists and wicked. A land where chaos reigns on our roads, causing much outrage and suffering and grief.

And so there were people then, and now , people crying out, “ fed with tears, and given bowls of tears to drink”. We have become one of the most murderous countries in the world, and a laughingstock to our neighbors, if not literally but certainly metaphorically. And so the people then, as the people now call out for mercy. For God to show Himself and we shall be saved!  And so in the fullness of time God sent his Son, Jesus, to save us from our sins, and “ from hands too strong for them”….Psalm 35: 10. ( bedtime reading every night for years)

The message for this nation of SOE’s,  on the one hand,  and a cry for better parenting on the other hand, in this and any age, by the called out people of God, the Church,  according to the Psalmist, is to worship the Son of God, Jesus Christ,  and be obedient to Him. To repent and believe the Gospel for the kingdom of God is at hand.

For there is no other Name given to men that they may be saved. Otherwise Jamaica, and in all the nations, where Christ does not rule in the hearts of mankind,  will continue to be given tears to drink, as bloodshed follows bloodshed and the land continues to mourn. Whether by mass shootings in the USA, or by gangs in Jamaica.

This as God: Father Son and Holy Spirit is very real; and will judge the whole world one day. This,  as Paul warned the people of Athens ( who  spent their time doing nothing but listening to the latest ideas….listening to people like Mutty Perkins et al)  God calls all people everywhere to repent.

“For He has set  a day when he will judge the earth with justice by the man who he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead”. Acts 17:31.

Therefore every time we in church declare “ Christ has died, Christ is Risen, Christ will come again”, the threefold assertion of our faith, we are,  on the one hand declaring Hope in the God of Jacob and of our forefathers. But on the hand declaring Judgment for those who reject the mighty salvation announced in the Benedictus by the Father of John the Baptist.

Pray God that like Paul we will be obedient to He who began a good work in us, in and though Christ and Him crucified,  and will carry it to completion in the end. When Christ shall come again. In glory, to judge the living and the dead.

Peace and in obedience to my God who is very real.

LWJ

O God of Abraham, God of Isaac and God of Jacob, we beseech thee in these times of tears and untold grief in our nation, to restore your Church by the Man you have appointed, even Jesus Christ and Him Crucified, that we may be obedient to Him by your grace and mercy; O God of Jacob we beseech thee to restore your Church, that your church may be empowered to call a nation to repentance,  and be rescued from the coming Judgement by producing fruits of repentance – Justice and Righteousness .

TUESDAY : Christ has died, Christ is Risen, Christ will come again

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.””

Acts 17:24-31 NIV

As I awoke this morning, a quote in my Classics Devotional Bible came to mind. Wasn’t sure of the exact words, so I went searching for it. But without success.  The essence of it though,  is that Christianity is not about “ this was said, but this happened”. And what happened is reflected in the Word of God above, about which I was led to write yesterday.  And return to today!

The Crucified Jesus was raised from the dead!  That’s it. Everything, all power, all truth that we need to know as children of God, flow from the fact that something happened. And because of that “ Mighty Salvation” about which the father of John the Baptist prophetically announced to the  first to the Jews,  and then through the Apostles, to the Gentiles, the “ goyim – all non Jews”,   all people everywhere are called to repent. For God has set a day when He will judge the world by the man He has appointed – Christ the Crucified, Risen and soon coming again One.

I am led to share, as I shared elsewhere recently,  in this context a quote from a Book I would recommend to you:

“God shall have all of me” said William Boothe famously when he was convicted by these words uttered by his teacher “ A soul dies every minute”  …..These words electrified William. Suddenly , he came face-to-face with the biggest question imaginable. If he died that day would his soul enter heaven?  And the question forced  a second question; Was he  going to fully commit himself to the God he had so often heard about – or keep on with his halfhearted worship”.

And as we know the rest as they say is history ( The quote is from Eric Metaxas , the New York best selling author of Bonhoeffer in his book “ Seven  More Men….which includes  Billy Graham. The first one included William Wilberforce and others).”

Comment: The point is that William Boothe who founded the  World Famous Salvation Army, first began his ministry, led by conviction that souls, including his own,  were in danger of damnation, if they  did not know Christ. And then led by another conviction he started what would become first,  The Mission, which then later morphed into the Salvation Army. This quote explains why:

“ The Booths ( Catherine and William operated as a team) believed that the greatest good they could do for the poor was to point them to Christ. But they realized ‘ it was not enough to preach the gospel to the poor……that preaching had to be complemented by taking care of the physical needs of the poor’………As William put it. “ What’s the use of preaching the Gospel to men whose whole attention is concentrated upon a mad desperate struggle to keep themselves alive”?

They needed Christ, that was certain – but they also needed blankets and boots and food for their bellies”.

But in order that we never forget the first priority of saving souls, including our own, lest we perish at the judgment, when Christ shall come again, in glory, I share with you  what was reported as William Booth’s first sermon:

“ His first sermon under a big tent was on Sunday July, 2, 1865 ( does that date sound familiar …Emancipation year? Hmm!).

“ Imagine a man headed for  Niagara Falls, but he does not know what is ahead of him, nor does he care. The weather is nice, the sun is shining and he is not worried about a thing ( in our context probably waiting to watch the World Cup match, or Netflix later…..Harry and Meghan series maybe). He paddles out  into the stream and suddenly he feels the current tugging him. He is going , going…..”

Booth leaned over, as though he were peering over the falls. “ My God”, he shouted. “ The boater has gone over the  —- and he never pulled an oar! That’s how people are dammed: They go on, they have no time, they do not think – they neglected  salvation – and they are lost.

Booth had the crowd’s attention and told them that if they were willing to confess  their sins, Jesus would save them, giving them eternal life. Listeners lined up at the penitential rail, where Booth prayed with them and explained how they should go about living their new lives for God.”

Comment. I close with these thoughts. That not everyone, not every child of God is called to be an evangelist, or to feed the poor and  the hungry, directly like what William Booth famously did….and his memory, the work,  still continues by the grace of God . But we are all called to believe and proclaim the whole Gospel of Christ. That Christ died for our sins. That Christ was raised from the dead for our “ justification”, and  by the gift of the Holy Spirit to  make us “ A New Creation” ( so that self, the old man the old woman  will be crucified) filled with power, “ streams of living water flowing from us”, to do good, for the glory of God, and for the benefit of all  mankind. That Christ will come again “ to judge the world with justice “. Both the living and the dead. So there will come one fine day an accounting!

And with that understanding,  allow God in Christ, who suffered and died for us, because of love, to have all  of us like William Booth.   Fully commit ourselves to God and not serve or worship Him, in any hall-hearted fashion.

In other words , trust  in the Lord with all our hearts. And He will direct our paths. To save souls from damnation, and to do good works according His will and purpose.

In the name of Jesus, and in obedience,  may God’s peace attend you today as you continue to believe in and act upon the “Mighty Salvation “,  Who is Christ and Him Crucified, Raised and soon coming again”.

LWJ

Lord we beseech thee to renew your Church with the power of the Holy Spirit, He who reveals all truth to us; Lord renew your Church that the Church may  renew the nation(s) where souls are heading over the spiritual  “Niagara Falls” of this life, and into eternal damnation if they don’t know Christ.

In this context,  Brazil’s defeat at the World Cup, is the least of Neymar’s troubles if he  doesn’t know Christ

THURSDAY : Against you, you only have I sinned

JESUS CHRIST – THE MIDDLE WAY

Blaise Pascal

Verse: Psalm 51: 1

The God of the Christians is not a God who is simply the author of mathematical truths ( Pascal was also a brilliant scientist, or of the order of the elements,as is the god of the pagans and of Epicureans. Nor is he merely a God who providentially disposes the life an fortunes of men, to crown his worshipers with with length of happy years.

Such was the portion of the Jews. But the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, the God of Christians,is a God of love and consolation, a God who fills the souls and hearts of his own, a God who makes them feel their inward wretchedness and his infinite mercy, who unites himself to their inward spirit, filling it with humility and joy, with confidence and love, rendering them incapable of any other but himself.

All who seek God apart from Jesus Christ, and who rest in nature, either find no light to satisfy them, or form for themselves a means of knowing God and serving him without a mediator. Thus they fall either into atheism or into deism, two things which the Christian religion almost equally abhors.

The God of Christians is a God who makes the soul perceive that he is her only good, that her only rest is in him, her only joy in loving him; who makes her at the same time abhor the obstacles which withhold her from loving him with all her strength. Her two hindrances, self-love and lust are insupportable to her. This God makes her perceive that the root of self-love destroys her, and that he alone can heal.

The knowledge of God without that of our wretchedness creates pride. The knowledge of our wretchedness without that of God creates despair. The knowledge of Jesus Christ is the middle way, because in him we find both God and our wretchedness.

This morning,  searching for my early morning prayers in my Classics Devotional Bible, this alternative above presented it self. And so I spent some time, as led by the Spirit, remembering before God my sins, and asking for forgiveness. Joining with David, who was quick to promise vengeance on the man who had stolen the poor man’s lamb, until Nathan, in obedience to God, confronting the King, with his heinous sin, of “ sleeping with Bathsheba”. “ You’re the man”!

And so in response David prayed, not just wrote, Psalm 51. Prayed after admitting that “ Against you, you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight so that you are  proved right when you speak”, for a “ new pure heart and a renewed and steadfast spirit”.  Which is the message of the verses which are recommended reading for the Meditation by Blaise Pascal – one of the brightest minds recorded in history and who was also a Christian apologist, a defender of the faith.

BLAISE PASCAL

Blaise Pascal ( 1623-1662) was one of the greatest minds that ever lived. When he was only in his teens, he wrote advanced book on mathematics, astonishing people. He became a great philosopher, mathematician and thinker.

One night he met God, and his whole word was changed. He wrote down his experience on a piece of paper while it was still fresh in  his mind. According to his testimony, from 10: 30 pm to about 12: 30 am., he was overwhelmed by the presence of God. To express what he was experiencing , he wrote one word, “ fire”.

Pascal was neither a fanatic nor an ignorant farmer with hayseeds back of his ears. He was a great intellectual.  God broke through all of that and for two solid hours, he experienced something he could only characterize later as fire……..

That man could explain many mysteries of the world, but he was awestruck before the wonder of wonders, even Jesus Christ. His worship flowed out of the encounter with that “ fire” and not out of his understanding of who and what God is.

David was a great King, and in and through whom God had won much glory for himself. In fact we read that David was a man after God’s own heart. But it took a confrontation by Nathan for him, this great King, to come to a true understanding of his wretchedness before a holy God. Without which experience, Pascal, and the weight of the history of the children of God, support him, pride overtakes our hearts.

Listen to Joshua again as he spoke to the children of Israel before leading them into the promised land:

“Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you.””

Joshua 24:19-20 NIV

Which also reminds me of a message from the Lord which came during my  lunchtime devotions this week:

““Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.

But if you do warn the wicked person to turn from their ways and they do not do so, they will die for their sin, though you yourself will be saved. “Son of man, say to the Israelites, ‘This is what you are saying: “Our offenses and sins weigh us down, and we are wasting away because of them. How then can we live?” ’ Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, people of Israel?’

“Therefore, son of man, say to your people, ‘If someone who is righteous disobeys, that person’s former righteousness will count for nothing. And if someone who is wicked repents, that person’s former wickedness will not bring condemnation. The righteous person who sins will not be allowed to live even though they were formerly righteous.’ If I tell a righteous person that they will surely live, but then they trust in their righteousness and do evil, none of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered; they will die for the evil they have done. And if I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ but they then turn away from their sin and do what is just and right— if they give back what they took in pledge for a loan, return what they have stolen, follow the decrees that give life, and do no evil—that person will surely live; they will not die.

None of the sins that person has committed will be remembered against them. They have done what is just and right; they will surely live. “Yet your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ But it is their way that is not just. If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and does evil, they will die for it. And if a wicked person turns away from their wickedness and does what is just and right, they will live by doing so. Yet you Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ But I will judge each of you according to your own ways.””

Ezekiel 33:7-20 NIV

The challenge we face, as Christians, and thank God for Jesus we have help, in and through the gift of the Holy Spirit, if we cry out to God, day and night for mercy, is to become comfortable with ourselves. Forget whose were, who we were, and where we are going. And it is only a full realization of what David experienced, and what inspired  the hymn writer to pen these famous words, “Amazing grace that saved a wretch like me”, that will prevent pride from entering our hearts and corrupting our souls. Prevent us from having the same attitude that William Boothe had when he declared “ God shall have all of me”.  And then to “love mercy, do Justice an walk humbly with our God”.

Yes, David also wrote these comforting words,as i was led to read this morning:

“The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”

Psalms 103:8-12 NIV

But only after we accept that God in Christ has rescued us from the “pit of hell”. Which is where our wretchedness would have landed us, were it not for the suffering substitutionary  death of  Jesus, for our sins, on Calvary.

“Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits— who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

Psalms 103:1-5 NIV

Peace and in obedience.

LWJ

Lord Jesus Christ Son of the Living God, we beseech thee to renew your church by the power of the Holy Spirit, by reminding us that once were blind but now we see, once we were lost but now we are found, only in and through your Blood shed for us wretched sinners on Calvary: Lord renew your church that your church may renew the nation(s) lost in sin and full of wretched people with no hope except they  turn and repent and believe the Gospel.

Mercy Lord mercy.

FRIDAY : When God calls a man he calls him to die

This morning as I began my early morning devotions with the first part of Jacob’s Boheme’s Prayers:

ON WAKING

Living Lord, you have watched over me, and put your hand on my head during the long, dark hours of night. Your holy angels have protected me from all harm and pain. To you, Lord, I owe life itself. Continue to watch over me and bless me during the hours of day:

…..a wave of thanksgiving came over me, as I thanked God that it is He alone who woke me up this morning,  and protected  me from evil last night. Not luck, not fortune. And this is the reason why most mornings I awake with the grand opening lines of The Benedictus, the prayer of Zechariah, the Father of John the Baptist,  in my heart:

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel: for he hath visited and redeemed his people; and hath raised up for us a mighty salvation; in the house of his servant David.

And not wake up with the World Cup my mind. No Messi. No Mbappe. Not even Christmas and the joy  of being with family again. And definitely not how to solve the mystery of crime and violence in my country and the chaos and carnage on our roads. Only the blessed salvation. Or as country people, and those of an evangelical background  say,  “ the sweet salvation”

And I as I prayed to the Lord God Almighty, memory of a reflection which I have shared before, came to mind. About our commitment to this God who in Christ offers us a mighty salvation. Offers sinners, wretched people, while we were lost in sin, and helpless and without hope in this world,  offers us forgiveness and a promise of eternal life and power to help others lost in sin and suffering from injustice and oppression. What then should be our response. A saint and a Bishop of yore speaks from “ beyond the grave “ to us this morning.

Saturated in His Love

Although I am dust and ashes, Lord, I am tied to you by bonds of love. Therefore I feel I can speak freely to you. Before I came to know you, I was nothing ( truly nothing although we felt otherwise). I did not know the meaning of life, and I had no understanding of myself. I have no doubt that you had a purpose in causing me to be born, yet you had no need of me, and on my own I was of no use to you.

But then you decided that I should hear the words of your Son Jesus Christ ( Praise God). And that as I heard  his words, you enabled his love to penetrate my heart. Now I am completely saturated in his love and faith, and there is no remedy. Now, Lord, I cannot change my attitude to my faith, I can only die for it.

Comment: I can only die for it! Which is what the great theologian and Christian martyr declared in his seminal book “ Ethics” that when God calls a man and woman, he calls them to die.

Peace and in obedience.

LWJ

Lord Jesus we pray thee that you would renew your church with your Spirit of truth and power, so that we may be willing and empowered to die to self, and live only for you, and so help to renew the nation(s) where souls are dying every day, with no hope,  and living each day with no lasting peace. Mercy Lord, mercy.

NEWSPAPERS

Yes! My team Brazil lost and are going home. But that’s not the news which grabbed my attention this week. #WarnockvsWalker stayed with me. Not because I am particularly interested in American politics, but on account of the serious rift between huge swathes of the American society, which the Christian religion, of which I am a part, as practiced by some, has occasioned.

I can’t print some of the vitriolic comments leveled as both Warnock and Walker, but the depth of the anger, presented on Twitter by people who claim to be Christians was appalling. The general drift, on one side, was that Republicans represent the high moral Christian ground and the Democrats are evil on account of their liberal views on hot button issues of same sex marriage, abortions. While on the other side, the accusation of hypocrite, writ large in the actions of some Republic Political leaders, and supported uncritically by largely white evangelicals, was a disgrace to the church.

Some of the more “ user friendly” comments are shared below:

No, Herschel Walker didn’t lose because he got outspent.

It wasn’t because ‘black panthers scared people’ away, it wasn’t the machines, and it wasn’t because the lines were too long.

He lost because he was a terrible candidate & Raphael Warnock was an exceptional one.

The end.

Great that Warnock won.

Sad and scary that it was so close against such an abusive, incompetent, unqualified, intellectually unfit, dead beat like Herschel Walker.

Saw CNN report on a poll showing 88% of white evangelical voters support Walker over Warnock. I’ve read reports Senator Warnock is an ordained minister and for over 16 years has served as the senior pastor of an Atlanta church. The 88% must be reading from a different book. 🤔

The New Black Panther Party will deploy armed guards at polling locations across Georgia during the runoff between Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., and GOP candidate Herschel Walker. bit.ly/3P7llpB

Just read over 88% of evangelicals support Walker. This reminds me why I left the church.

Such hypocrisy.

Will the true believers in WWJD please put these lost souls in their place by showing up, and #Vote RAPHAEL WARNOCK‼️

In the midst of this conundrum for many who might be confused on. the church’s position on this hot political issue, I wrote to my former school mates on a WhatsApp chat group that:

Sundi, this post calls for in depth and not a Twitter length response. But at the heart of it is the reality that Christianty is more than skin deep. More than being against hot button issues of same sex marriage and abortions. Christianity also most profoundly involves matters of Justice and service to the poor and marginalized and those forgotten by the society. The ” flotsam and jetsam of Capitalism” as one former Archbishop of Canterbury once observed. Yes, at its core Christianity is about the mighty salvation from Sin and death and evil by Jesus on the Cross. But then we are called and empowered by the Risen Christ to become like Him. Christlike! Not Republicans who generally have little regard for the Justice issues of the day or even of the ages whilst claiming the moral high ground on hot button issues. Not Democrats who in general, of late have jettisoned the moral precepts on which America was established by the Pilgrims, in favor of liberal approach to freedom as they see it and in pursuit of human rights as they understand it. So both of them ar at fault. But if I had to vote as a Christian , not for a part of righteous believers, as there is none, on account of a better track record on Justice issues – Martin Luther King Jnr never got any support from Republicans…not a lot from JFK either , but at least a listening ear until the Civil Rights Bill was pushed though by LBJ… I would ignore the appeal of, in general hypocritical Republicans in favor of a very tainted Democratic Party which would better fit the Biblical prayer “Forgive them Lord for they know not what they do”. Vs the Republicans who claim to know exactly they are about and yet sacrifice truth and the marginalized at the altar of power. Fanon’s “ The wretched of the earth” find no fair with Republicans, generally speaking. And in that context Jamaica is part of that wretched world. May God have mercy on us sinners all.

BIBLE

As we turn to the Word of God this week a better picture of what we are called to do in this “ corrupt generation “ emerges:

TUESDAY – JESUS KEEP ME NEAR THE CROSS AND SO ENABLE ME TO BE ON MY KING’S BUSINESS

The Collect

Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Sunday gone, I was privileged to lead the service and preach the sermon at St. Thomas’ Mission church in Majestic Gardens. Shared the received knowledge of the church on the different “ seasons” of  God’s activity in the world:

Creation

Fall

Redemption

Judgment

Andre the musician played a song for us at my request after the sermon. I am redeemed!  And as I began my devotions this morning with the reading for the third Sunday in Advent,  the Collect stayed with me a while…we are sorely hindered by our sins.

And so I was moved to listen again to I am Redeemed. But found no great joy this time as I did on Sunday. But the next song in the video above touched my soul. “Jesus Keep me near the Cross”. Love and mercy found me!

More so as last night, early this morning,  I was led to read these words from Paul:

“It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.”

Romans 9:16 NIV

“For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.”

Romans 11:32 NIV

And before I got up this was my “ song in the night”.

“When I see the blood I will pass over”

All three of these passages of Scripture would need proper context to fully understand what Paul was saying at that time, and now, but  this message is to be received in the context of what the writer of the Collect, one who like Paul knows  that only Jesus can rescue him “from this body of death”,    is crying out to God for. Mercy! In and through the precious Blood of the Lamb.  Mercy which is only available as long as we keep near to the cross. And then out of us will flow the promised streams of living water, the Holy Spirit, more and more as we live a Crucified Life. About which I have been sharing what A.W. Tozer wrote many years ago. A reflection of by him in my Classics Devotional Bible,  I found useful this morning:

TUESDAY ( MERCY!)

EMPTINESS BEFORE FULLNESS

Verse: Luke 11: 13

Before there can be any fullness, there must be emptiness. Before God can fill us with himself we must first be emptied of ourselves ( Rev. Kitson has been constantly reminding us of this truth in recent times). It is this emptying that brings the painful disappointment and despair of self of which so many have complained just prior to their new and radiant experience.

There must come a total of self-devaluation, a death to all things without us and within us, or there can never be real filling with the Holy Spirit. While I shy away from “ how to” formulas in spiritual things, I believe the answer for the question “ How can I be filled?”…may be answered in four words, all of them active verbs. There are these : (1) surrender ( Romans 12:1-2..which I was lead to read last night, (2) ask ( Luke 11:13), (3) obey (Acts 5:32), (4) believe ( Galatians 3:2).

Complete and ungrudging obedience to the will of God is absolutely indispensable to the reception of the Spirit’s anointing. As we wait before God we should reverently search the Scriptures and listen for the voice of gentle stillness to learn what our Heavenly Father expects of us. Then, trusting in his enabling we should obey to the best of our ability and understanding.

Comment: I believe with all my heart that such watchful waiting before God, and anointing by the Holy Spirit, can come only when we “ take up our cross, deny self and follow Jesus”. Which translates in this Redemption Era, and in this Advent time, to asking Jesus to keep us near the cross.

No wonder then the hymn writer was moved to declare :

Nothing in my hand I bring,

Simply to the cross I cling.

Naked come to Thee for dress.

Helpless, look to Thee for grace.

Foul! I to the fountain fly

Wash me, Savior,or I die

Peace and in obedience

LWJ

I pray to you O dear God, that you may renew your Church with a fresh anointing of your Holy Spirit as you keep us near the Cross of Jesus, as we carry around the death of Christ in our bodies so that the life of Christ may be revealed in and though us; Lord renew your Church so that we can all with faith and in truth and in obedience declare and live to the glory of God, and for the rescuing of souls and for the promotion of Justice and Righteousness :

I am a stranger here within a foreign land ;

My home is far away upon a golden strand;

Ambassador to be of realms beyond the sea,

I’m here on business for my King

WEDNESDAY

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Romans 8:28 NIV

I have been led back to a book I largely ignored as a young Christian.  Paul’s letter to the Church in Rome. Couldn’t understand it at all. But later on as I journeyed  with Christ, within it I found the foundations of my faith: While we were still sinners Christ died for us; all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God; the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus.

This morning as I sang blessed be the Lord God of Israel….for visiting and redeeming us with a might salvation, and struggling physically, this verse above presented itself. But with a reminder that such a promise is for those  “ who have been called according to his purpose”, in and through the crucified and risen Christ. Those who have accepted God’s unconditional love ( For God so loved the world…..). Which means that even though God’s love is unconditional, such love has to be appropriated, has to be accepted, by believing in the substitutionary, and sacrificial death of Christ.

But there is more! Listen to what Paul reminded the church at that time, and also in this and every age:

“Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.”

Romans 8:12-13 NIV

The essence of which reminder, is what Tozer and others, even Jesus himself, “ deny self take up your cross and follow me”, calls for.  We are  under obligation because of what Christ did for us on Calvary, to enter into the deeper life of Christ and live a crucified life ourselves. It’s a choice! Put to death the misdeeds of the body and live. Live according to the flesh and you will die. And be of no use in rescuing the nation from evil.

And there is still more:

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.””

Romans 8:14-15 NIV

Those who live by the Spirit of God cry Abba Father, and no longer live in fear. ( Do not fret it leads only to evil …says the Psalmist).

And finally and very importantly :

“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”

Romans 8:16-17 NIV

This as there is no sharing in the glory of Christ without suffering. No living the crucified life without suffering. And in fact, we know that the Bible assures us that “ God’s power ( in us…not his power in and by itself),  is made perfect in our weakness”.

It is only when we believe these things, and you have to trust God who primarily speaks to us through his Word ( formerly through the prophets but in this age through His Son….so be wary of anyone who in any way whatsoever casts any doubt on the sacredness of the Word of God), for we cannot please God if we don’t trust Him, that the Word we began with, will be an eternal unbreakable truth in our lives. All because of the Crucified and Risen Christ:

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Romans 8:28 NIV

I pray God that this message will strengthen you today in the midst of whatever trials you face. In the same way that our slave forebears trusted God, according to Martin Luther King Jnr.

HE WHO TURNS BLACKNESS INTO  DAWN

Verse: Amos. 5:8

Midnight is a very confusing hour when it is very difficult to be faithful. The most inspiring word which the church may speak,is that no midnight long remains……..

Our eternal message of hope is that the dawn will come ( all things work together for the good  of those who love God….could be inserted here).

(Our slave forbears) when they thought of the agonizing darkness of midnight, ……and encompassed by a staggering midnight but believing that morning would come, they sang:

I’m so glad trouble don’t last always.

Oh my Lord, O my Lord, what shall I do……..

Faith in the dawn arises from the faith that God is good and just. When one believes this, he knows that the contradictions of life are neither final nor ultimate. He can walk through the dark night with the radiant conviction that all things work together for good for those that love God ( Amazing isn’t it…did not know it was there…and nestled in the words of Amos in my Classics Devotional Bible, far removed from Romans, but the Lord organized it all….praise God). For even the most starless night may herald he dawn of dome great fulfillment.

Peace and in obedience as we contemplate the future of our country, the witness of our church and even  our pressing personal issues. That on account of our life in the Crucified Christ in the vessel we can smile at the storms of life and help others to come to know Christ the King. And be about His business in this troubled SOE’s nation.

LWJ

Merciful Lord grant those you have called in Christ Jesus,  the gift of faith in Him, so that in Him the church may be renewed and help to renew the nation(s)

THURSDAY – GOD HAVE MERCY ON ME A SINNER

THE WISDOM OF OSWALD CHAMBERS

DECEMBER 7

Repentance

Godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation…

2 CORINTHIANS 7:10

Conviction of sin is best described in the words:

My sins, my sins, my Savior,

How sad on Thee they fall.

Conviction of sin is one of the most uncommon things that ever happens to a person. It is the beginning of an understanding of God. Jesus Christ said that when the Holy Spirit came He would convict people of sin (see John 16:8). And when the Holy Spirit stirs a person’s conscience and brings him into the presence of God, it is not that person’s relationship with others that bothers him but his relationship with God— “Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in your sight…” (Psalm 51:4). The wonders of conviction of sin, forgiveness, and holiness are so interwoven that it is only the forgiven person who is truly holy. He proves he is forgiven by being the opposite of what he was previously, by the grace of God. Repentance always brings a person to the point of saying, “I have sinned.” The surest sign that God is at work in his life is when he says that and means it. Anything less is simply sorrow for having made foolish mistakes— a reflex action caused by self-disgust.

The entrance into the kingdom of God is through the sharp, sudden pains of repentance colliding with man’s respectable “goodness.” Then the Holy Spirit, who produces these struggles, begins the formation of the Son of God in the person’s life (see Galatians 4:19). This new life will reveal itself in conscious repentance followed by unconscious holiness, never the other way around. The foundation of Christianity is repentance.

Comments: Paul’s only desire, as highlighted by Oswald Chambers ( to whom I was introduced many, many years ago by one of my spiritutal mentors, and whose meditations “ My Utmost for His Highest”, I have been reading every night  for years, along with Chris Tiegen’s “ The Wonders of the Cross” ) and which desire ought to be the goal of all who are called to be teachers and preachers and evangelists and leaders in the church, the body of Christ, was this:

“ My dear children , for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you…….Galatians 4:19. Nothing more nothing less!  For whom I am in  pains of childbirth so that all to whom I am called to send messages may  truly live a crucified life. Why? So that theologically we may join the sinner and not make the mistake of the Pharisee:

“To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.””

Luke 18:9-14 NIV

This is exactly the point of the reflection by Chambers, if you think about it carefully and dare I say  in a global “ catholic “ manner. That unless through hardship and suffering and struggle “ I have decided to follow Jesus ….no turning back,no turning back…….the world behind me, the cross before me….no turning back, no turning back,  and by the conviction of sin in you by the Holy Spirit, the tinderbox that is the human heart, so easily lit by the fires of temptations, of different kinds, the worse of which is pride – dependence on self vs abandonment to to the mercy God – then there is no achieving of the crucified life.

I’ll say this carefully and respectfully, as led by the Spirit of love and not a  spirit of condemnation, and there is admittedly a thin line between the two, that if we as Anglicans examine ourselves carefully, at least at a certain level,  we will detect  a certain “ haughtiness “,  that we have a better understanding, a more secure doctrine of Christianity than some of the other denominations #Talkthetruth  That unlike some of them “ we don’t do concert”, ( and that captures a whole set of things) in our worship. I am temped to continue in this vein, and cure more examples,  but if I did, I would be on my own,  and which path would take me away from the tax collector and towards the Pharisee, spiritually.

I believe,  as I am led to share in this manner, that it is our attitude to sin,  we, generally,  are far too comfortable as a church with what God hates,  that has led us in this direction; the consequences of which,  is manifesting itself in our current predicament. Declining numbers in our congregations and in those who are inspired to become priests! I make no pronouncements about the spiritual state of other churches, whether directly or inferentially by my comments. Others in those churches will speak according to the will of God

So yes, absolutely,  there is a need for, in committee,  to consider the affairs of the church; most notably so at Synod. Yes, absolutely,  there is a crying need even now, for the church to be involved in good works – schools, outreach programs, feeding the poor. Yes, absolutely,  there will always be the need to bury the dead, perform marriage ceremonies,  visit the sick, and plan for worship services. But, I am going to say something, not because I thought of it, but because it came into my mind, and not by flesh and blood. When the flood came,  people were marrying also. And when the Son of man comes again, two will be in the field and one will be taken and the other will not. There is therefore  a dividing and defining line in history. There will be no sitting on the fence  and saying that I was a good Anglican. Or Baptist. or Pentecostal! Only if Christ was formed in us, and in Christ we witnessed to the love and mercy and power of the Living God.

In this respect,  only God can and will judge His people. Ultimately! Our role, we who are called to share the will of God, are only empowered to warn. First self, and then others. In the church first, and then in this “ corrupt generation”. To repent and believe the Gospel of Christ. The only remedy for “ Against you only have I sinned and have done evil in your sight”.

Then, and only then, when we are in truly in Christ,  according to the OT, Isaiah 35,  reading for Sunday will:

Strengthen the weak hands,
and make firm the feeble knees.

Say to those who are of a fearful heart,
“Be strong, do not fear!

Here is your God.
He will come with vengeance,

with terrible recompense.
He will come and save you.”

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;

then the lame shall leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy.

Jamaica and the world cannot be improved, as the plan of God is to make a new heaven and a new earth. But all who have sinned can be rescued and come to know the God of Jacob, who promises eternal life in Christ and him crucified. And through the faithful, the remnant even, the Church,  can, by preaching with power Christ ad him crucified,  open the eyes of the blind in this country and unstop the ears of the deaf. So that men and women engaged in crime and violence may turn and repent. Those who are responsible for bringing up children  to become terrorists at school and give teachers “ holy hell”, and cause them to wish to leave the classroom in droves, may repent and bring up their children in the fear of God.

Peace and in obedience.

LWJ

Lord we beseech thee in the name of Jesus Christ the crucified One,  to renew your church in and through a cry in the heart “ Lord have mercy on me a sinner”; Lord renew your church that the church may renew the nation(s) where people no longer fear God but have developed their own ‘salvation’ through good governance, an efficient market, technological advances and human rights pursuits.  But as Bob Marley sang, “they think they are in heaven but they living in hell”. This,  as one fine day the Son of Man shall come again to judge the living and the dead. Pray God that the church will not be found guilty of anyone’s blood for not having preached the whole will of God in Christ and him crucified.

FRIDAY – HAVE THINE OWNWAY LORD, HAVE THINE OWN WAY; THOU ART THE POTTER I AM THE CLAY

The Gospel

Matthew 3:1-12

In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said,

“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.’”

Now John wore clothing of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

“I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

Comment : The reading  above,  last week,  for the second Sunday in Advent, at Saint Andrew Anglican Parish Church, was not used in our church on account of our Patronal Festival. And so the story of Andrew and  his brother Peter’s encounter with Jesus, was chosen!  I recalled, having prepared myself for worship, having read the Gospel story, perhaps not for the first time, wondering about the end :

“I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

God is good, all the time, and so last night I received by grace, at least one version, there may be more and better particulars – as the lawyers are wont to say –  to come, of the explanation of this truth. “ but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire”.

THE CRUCIFIED LIFE

THE PURPOSE OF THE REFINER’S FIRE IN THE  CRUCIFIED LIFE – THE FINAL CHAPTER

If it be so, our God who we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

God has in His arsenal an infinite number of tools that He at His discretion employs to accomplish His perfect pupose in our lives. Of course, the prevailing question is, what is God’s purpose in our lives? The answer to that one question will open up a whole world of understanding concerning what God is doing in our circumstances.

Some have the idea that God’s purpose is to make our lives more tolerable here on earth. That rather cheapens what Christ did on the cross. If all He wanted to do was to make our lives tolerable, then He could have done it in a variety of other ways. God’s supreme purpose for us is to make us like His Son, Jesus Christ. If we understand that everything happening to us is to make us more Christlike, then it will solve a great deal of anxiety in our lives.

If on the other hand, we have the idea that God’s purpose is to make this life heaven on earth, then God has a lot of explaining to do. It is not happening. The way is rough, and the pathway is littered with all kinds of distractions and disturbances along the way.

Posted the next paragraph ( edited) on Facebook:

Throughout this book, I have referred to the cross as an instrument to accomplish God’s purpose, His ultimate purpose in our lives. I now want to refer to another tool that goes along with this; the Refiner’s Fire.  Let me point out the difference between these two. The cross deals with our self-life; to put the self on the cross and have it absolutely crucified. But  the Refiner’s Fire takes a different approach. The  purpose of the Refiner’s Fire is to burn away all the bondage imposed by the world.

When I talk about the world ……I am talking about the spirit ( the zeitgeist) of this world which is supervised by none other than the enemy of our soul, even Satan himself, which the Scriptures refer to as the “ prince of the power of the air ( Eph 2:2)………

To understand God and His nature is to understand that nothing impure ( and the words of the Psalmist come to mind as I write :

“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,”

Psalms 1:1 NIV) nothing from this world can stand before Him……some aspects of our lives are so resistant to God’s grace that it  necessitates fire to burn it completely out of our lives.

Comment: This passage of Scripture comes to mind:

“In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. “Make level paths for your feet,” so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.”

Hebrews 12:4-13 NIV

Finally we need to make the point that discipline and the Refiner’s Fire does not mean that the Blood of Jesus  is not sufficient for all our needs. Nor does it contradict the Scripture, again in Hebrews, that by the Blood of Jesus we can enter into the very presence of God and ask for grace and mercy in times of trouble. Absolutely not!

Rather it is part of the Word which implores us, once we are baptized to work out our salvation. Which is to become obedient to God and surrender ourselves to His leading and guidance. And as I am led to write these final words, into my mind comes this truth, and in this context, validation by the Holy Spirit,  from the hymn writer:

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!

Thou art the Potter, I am the clay.

Mold me and make me after Thy will,

While I am waiting, yielded and still.

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!

Search me and try me, Master, today!

Whiter than snow, Lord, wash me just now,

As in Thy presence humbly I bow.

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!

Wounded and weary, help me, I pray!

Power, all power, surely is Thine!

Touch me and heal me, Savior divine.

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!

Hold o’er my being absolute sway!

Fill with Thy Spirit till all shall see

Christ only, always, living in me.

And the video below confirms the sufficiency of our God. That He is more than enough. For me. And for you. Set free by “ His stripes”. Even Jesus the suffering Son of God.

Peace and in obedience

LWJ

Gracious Lord we pray you, that we who have been “ set free by the stripes and death of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”, will humbly yield to, surrender ourselves completely  and accept your discipline, so that we may be renewed daily and become more Christlike;  for the rescuing of this corrupt generation, of Scammers, and Murderers and Extortionists, for whom your Son died, and for your glory and honor O God. Mercy!

Japan vs Spain

This week, what grabbed my attention, again, was the greatest show on earth: World Cup Football in Qatar. What also struck me and millions of people across the globe was the unpredictability of these games. Minnows in the world football rankings were beating former World Cup champions. One of whom Germany, to the huge disappointment of its many fans, went home early before the knock out stage. And it is only a twist of fate that prevented Spain, another former champion from exiting early also; this after scoring the most goals in any one match so far and having far most completed passes than any other team. What’s going on at the World Cup many are asking? A few reports from the famous New York Times below adds some flavor to this remarkable Global event, as the ball is indeed “ round” and everyone has come to party and an almighty war is going on to see who will prevail as champions. Many ate touting Brazil or Argentina, but there yet be more surprises to come:

Belgium vs Croatia

NEW YORK TIMES

In a news conference Friday, Berhalter and midfielder Tyler Adams, the American captain, were full of praise for the Dutch, who finished third at the 2014 World Cup before failing to qualify for the 2018 tournament. (The Dutch and their coach, to no one’s surprise, tossed bouquets right back.)

But Adams nodded to some of the spectacular upsets in the group stage of this tournament — Japan’s wins over Germany and Spain, Tunisia’s defeat of France — as evidence that things do not always play out as they should on paper. Sometimes, the better team doesn’t win. Sometimes, it’s not even the better team.

“I think you can look at a lot of the games so far in this World Cup and use them as motivation,” Adams said. “A lot of teams that might be underdogs in these games have come out on top, and that just shows that in these games it comes down to the moments, how focused you can stay over 90 minutes.”

AL RAYYAN, Qatar — The 11 Japanese players on the field were fighting back every Spanish threat and counting every tick of the clock. The substitutes stood on the sideline, arms locked, ready to rush the field. The fans beat a drum, and it felt like a quickening heartbeat.

The whistle blew, and Japan had done it: It had upset another European soccer heavyweight, turned its four-team group inside out, and advanced to the round of 16.

And Spain, knowing the tiebreaker scenarios and tracking what was happening 30 miles away in a game between Germany and Costa Rica, breathed a collective sigh of relief. It, too, had advanced from Group E, even after a 2-1 defeat at Khalifa International Stadium.

Germany won its match but lost its hope. The Germans, the 2014 World Cup champions, were stunningly eliminated from the tournament before the round of 16 for the second time in a row. This time, Germany was undone by its own middling play over three games and the ruthless cruelty of group-stage math.

At halftime of Thursday’s Group E games, which were played simultaneously, it looked as if Germany and Spain were going to move on. Minutes later, it looked as if it would be Japan and Costa Rica, after each scored two quick goals to take second-half leads.

None of it was certain, though, until the games ended about 40 minutes later, and almost at the same time.

But Belgium — a team that rose to new heights, and spent several years atop the world rankings and finishing third in 2018 — will go home. Once expected to contend for a World Cup title during an era in which it was able to call upon some of the world’s best players at several positions — goalkeeper, midfielder, forward — Belgium instead never won a major international title, or even reached a final. Now, its stars are unlikely to play together again. Most of Belgium’s top players are in their early to mid-30s. This trip to Qatar was their final collective shot.

“A huge disappointment for us,” Belgium Coach Roberto Martínez said.

After the game, Romelu Lukaku, 29, Belgium’s career leading scorer, was moved to tears and consoled by teammates on the sidelines. Axel Witsel, 33, a midfielder, collapsed to the ground, as did the 33-year-old defender Toby Alderweireld. Kevin De Bruyne, 31, a midfielder widely considered one of the best players in the world, walked around saying his goodbyes.

Morocco, on the other hand, was filled with joy. With a 2-1 victory over Canada on Thursday, it won Group F. After a 2018 World Cup in which none of Africa’s five qualifiers advanced to the knockout stage, Morocco joined Senegal in the round of 16 in Qatar — with Ghana in position to join on Friday. Morocco also represented hope for a different region: It is the only Arab country remaining in the first World Cup held in the Middle East.

Morocco was the only team in the group to win twice, toppling Canada and upsetting Belgium, 2-0, a result that led to riots in Brussels. By winning the group, Morocco earned a date on Tuesday with Spain, which finished as the runner-up of Group E after losing to Japan. Croatia will take on Japan on Monday.

BIBLE

However when I turn to the Bible,I see another war going on; an almighty struggle by the archenemy of God, Satan, to destroy the souls of people made in the image and likeness of the God of all Creation. Thank God that Victory is assured in Christ Jesus. But how many know about this Victory, and further, accept the need for it, and finally are willing to accept the cost ( denial of self and faith in Christ and Christ alone) of this ( Christmas ) gift from God. It is in that context that i wrote to my church and by extension through this medium, to the world this week.

SATURDAY NIGHT – REVIVAL

Home alone, except you are in a movie, is no fun. But it has its benefits. Your mind is more focused on God. So ( continuing to ) reading Tozer tonight, “ The Crucified Life”, helped me to return to the original version of an long standing prayer. Here is the reason why!

THE REFRESHMENT OF A REVIVAL

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in me, no more change, except ye abide in me. ( And as I write this song by Helen Baylor come to mind https://youtu.be/yaWzDt5JOek ) John 15:4

Perhaps the greatest result of living the crucified life is that periodically it brings us to places of great spiritual victory. Throughout history, these periods have been referred to as revivals. Nothing is more needed right now in the contemporary Church than a revival.

A revival can occur on one of three levels. It can occur on a personal level, when an individual is revived. It can occur on a church level, when the whole church comes under a new spiritual impetus. It can happen on a community level when a church overflows and the spiritual impetus extends into the community.

A solitary person can enter into revival and have a revitalization of his ( her) spiritual life, a surge of power and an infilling of grace that causes him ( her) to enter into an experience so wonderful that words cannot describe it. Yet it would not affect the church that he ( she) happens to be attending. Within pretty cold churches, there have been greatly revived individuals, yet those churches did not experience revival because the churches opposed, neglected or considered these revived people fanatics or extremists and basically froze them out.

An individual church may experience an awakening, and such a revival impacts all the individuals in the congregation and might even increase the number of individuals attending the church. People are lifted up and refreshed, and out of the frozen streams the ice breaks and the water begins to flow. Yet it often fails to extend beyond the local church. Many local churches have awakenings and refreshing, but these revivals do not go beyond the church walls into the community.

Then there is such a thing as a community revival where the Word does go into the community, going from one church to another, from one neighborhood to another, until the whole city is revived.

A community revival can start with an individual, extend to the church and extend out to include the community, but it can never occur in the reverse order. It can never begin in the community, unless there has been a church that has been revived, and no churches have ever been revived until individuals in the church have been revived.

Comment: So we go back to the original prayer for the Decade of Evangelism for the Anglican Church many years ago as taught to us by the late and of blessed memory, Bishop Herman Spence.

Lord renew your church beginning with me; Lord renew your church that the church may renew the nation.

In obedience.

Peace.

MONDAY – MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE! THE REASON FOR CHRISTMAS; NOT SANTA CLAUS, BUT GOD HIMSELF COMES TO “ THE GHETTO” BECAUSE HE KNOWS OUR HEART

The Collect

Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Old Testament

Isaiah 11:1-10

A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch shall grow out of his roots.

The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him,
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

The simple message came to me, again this morning, as it did sometime yesterday as I came from Church and was meditating on “ Abide with me”. Viz., How Holy Communion allows us according to the Word of God to abide with Jesus.

“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.”

John 6:56 NIV

Came to me as I read the Collect, and if there any lingering doubt it was removed when I read the Old Testament Reading. What message? That the entire Bible can be understood in two verses:

Man shall not live by bread alone! In the fullness of time God sent his Son. The first we learn from the Old Testament, the other from the New Testament; although the promise comes first in the OT and is fulfilled in the NT.

I suppose if I were writing on my own I should now “ defend my thesis”. But since the message was received from the Lord I have no need to justify what I wrote. The Lord Himself will reveal more and better details to you. Suffice it to say however that the context in which I received it is just as important, and so we go back to Tozer and:

THE EVERLASTING REWARDS OF THE CRUCIFIED LIFE

How good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! Psalm 133:1

The worth of any journey can always be measured by the difficulties encountered along the way. The more difficult the journey,  the more satisfying the destination. I have been thinking of the crucified life as a journey. It has a beginning, of course but the end is never this side of glory. I am reminded of this thought in a hymn called “ The Kings Business”:

I am a stranger here within a foreign land;

My home is far away upon a golden strand;

Ambassador to be of realms beyond the sea,

I’m here on business for my King.

Tears almost came to my eyes as I read especially the last part. I’m here on business for my King. My King who abides in me and I in Him. Even as I write! Even as I opened up the house this morning. Even as I watered the flowers and did the most mundane things. I’m here on business for my King.

Tozer goes on! But that’s enough. I’ve been going to work too late in recent times. And that’s part of  my King’s business also.

For truly man shall not live on bread alone, satisfy his or her desires,   whether basic needs or in excess,  alone, for in the fullness of time God sent His Son, Christ my King, so that in Him Crucified and Risen, forgiven of our sins, and made a New Creation, we shall be about His business in this foreign land.

Until his Second Coming! To judge the Living and the dead.  Those who abide in Him, and those who did not heed the warnings of the Prophets, The Collect, that man shall not live on bread alone. Depend on his or her own strength. But rather follow the example of David, as Tozer highlighted in a continued reading  of the Chapter above,  as revealed in Psalm 57:

“Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.”

Psalms 57:1 NIV

The entire trajectory  of the Scriptures which culminates in the greatest and most triumphant Word in History, “ It is finished”, Tetelestai, has its starting point in this verse. In you I take refuge until Satan has been conquered. And Victory over Sin achieved.  Which is what Adam and Eve failed to do, but got adventurous,  and why “ In the fullness of Time” God who knew what man would do, before the creation of the world, “ sent His Son. At Christmas! To die, so that in Him, by grace and mercy and faith, we would find refuge, and be made a New Creation. And be about my King’s business in this land of SOE’s and #wrongaddresses “ lady where you come from people die there every day”, so stay where you are and don’t try to come and mix up with us in high society. In this land where extortion rules in every town, where corruption is rampant in high places and where “ the wretched of the earth”, literally like Dives, and metaphorically, seek bread at the gates of the rich and powerful in this “ trickle down economy “; a relic of injustice from the days of slavery which continues in more sophisticated forms today.  An economic model which has spawned the likes of Elon Musk et al, where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. In this land of gender confusion and upended instructions for “man and woman to be joined in Holy Matrimony” and become one flesh. In this land of  relaxed moral values, where a woman’s body count ( how many sexual partners)  shared on Twitter,   in a kind of blasé mode,  is said to be on average 9-12, and God alone knows about the body count of men, some of whom have fathered 18-20 children with few mothers with more than one.

In this land. And many abandon their children who then become fodder for gang leaders and contribute to the epidemic  of crime and violence.

All because man is determined to live by bread alone. And encouraged by the media and the savants of this world! Thank God then for Jesus. Thank God for Christmas. Thank God that in the fullness of time God sent His Son, my King, so that in Him, I can be about His business. And his business is to tell “ the vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus, a pardon receives”. And then O Jesus, a big party erupts in joy in heaven over one sinner who repents. We forget or dilute this business of my King, at our own peril, and the peril of the nations.

Peace, and in obedience, and about my King’s business.

LWJ

Lord we thank you for Christmas, and pray that you may renew your Church with a reminder of this special Gift of  Christ and Him Crucified, born in a manger and crucified on a Cross, for the sins of the world. And we pray for renewal Lord that your church may help to renew, and rescue  the nation(s) where people, led by Satan,  are very satisfied in living by bread alone. And have no idea that disaster looms.

TUESDAY – JOY TO THE WORLD! GOD AND SINNERS RECONCILED IN JESUS CHRIST AND HIM CRUCIFIED AND RISEN

It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”
― C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory, and Other Addresses

Old Testament

Old Testament

Isaiah 11:1-10

A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch shall grow out of his roots.

The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him,
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
or decide by what his ears hear;

but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;

he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist,
and faithfulness the belt around his loins.

I remember it until this very day. And it happened many, many years ago!  I came upon this passage of Scripture!

“The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.””

Genesis 6:5-7 NIV

I was mortified. Horrified even! And went  to my spiritual mentor the late Bishop Herman and spoke to him, and my soul regained some measure of calm. Not even sure what he said to me, but some time later,  the end of the verse gave me some hope:

“But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.”

Genesis 6:8 NIV

The point here is that we cannot begin to understand the love of God for sinful mankind, “ Adam’s helpless race “, until we come to terms with our own sinfulness: “ a wretch like me”.  I recall a very disturbing conversation with a late Bishop, who shall remain nameless, who claimed that “ he was no wretch “. Whatever that means! But whatever he meant, I was not happy that he had that view of himself.

It is in that context then that I received the good news of the “ Branch that will come out of the stump of Jesse”.  That out of utterly sinful mankind, my King will emerge , my King will be sent for my salvation, and for the salvation of the entire world. God and sinners reconciled indeed! Joy to the world indeed.

I don’t know if C. S. Lewis’ characterization of us sinful creatures as “ half-hearted,and fooling around with sex, and drink and ambition” fully captures the extent of man’s wickedness and sinfulness before a Holy God, ( all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God..is more complete ), but to imagine that this God would so love us “ while were still sinners”,  and even the vilest offender, is beyond human comprehension. Passeth all human understanding indeed. Why then should I not love this God? How then can I not love Him!

“Not because I hope for heaven thereby, nor yet because who love thee not are lost eternally,” as the hymn writer tells us. But :

“ Thou, O my Jesus, thou didst me upon the cross embrace; for me didst bear the nails and spears, and manifold disgrace……”

If we don’t understand this view of ourselves, if this is not what is being preached, thundered forth even, from the pulpit, then the church has failed us. And will hear from the Lord one day, one fine day:

“Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.”

Revelation 2:4-5 NIV

But God himself will preserve a remnant who will be faithful to the branch of Jesse. The One who died on Calvary for our sins and was raised with power for our justification and to give us new and everlasting life, and will come again in glory, to judge those who have been about His business and those who have not.

Peace and in obedience on a day when the main discussion is about SOE’s or not, Enhanced Security Measures or not, and who will win the World Cup, and not on  what will happen when Christ the King comes again. Not for Christmas but for Judgement!

May Christ the King renew His church beginning with me, and all who love Him because He suffered and died for us on Calvary; may He renew His Church so that the Church may renew the nation(s) not just to protect their human rights, but to Atone for their many many sins.

THURSDAY – GO YOUR WAY DANIEL AND WAIT WITH PRAYER AND IN FAITH IN THE SOON COMING CHRIST. AN ADVENT MESSAGE

At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered. Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.

” Then I, Daniel, looked, and there before me stood two others, one on this bank of the river and one on the opposite bank. One of them said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, “How long will it be before these astonishing things are fulfilled?” The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him swear by him who lives forever, saying, “It will be for a time, times and half a time. When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.” I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, “My Lord, what will the outcome of all this be?” He replied, “Go your way, Daniel, because the words are rolled up and sealed until the time of the end. Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.”

Daniel 12:1-10 NIV

Two important things I have learnt, or more accurately, have been taught, have benefited me much in my journey with Christ. One more important than the other. The first is pretty mundane in a sense,  but a great lesson to learn: do not worship God by rote, doing today, because that’s what you did yesterday, and the day before. For the God we serve is making “ all things new each day”.  The second one is of existential  importance: “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.”

2 Corinthians 1:20 NIV

And so this morning I was led away from Jacob Boheme’s prayers and The Benedictus “ Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he hath visited and redeemed his people; and hath raised up a mighty salvation for us; in the house of his servant David”, to the passage from Daniel above.

Comment:  This revelation comes at this time when we are, as a nation, deeply divided, at least politically divided,  over the use of SOE’s to fight crime, and what is the best crime fighting tool or tools. Divided over what is the best approach to reduce the regularly over 1000 murders per year despite our best efforts, or worse, some would say, so far. Deeply divided in America over same sex marriage and abortions, and approach to governance. Deeply divided in the UK about immigration and by extension, in a sense Brexit. A state of mind of some Britons, one side of the divide exposed, for all to see,  in the forced resignation of a senior member of the royal household, and Prince William’s god mother,  last evening. Institutional racism!  The very adhesive label attached to the sorry affair. And this revelation comes at time when a global event is taking place and some treat the results as if their very lives depended on it.

Comes at time when we in the western world, are about to celebrate Christmas. Again! But first according to the church’s Liturgical Calendar, and quite rightly so, in the creation story, comes Advent. A time of preparation for the Second Coming of Christ. A reality however largely ignored by the world. And even at their peril, some Christians.

This as the final end of mankind, despite the excitement of what we can do with a smart phone, or accomplish by our our own wisdom  and knowledge, or indulge in with, gay abandon and  great joy and happiness,  or how we can rule over others by consensus or by fiat and with power, is “ everlasting life ( with Jesus, the soon coming King and Judge),  or shame and everlasting contempt ( without Jesus and him Crucified and Risen). According to the Word of God revealed to and through Daniel!  That’s it. Nothing more nothing less. And all the king’s horses and all the king’s men, all like the King, famously without clothes and any power before a Holy God, cannot change one word of this prophecy.

Finally as we contemplate the instruction given to Daniel and to us, in this age, “go your way”, as  when this will happen is not in our gift, not even in the gift of the Son but only the Father knows, a mediation from one of the great saints and preachers of old, Charles Spurgeon, is a priceless gift: #betterthanabigdeal #betterthanamacysgiftcard

THURSDAY ( REMARKABLE ISN’T IT)

BLESSED IS  ONE WHO WAITS

CHARLES SPURGEON

VERSE: Daniel 12:6

It may seem an easy thing to wait, but it is one of the postures which a Christian soldier does not learn without years of teaching. Marching and quick-marching are much easier to God’s warriors than standing still.

There are hours of perplexity when the most willing spirit,  anxiously desirous to serving the Lord, knows not what part to take ( How do we rid Jamaica of crime and violence,  and so many ill mannered people,  and corruption and immorality). Then what shall we do? Vex itself by despair? Fly back in cowardice, turn to the right hand in fear, or rush forward in presumption? No, only simply wait. (  Go your  way Daniel).

Wait in prayer, however. Call on God, and spread out the case before him ( like Solomon did after building the temple); tell him your  difficulty and plead his promise of aid. In dilemmas between one duty and another, it is sweet to be humble as a child and wait with simplicity of soul on the Lord. It is sure to be well with us whenever feel and know our own folly, and are heartily willing to be guided by the will of God.

But wait in faith. Express your unstaggering confidence in him, for unfaithful, untrusting waiting is but an insult to the Lord. Believe that if he keeps you tarrying even until midnight, yet he will come at the right time; the vision will come and will not tarry.

Peace and in obedience.

Lord I believe, help thou mine unbelief!  Lord renew your church we beseech thee,  by the remnant you have anointed to trust in you with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding, even in  this hour of wickedness in our land, and in the USA, and the uttermost parts of the world; Lord renew your church with the sure knowledge  and hope in the Crucified, Risen and soon coming Christ, so that your church may renew the nation(s) where people are in imminent danger ( fire dey a muss muss tail and ‘im tink a cool breeze…imminent destruction is at hand and the unredeemed have no idea of what they face as the images on the TV and smart phones grab their attention) of shame and everlasting contempt

FRIDAY – SIN IS THE ROOT AND #Topless AND CRIME AND VIOLENCE ARE THE BRANCHES. AND ONLY THE BLOOD OF JESUS CAN SEET US FREE FROM THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL. AL OTHER SOLUTIONS AE USELESS ARGUMENTS

“This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”

Romans 3:22-24 NIV

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 6:23 NIV

This morning I awoke with all kinds of thoughts in my mind. But thanks be to God,  Blessed be the Lord of Israel ….was right there also. Thanks be to God for the “mighty salvation” in Christ Jesus. And as I began my devotions thinking, and giving thanks for another day, especially for a good night’s sleep, a blessing – went to bed and next thing I knew it was daylight –  the verse(s), we all combine the two together very often, came to mind. That by the mighty salvation wrought by Christ we don’t have to experience the wages of sin. And that’s the primary reason for the church’s existence on earth; to spread abroad the good news of the gospel of Christ. That of first priority Christ came to rescue us from the wages of Sin. And then the old movie Fidler on The Roof, came to mind. Remember the man who declared “  if I were a rich man…I would build a big tall house…with an extra room for show :

https://youtu.be/yE0YCJ3r-Bo    ( a trailer )……and into my mind came the thought that if I could sing, I’d go on the top of the roof, and not fiddle, but sing of the mercy of God to me a sinner: Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, all day long.

All kinds of thoughts as yesterday I was emotionally and spiritually traumatized. Long story cut short:

Had an extended conversation in the heart of the ghetto with a young man who is big in the music business. A “ Selector”! One who decides which songs to be played at a dance,or a party or a celebration. We discussed the effects of the music “ whap whap and chop chop” the song about the modus operandi of the infamous Jamaican Scammers, on the minds of the people and how to pull back a nation from the abyss of uncontrolled crime and violence. And how the music,  played in the dancehall space,  heavily influences the minds of the “ massives”.  Told me right up front that there is no hope. And as we continued to speak,  he offered up this revelation in response to my view that the power of music is unparalleled in leading people astray in this country, and how it plays out itself on our roads and in the community. And the revelation was #Topless. How because of the power of money, young women agree to dance topless in dances organized by bars, not inside, but outside bar within a certain space. And which kind of “ dirty dancing”  attracts all kinds of clientele so that lots of money is made as people buy liquor and enjoy themselves. Even  to the point of having sex with these women right there in public.

One of the more profound thoughts offered up by  my favorite theologian, the late Rev. John Stott, is that “ when a society goes bad, it is not the fault of the society, the unredeemed, but the fault of the church whose members are supposed to be salt and light in a dark world.”  Which thoughts are entirely Biblical if we recall that Jesus himself pronounced judgement on “ salt which goes bad”.

All of these thoughts in my head, the spiritual abyss into which we have fallen as a nation, and that crime and violence is only one manifestation of a deeper problem called Sin,  and John Stott’s revelation, led me to recall what I read from  Tozer last night:

A. W. TOZER

THE CRUCIFIED LIFE

CHAPTER 16:  SPIRITUAL GUIDES FOR THE JOURNEY ( OF A CRUCIFIED LIFE…..THE ONLY WAY ONE CAN TRULY BECOME SALT IN AN UNREDEEMED WORLD…..MY WORDS)

And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding. Jeremiah 3:15

The way of the crucified life can be precarious, making a spiritual guide all but indispensable. But it is important to have a guide who understands the way sufficiently and can give clear instructions on how to live the crucified life.

The church has no shortage of people who have advice to give. There is, however, a shortage of spiritual guides with the wisdom  needed to navigate such precarious living. The question to be considered is, how do you recognize a true spiritual guide?

( Let me contextualize the answer Tozer gave to his own question, an issue of immense importance in this age with so many churches, generally,  and in our church, specifically,  so few men and women willing to offer up themselves for ministry,  and the power of evil in my country, and in the USA, where my children and grandchildren live,  by referencing a parting prophecy by Paul:

““Now I know that none of you among whom I have gone about preaching the kingdom will ever see me again. Therefore, I declare to you today that I am innocent of the blood of any of you. For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God. Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.”

Acts 20:25-31 NIV)

Tozer continues ….. It is crucial that we watch out for false guides. For every true guide there are a multitude of false ones. The use of false guides is a popular strategy of the enemy to destroy the work of God in a person’s life. Some guides are obviously false and easily recognized as such because their  teachings are completely off-the-wall. What I am concerned about however, are those false guides who are close to the truth.

One of the first things that should catch our attention about a potential guide is his use of Scripture. The most dangerous spiritual guide is the person who is 95 percent true to the Scriptures. Remember, it is not the truth that hurts you; rather it is the evil. The 95 percent truth is trumped by the 5 percent evil. This our archenemy knows only too well.

The true spiritual guide embraces all of the Scriptures, while the false guide will avoid certain passages of Scripture. ( I was once in Kansas in the USA visiting with a dear cousin who has since gone to glory. We dutifully attended an Episcopalian church the Sunday, and I heard with my own ears, and have never forgotten it until this very day, the preacher saying “ this passage of Scripture, the gospel reading for day, was too difficult” …perhaps in his mind not good news……and so  he opted for another one).

Unfortunately, the problem today is that many Christians are not well versed in the teachings of Scripture.

Comment: Tozer continued to “ call out “ false prophets”.  And if it is Gods willI I  will continue to share. The point,  however, is that although thank God for the most part, we at Saint Andrew Parish Church have been blessed with excellent spiritual guides, that is not the reality in some churches. And we’d better be on the look out for when one comes along. For the stakes  are extremely high for our people caught up with #Topless and other evils. And we who have been “ called, redeemed, empowered and anointed” by the Living God,  are the salt God has sent into this maelstrom of evil to “ set the captive free”. We fail to be salt and light at our own peril,  and at the peril of the souls of our brothers and sisters  made in the image and likeness of God, but as Advent reminds us, faced with imminent judgement.

Peace and in obedience

Good and gracious Lord, we pray you to renew your church with the help of dedicated and obedient spiritual guides sent by you; Lord we beseech you to renew your church that the church may become who we are, salt and light sent to rescue people in nation(s) faced with the certain judgement because of the wages of Sin. Mercy Lord. Mercy!
