As I considered what reading my “newspapers” this week, revealed what men were doing, vs reading my Bible to see what men ought to do, these two profoundly different, yet related, quotes came to mind:

The first one. “You can’t handle the truth “. From the movie ‘ A Few Good Men’. And no! You are not going to find it on Netflix, or Amazon Prime or Hulu. Way before their time. The second one. “ Then you will know the truth and the truth shall set you free”. John 8:32 – The Holy Bible.

So what did I read, hear or listen to, that triggered these thoughts. First the George Wright affair! The member of Parliament in Jamaica, who it is alleged was caught on an a very incriminating video, hading out a very savage beating to a woman. A matter that, on the one hand, has sparked howls of condemnation from women in particular, and their advocacy groups, and all well thinking Jamaicans. While, on the other hand, some were urging caution, as the link between the video and the legislator, had not not been established, ‘beyond a shadow of doubt’. This coming at a time when the society has been rocked by several cases of intimate partner violence resulting in severe injury and death. So what is the truth?

Government Senator Golding Campbell
Opposition Senator Scott Mottley

Should the truth, as some see it, including popular talk show host Emily Shields, citing ‘reasonable’ if not ‘inescapable’, conclusions from the facts, so far, available, in the public domain, trigger his resignation and or expulsion from his party and the parliament. Or does such a ‘truth’ represent, a premature ‘judgment’, at best, and only an attempt to score political points, at worse? A difference of opinion which triggered a heated debate, in the Upper House yesterday. And what really is truth could very well either, shame or even, condemn young and upcoming female politicians as playing political games with a serious national issue while purporting to show empathy with suffering women in the society; or cause, on the other hand, shame to heaped on the heads of more experienced ones who may be judged as being anxious to use any opportunity, without having all the facts available, to secure an advantage for a party struggling to be ‘relevant’ in these times.

https://jamaica-gleaner.com/article/lead-stories/20210424/senate-clash-over-beating-video

Michael Sharpe

Second, an even more serious issue. Is the vaccine being used by the government of Jamaica, and governments all over the world, both safe and effective? Did the much loved and much acclaimed journalist, Michael Sharpe die because he got the vaccine? I can’t believe I am even repeating this nonsense, but unfortunately, it’s a question which is the ‘inescapable’ and uncomfortable for some, truth for far too many Jamaicans. To the extent where, as we have all heard, the nurse who administered the shot – might be news for those outside Jamaica – and other nurse too, have had threats issued against them.

https://www.loopjamaica.com/content/traumatised-death-threats-against-nurse-who-vaccinated-michael-sharpe

One of the many challenges that we face as a modern society driven by ever improving technology, is, to misquote a popular song in the 1970, the reality that, in this age, “ everybody is a star”. Not just ‘every nigger’! ( Can I still use that word?).

Every man and woman who has access to the internet and can do their ‘own research’, is now an ‘expert witness’. We see it playing out in medicine, where patients now google symptoms and look for solutions. Before they consult with their doctor! And even when they do decide to consult, if the diagnosis is not in keeping with what Doctor Google – who did not go to med school and who had to consult with doctors – told them, we have a hard time convincing them to take the meds. Mostly the younger ones, but even the older ones – not taking any cholesterol tabs – have become infected by the ‘virus’. And the real ‘truth ‘ about the vaccine has many layers. Why am I to take the vaccine if it does not prevent me from ‘getting the virus”? Why should I, ‘a child of God’ – no virus can trouble my body – take the vaccine. Plus I have many ‘underlying illnesses, that taking the vaccine may, will, aggravate! And the ‘affecting my DNA’, non truth!

God he knows, that we need the “ truth “ to be told about this vaccine. Truth that will set this nation free from the devastating – over 750 deaths and rising – effects, including the worse economic fall out in modern history, leaving many jobless and out of funds, in its wake. And countless struggling to breathe and to deal with other long term effects of having been exposed to the virus.

So as we go to what the Bible teaches what men ought to do, right away, comes the age old question. Or questions! Did Jesus really rise from the dead? Who saw him? What’s the evidence? Is the Bible the Word of God, or the word of Man ( with the implication …and therefore you can’t trust it). Doesn’t the Bible need to change to reflect a more ‘modern reality’? Shouldn’t our understanding evolve as society evolve?

And so the Lord led me to write to my church this week and to post revelations, as they came to me, on Facebook.

FIRST EMAIL

Woke up with the Benedictus in my heart. And recall being led to read the Psalm last week:

“It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name, O Most High, proclaiming your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp.”

Psalms 92:1-3 NIV

Therefore, we as redeemed children of God, should always have a song in our hearts. And make music to the Most High. To His praise and glory!

All of us can recall with ease, thanks be to God for parents and Sunday School teachers and others, Psalm 23 appointed for this Sunday. But in addition we should try and place in our hearts the Benedictus – the song of Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. The one who was called, and so too are we, to “ go before the face of our Lord to prepare his ways”. A wonderful song about the history of salvation, the joy of salvation, “ and we being delivered out of the hands of our enemies: might serve him without fear:…….”.; and the our calling as Christians, lest we forget: “ to give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death”.

PSALM 23

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”

Psalm 23:1-6 KJV

THE BENEDICTUS – MORNING PRAYER

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel: for he hath visited and redeemed his people;

And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us: in the house of his servant David;

As he speaks by the mouthy of his holy Prophets: which have been since the world began;

That we should be saved from our enemies: and from all the hands that hate us;

To perform the mercy promised to out forefathers: and to remember his holy Covenant;

To perform the oath which he swore to our forefather Abraham: that he would give us;

That we being delivered out of the hands of our enemies: might serve him without fear;

In holiness and righteousness before him: all the days of our life.

And thou, child, shall be called the Prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,

To give knowledge of salvation unto his people: for the remission of their sins.

Through the tender mercy of our God: whereby the day-spring from on high has visited us;

To give light to then that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Gory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be: world without end. Amen.

Peace,

In obedience.

LWJ

Blessed God as we sing with joy in our hearts to you the Most High, we pray you to renew the church with your Spirit; we pray that as you renew the church the church may renew the nation(s) where songs giving glory to gods – of pleasure and of power and greed and lust and violence – who cannot save not hear, are the root cause of so much evil in our land today. Mercy!

The Collect

O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people: Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

I was just being obedient, reading the Collect, the collective prayer, for the worldwide Anglican Church for Sunday when this happened. I was led to the video above by “ follow wherever he leads”. A song which I had not encountered for years, came into my heart and soul, and led to a most amazing video about following Jesus. Because we love Him!

Then I read the reading from the Acts of The Apostles, a Word which high led the reason why we follow Jesus:

There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.”

Acts 4:5-12

The rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. When they had made the prisoners stand in their midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, if we are questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who was sick and are asked how this man has been healed, let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. This Jesus is

`the stone that was rejected by you, the builders;

it has become the cornerstone.’

There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.”

THIRD EMAIL

Some of my friends on Facebook are not Christians. And so sometimes I am led to share what I am taught by the Holy Spirit on that platform. This week the following thoughts, in sequence, were posted.; and then this morning as I woke up, came the conclusion:

“Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning who would betray him. He went on to say, “ this is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him”. John 6:64-65. #devotions1

Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you, but if I go I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment. John 16:7-8 #devotions2

The two passages of Scripture go together. And so we pray that the Holy Spirit will convict those who we argue with, and who refuse to see the Light, as only God can enable people, by the Power of the Holy Spirit, to come to believe in Jesus. #devotions3

“ Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

1 Corinthians 6:18-20 NIV #4

#devotions 5 on the way to work with the radio off, means that, we have to prepare our bodies to be the temple of the Holy Spirit, who God in his wisdom ordained to live in the church – the body of Christ. And convict people of Sin!

This morning:

So The Holy Spirit does not work on His own in the world to convict people of Sin, but in and through the body of Christ – the church. That is why Jesus said I will send you another Counselor. The Paraclete! And why some theologians refer to Jesus as the first Counselor. If you think about it, as the Spirit revealed this morning, that’s exactly why Jesus did not go around on his own, but called unto himself, in the first instance, 12 disciples; one of whom betrayed him. This, because our Lord was preparing them to be his ‘hands and feet’, and in whom He would, ultimately reside, as Holy Spirit, when he ascended back to his Father; and now our Father – who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name.

The story, the revelation, goes back even further. As, God, beginning with Abraham, chose to reveal himself, progressively, to a sin-sick Adam-ized world, in and through the Chosen People, the Jews. But they failed to become holy, as he was holy -the intention of God. Therefore in the fullness of time, God sent his Son. And in the fullness of time, God in Christ, sent the Holy Spirit. So that in Him who resides in us, who surrender our lives to Christ, completely, for God is a ‘ jealous God’ and will brook no competition in our hearts, our bodies become the temple of the Holy Spirit. And whoever we meet, and wherever we go, He is there working though us – and you child shall go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways – like John the Baptist – “To give knowledge of salvation unto his people: for the remission of their sins.

Through the tender mercy of our God: whereby the day-spring from on high has visited us;

To give light to then that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: and to guide our feet into the way of peace.” – The Benedictus.

All of this foretold in the Old Testament:

“At the end of seven days the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.

When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.

But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn from their wickedness or from their evil ways, they will die for their sin; but you will have saved yourself.

“Again, when a righteous person turns from their righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block before them, they will die. Since you did not warn them, they will die for their sin. The righteous things that person did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. But if you do warn the righteous person not to sin and they do not sin, they will surely live because they took warning, and you will have saved yourself.””

Ezekiel 3:16-21 NIV

Conclusions: There since we have been “ bought with a price”, we need to honor God with out body. And mind and heart and soul! As the Church in this age, in this dispensation, in this always, since Adam, ‘corrupt generation’, is called to be the Watchman for the nation(s). And the better news, than in the OT, the Good News, is that we have the Power to do so, as the Holy Spirit, the Promise of God Himself in Christ Jesus, and God cannot lie, lives in us, and will enable to carry out the work that he came to do:

“But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.””

John 16:7-15 NIV

The question therefore arises, in fact several questions: have we received the Holy Spirit; have we so ordered our lives, have we so denied self, that the Holy Spirit is comfortable living in us; is the world through us, being “proved wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment ( or are we guilty of crafting a more palatable gospel, a more liberal interpretation of what the Holy Spirit revealed to the Apostles and through them to us); are we receiving now in this age “ more than we can bear now”, and being “ guided into all truth”? And therefore worthy of being called “ The Watchman” for a nation mired in Sin! Or will we be judged as ‘salt which has lost its taste’? And “salvation will come from another’. Judgment!

Peace, and in obedience.

LWJ

Lord renew thy church beginning with those who have denied self, have become “ crucified in Christ and no longer live”, and in whom your promised Holy Spirit lives; Lord renew the church with your Spirit so that the church may renew the nation(s) where institutional racism is alive and well, and where “ black people die there every day at the hands of the Police”. Not every day literally Lord, as that quote is from Etana’s wrong address, but Lord you know what I mean. Too often! And where the Gleaner headlines this morning heralds the awfulness of Sin:

https://jamaica-gleaner.com/article/lead-stories/20210422/i-am-living-slave

And the manifestation of a serious national issue. Intimate partner violence, going on and on, long after intimacy has died and has been buried! Or captured on video dear Lord, and debated in the parliament. O Jesus have mercy!

READING MY NEWSPAPERS

“I read my newspapers to see what men are doing”. Everywhere! Not just Jamaica. Because one of the features of a human being is an insatiable curiosity for what’s happening, “what’s going down”, with other human beings all over the globe. And the “newspapers”, in the form of YouTube, and Google and Twitter, competing, very successfully, for ratings with traditional media – Television, Print and Radio, allows one to consume news globally, “in a minute.”

TWO WRIGHTS AND TWO WRONGS : ONE A VICTIM THE OTHER A PERPETRATOR

So this week, I, like so many others, had our attention removed from one Wright #talkthetruth, in Jamaica, to another Wright in the USA. From one egregious wrong to another even more so. With fatal consequences! From the incongruity of a law maker caught on video – which has led to an investigation internally in the party and by the police #Gleanerheadlines today- beating a woman, shortly after the Parliament, influenced by public outrage, denounced, in no uncertain terms such a practice, to yet another Police killing an unarmed black man in the USA. Young Daunte Wright! Thus provoking outrage on the streets of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

And BBC, one of my ‘newspapers’, provided this chilling context:

A few years ago, high school mentor Jonathan Mason was asked by a young black pupil what he should do if he was ever pulled over by police.

“If they pull you over, make sure your hands are on the top of the steering wheel, don’t reach for anything,” Mr Mason, speaking to the Associated Press, recalls telling the teenager.

The boy, already jaded from seeing multiple cases of police brutality on the news, replied: “Man, why we gotta do all that just for people not to kill us?”

This week that boy – Daunte Wright – was shot and killed by a police officer in Brooklyn Center, a suburb of Minneapolis in Minnesota. He was 20 years old.

The killing of Mr Wright during a traffic stop on Sunday has happened at the same time another police officer, Derek Chauvin, is on trial for murder over the killing of George Floyd last year.

THE MORE THINGS CHANGE……

And then, a few days, more of the same. Again!

Hundreds marched through the streets of Chicago on Friday to protest the police shooting of Adam Toledo, a day after the city released a graphic video of a police officer shooting and killing the 13-year-old Latino boy in an alley two weeks ago.

Demonstrators chanted “Hands up, don’t shoot!” and “No justice, no peace!” while hoisting signs with messages such as “Justice for Adam Toledo” and “Stop Racist Police Terror!” in a march that remained peaceful as night fell.

The demonstrators observed a moment of silence and expressed solidarity with the boy’s relatives, who had implored protesters to remain peaceful. The rally began in Logan Square Park, about five miles (8 km) north of where the shooting occurred.

Comment: For many years this song has ‘haunted my soul”. And I plan to highlight it one day. A song which came to mind as I watched the events unfold revealed by the body cam video which has sparked this protest.

https://youtu.be/UuXqcynZZYg

Almost brings tears to your eyes. Don’t! And no doubt Barack Obama who hails from Chicago, and who had an opportunity to make a difference, and create more positive headlines, but for one reason or another – definitely not a #wasteman as labeled, but not adhesively, by #chronixx – was unable to do. He too, I am sure , cries silently also at this time. And when you import that experience to Jamaica and superimpose it on Majestic Gardens and Tivoli and Jungle and Tel Aviv, we get a better understanding of why we need not only to be curious about others, in the human race, but burn with a desire to help.

CHURCH AND STATE AND CORONA AND VACCINE HESITANCY

This week also, I was privileged to attend a meeting of Church Leaders, held virtually at Kings House, and led by the Constitutional Head of the land, Governor General Sir. Patrick Allen. To discuss national issue – providing leadership in a time of a grave national crisis. A group which was addressed by, Jamaica’s and one of the leading experts on the Corona Virus Pandemic in the world, Professor Peter Figueroa. Many issues emerged, and were discussed and no doubt a statement will be issued shortly. But what was of particular interest to me, and I sincerely hope that the expert witness of Dr. Figueroa went a far way in clearing this up, is the reality of “vaccine hesitancy”.

Which in my experience as a Family Physician who is a Christian, is that this serious issue of #vaccinehesitancy is ‘alive and well’ in minds of many church people. To my utter amazement! As I am at a loss to understand what theological construct, what understanding of the Almighty God, in whom Christians place their trust, has led to this bizarre rejection of the gift of a vaccine. This by the God who gives, we who are scientists, the wisdom, and the tools, to enable us to save lives – which ultimately is why the very same vaccine hesitant people come to the doctor, and take injections all the time, and meds, for various illnesses. As they trust the doctor! So what has changed in this instance why they have suddenly decided that “ God will protect them from Corona”. And yet when, unfortunately, breast cancer arrives, or a severe burn, they, very willingly, proceed to trust the doctor, to treat them successfully. Which God allows. Sometimes!

READING MY BIBLE

Which then brings us to reading the Bible to see what men ought to do. Help! That’s the central message of the Bible. And which is what #GoodFriday and #Easter and the Church of God of prophecy theme, which I heard one morning on my way to church, announces, “ Restoring Pentecostal Power to Serve”. For Salvation, and its multiple layers, a gift from a God who we can trust, though a persona matter, is at the same time a matter for the whole human race. “ For God so loved the world……….”

First:

AN EMAIL TO MY CHURCH

There is much to unpack in the Psalm appointed for this week, and shared below, as directed in my early morning devotions today. But before this a Word from my lunch time devotions at work yesterday, “ spoke to me in silence on my my bed this morning”, as it did yesterday:

“Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.”

Genesis 21:1-2 NIV

The Response

Psalm 4

Cum invocarem

1 Answer me when I call, O God, defender of my cause; *

you set me free when I am hard-pressed;

have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

2 “You mortals, how long will you dishonor my glory; *

how long will you worship dumb idols

and run after false gods?”

3 Know that the Lord does wonders for the faithful; *

when I call upon the Lord, he will hear me.

4 Tremble, then, and do not sin; *

speak to your heart in silence upon your bed.

5 Offer the appointed sacrifices *

and put your trust in the Lord.

6 Many are saying, “Oh, that we might see better times!” *

Lift up the light of your countenance upon us, O Lord.

7 You have put gladness in my heart, *

more than when grain and wine and oil increase.

8 I lie down in peace; at once I fall asleep; *

for only you, Lord, make me dwell in safety.

So as we consider this Word from the Lord for us as individual and collectively as church, let us always place in the forefront of or minds and activities that God is a faithful God,cannot lie, and will deliver what He has promised:

“He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”

Psalms 91:4 NIV

1 Answer me when I call, O God, defender of my cause; *

you set me free when I am hard-pressed;

have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

Comment: The relationship that God has ordained between Himself and man, his creation, is that we should always call upon him; that we are created to be in an intimate relationship with out Creator. That’s our reason for being -raison d’être. Nor for self, not for family, not for “ king and country”! Those are secondary, and gifts from the Creator and not cause the Creator to be dethroned from our souls. And which folly is ultimately the cause of ‘so much trouble in the land’.

For God alone is the ‘defender of my cause’, and who alone can ‘set the captives free’, and has done so, completely ( He is all my righteousness, I stand complete in him and worship Him…Christ the Lord) in and though Christ Jesus and Him Crucified, Risen and Ascended.

So for all who are ‘hard pressed’ and cry out to God for mercy in prayer, in the precious Name of Jesus, he will answer. Always! Never, ever doubt the promises of God, that he will fulfill, in the same way he treated Abraham and Sarah. Regardless of what is happening around us ; what the world is saying. “ He saved others, let him save himself” – the mocking sounds on Good Friday, before the glorious Easter.

2 “You mortals, how long will you dishonor my glory; *

how long will you worship dumb idols

and run after false gods?”

Comment: Yes, this is certainly a rebuke, addressed to mortals, “who art dust and to dust ye shall return”! But is that the promise of God for those “who believe that Jesus came from God “! Who believe that God sent his only begotten Son ( They call him Jesus…..)! No, a thousand times no. But that we may not perish but have everlasting ( eternal life in Christ Jesus ). And we can hear the Handel’s majestic masterpiece…..And He shall reign ….King of Kings….and Lord of Lords, forever, and ever, Hallelujah, Hallelujah !

https://youtu.be/IUZEtVbJT5c

So we who have called out to the Lord in our distress, “ against you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight”…Psalm 51, we who at one time were guilty of ‘ dishonoring the glory of the Lord, and of worshiping dumb idols, and running after false gods”, have now being rescued from the ‘wages of sin”, and given the “gift of God”, who is Christ Jesus.

We cannot therefore go back there and dishonor the glory of the Lord all over again. So let us ‘count ourselves dead to sin” as God’s ‘ new creation in Christ Jesus ‘, the baptized. And then try and rescue our people who are under this rebuke, and not cause ourselves to suffer also under this chastisement.

6 Many are saying, “Oh, that we might see better times!” *

Comment: What does this statement, this observation, this comment from the Living God, mean in this Corona time. These child abusing times. These intimate partner violence times. These times of wickedness when human life is not worth anything better than the life of a cockroach; to be destroyed without mercy. Better like “ going back to where Jamaica has been for the last 20- 30 years”! Going back in the same direction where America, primarily and the wisdom of this age, “ running after false gods”, has led the world. Is that where “ grace and mercy’ is leading us? To be condemned all over again! “ And Jesus came to them and said “ peace be with you”. The better times then, always in this “ corrupt generation”, since Adam, is the “ presence of Jesus”. In the midst of the storm. In the midst of the despair in the ‘demon possessed valley’, as he is in the “ breaking of bread “ on a Sunday morning. That’s why, the only reason why, “ I can face tomorrow “. The God of “ new futures”, according to Bishop Howard’s examination of the Scriptures: Easter after Good Friday.

7 You have put gladness in my heart, *

more than when grain and wine and oil increase.

8 I lie down in peace; at once I fall asleep; *

for only you, Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Comment: I close with the ‘song in my heart ‘ early this morning. And which promise will always enable us to be ‘glad in our hearts”, and to be able ‘lie down in peace’, regardless of the circumstances.

“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.”

John 15:7 KJV

And no one sings it any better than this:

https://youtu.be/yaWzDt5JOek

A Word which is coupled with another Word about Holy Communion:

“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.”

John 6:54-56 NIV

The question is therefore not if God is faithful, not if God can deliver, but what are we asking for. For whom and for what circumstance are we praying in faith. To the God who says “ Call out to me and I show you great and wonderful things of which ye know not”. We need to ‘enlarge our tent’, as Isaiah instructed, as led by the Spirit of God, and begin to pray for this nation and the entire world, in a way that pleases the God who so “ loved the world”. Not just us, our family, our circle, our church, our denomination and our country. The ‘defender of our cause”! Let our cause be broad and wide, and our hearts trust in a God who is faithful.

Peace, and in obedience.

Lord we pray thee to renew thy church beginning with those who trust in you a faithful God; Lord renew the church that the church may renew the nation(s) wherever “ mortals dishonor your glory, and run after false and dumb gods”.

https://youtu.be/PKRmv0u9IX8

The video above, which came to mind as I wrote ‘dishonor your name’, places this conversation in very sharp context in this country. A country where we have largely exchanged the “ Living God” for false and dumb gods. Even in the church! And so the land mourns.

“On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ who is the image of God. For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 2. Cor. 4:2b -5 NIV

Trouble don’t set like rain! And by now everybody ought to realize that, one of the lessons of the #COVIDPandemic, as with the case with the horrendous crash yesterday, that so far, has claimed five lives, and sent many, some critically ill to the hospital, is that we have no idea what is going to happen, in the next five minutes, much less this year. Or next year!

And so the Psalmist continues, with advice for the ages:

Luke 24:36b-48

Jesus himself stood among the disciples and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

“ It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp”. Psalm 92:1-3

I read my newspapers (listened to the radio, and watched the News on Television) to see what men, and women, were doing this week, and was horrified. How on God’s good earth could a mother facilitate, the most decent word I can find, the penetration of her own girl child’s genitals, by her boyfriend? How, in the name of God, could a grown man, become so depraved that he would, think in the first instance, and then proceed to act on his sexual fantasies, and place his ‘member’ on a girl baby’s genitals, and find pleasure in such a horrific act? Why would the killers of Natalie Dawkins, the ‘missing teacher’, whose body, it is reported, was found in a shallow grace, after virtually the entire island, in one way or another ‘searched’ for her’, why did they have to take her life? Why!

I listened to the DPP, Director of Public Prosecutions, Paula Lewellyn, who seemed determined to ‘educate’ journalists Cliff Hughes and Tyrone Reid on Nationwide News this week. Seasoned journalists who became increasingly uncomfortable with the reports of cases she had at her fingertips, about the gross indecency of the behavior of family and close friends who had sexually assaulted our nation’s children. A Public Health Emergency, she labeled it. And to be treated with the same kind of national attention given to Human Trafficking!

What If – Dancehall Version

As I write and ponder on the wickedness that has been unleashed on our children, in Jamaica, and no doubt across the world, where in some case pedophilia is more organized, the video above, “ What if” put out by the Broadcasting Commission in Jamaica ( in attempt to protect minors from being exploited) came to mind. In the sense that, the question being posed in the video, “ what if it were your sister’s nude body in video”, and answered by the message being sent, “ don’t watch them, don’t circulate them”, in the context of the kind of evil is being done, by mothers and grandfathers and fathers, to their own children, reflects a call to exercise a level of morality, totally at variance, and out of sync completely with the reality shared on Nationwide this week.

What then is to be done, is the million dollar question that the outrage on social media and in gatherings across the nation, is ultimately trying to determine. The truth is however, we have been down this road before. We have seen and heard things which make grown men and women weep for our country. The nation has delivered of itself calls for action ‘right now’. On numerous occasions! But things seems to just get worse.

Before I share what I read about in the Bible about what men ought to do, let me say this. Last night, and not by chance, as I was looking for another movie, tried repeatedly to find it, but failed, I watched a movie on how The Roman Emperor Constantine came to Power in Rome. And more importantly the story of how one of the more famous, and perhaps controversial, lines in the history of Christianity was birthed : hoc signo vinces” (Classical Latin: [ɪn hoːk ˈsɪŋnoː ˈwɪŋkeːs], Ecclesiastical Latin: [in ok ˈsiɲo ˈvintʃes]) is a Latin phrase conventionally translated into English as “In this sign thou shalt conquer”.

And among other things that stayed with me, about which we all know, or should, is how Christians were persecuted by the Roman Emperors before Constantine ; put to the sword and fed to the Lions. But in all of this they died without denying Christ, as their hope was that suffering for Christ in this way, would serve to ‘advance the kingdom of God’.

Then I recall during my lunchtime devotions at work yesterday, reading these words :

“Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe. They preached the gospel in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” they said.”

Acts 14:19-22 NIV

https://www.bible.com/111/act.14.19-22.niv

The challenge I believe for the church in this context of ‘suffering’, and ‘going through many hardships’ to enter into the kingdom, here on earth as it is in heaven, and therefore to be the ‘will of God’ in this hyper-sexualized, depraved, porn addicted and wicked generation, is to recapture the commitment that the early church had. And which it appears, the acceptance of suffering for Christ, being weak that in Christ we may be strong, has fallen into disrepute, if not subject to open rejection, by the contemporary church. For clearly if we, as church, are going to “ conquer evil through the cross’, what Christ said then, still holds good now. “ Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me”. “ Those who wish to hold on to their lives in this world will lose it”.

All of this means that if we are to be of any help in the rescuing of this nation from evil we must ponder deeply on what does it mean to be a Christian in any age. What is the purpose of our existence here as children of the Almighty and ever Living and Compassionate God, the God of Love and Mercy and of Judgment as shown on Calvary? As ultimately we are not only called to be teachers and mothers and fathers and factory workers and journalists and nurses and administrators, but disciples of Christ in a #NatalieDawkins age. And then how can we help to restore to a nation its soul. I believe we need to go back to basics, and not rush to ‘ do our own thing’, and even while we are contemplating how best to make a difference, and examine the basics of our faith once again.

It is in this context then, that I read my Bible to see what men ought to do, and what men ought to know, and wrote these messages to my church.

FIRST MESSAGE

BORN AGAIN!

Rule over me this day, O God, leading me on the path of righteousness. Put your Word in my mind and your truth in my heart, that this day I neither think nor feel anything except that which is good and honest ….

An extract from one of three morning prayers by Jacob Boehme accompanied me this morning as I was led to write abut my experience with the Lord tis early morning.

A story which began in the book of Ezra, about “ building the temple”. Then by the Spirit I recalled Jesus speaking about “ destroying the temple in three days”, which led to Matthew 26:61:

“The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’ ””

Matthew 26:59-61 NIV

Don’t pass over too lightly the fact that this declaration by Jesus was the ‘evidence’ which finally led to Jesus’ ‘conviction’. Aided by his comments in the next couple of verses:

“Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” “You have said so,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” “He is worthy of death,” they answered.”

Matthew 26:62-66 NIV

A story which continued in John 2:19:

“The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” But the temple he had spoken of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken. Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name. But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.”

John 2:18-25 NIV

The following thoughts then came to mind.

⁃ ‘the temple he spoke about was his body’, is a reminder for us, in the Corona Virus lockdown nation, and indeed the world, that the church is the body of Christ. And that our bodies, and we are going there soon, are the temple of God. It does not mean that we should long like the children of Israel did “ to go up to the house of the Lord”. But it is a reminded that the church is alive and well wherever we are, for that where Jesus rules; in every circumstance that an obedient child of God finds him or herself.

⁃ ‘ after he had been raised from the dead..the disciples believed’, is a profound lesson, and we will go there soon also, that unless we too share in the death of Christ, and arise to a ‘ new creation’, we will never believe in that Jesus Christ is Lord.

⁃ ‘ many people saw the signs …..and believed in his name”, followed by a curious and yet profound revelation that ‘ Jesus would not entrust himself to them’. And immediately we will recall that he had good reason not to be ‘excited’ about people responding to him because of the miracles that he performed, as it was these same people who shouted “ crucify him”, a short while after this.

A puzzle which is answered as we continue with John to the famous chapter 3, which has more than one very important teaching moment:

“Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.

John 3:1-3 NIV

To be ‘born again ‘ is not familiar language in our church. But it is Biblical truth, that is more often associated with the Pentecostal church. For the truth is that, in reference to ‘ many people saw the signs …and believed’, only when we are ‘born again’ in Christ and him crucified that we will truly believe in Him. And enter the kingdom of God! And we will get there in full soon.

But first another truth in John 3:

““How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.””

John 3:9-15 NIV

Therefore “ heavenly things” , heavenly truth ( tautology ?) is that belief in Jesus and the gift of eternal life comes only when we believe in Christ and him crucified. An eternal truth that as disciples of Christ we need to declare and live every minute of the day in word and in deed. An important point vs believing in Christ only because he performed miracles – just a first step easily overturned if we do not proceed to be ‘born again’. For the demons believed and trembled too!

The story then went to 1 Cor. 6

“Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 NIV

Paul must have had good reason to be caution and use the word ‘some’ and not ‘all’. But the lesson here is that ‘all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God’. But thank God for the Crucified One we have hope!

But that’s the prelude for the real story about the temple :

“By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit. Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

1 Corinthians 6:14-20 NIV

Not much needs to said here except “ you were bought at a price”. Viz., the blood of Jesus the Crucified One. Mercy Lord. Mercy! Mercy, mercy, mercy, on us O God who have trampled so great a sacrifice under our feet by our actions. Mercy!

The story continues, and ends, in Romans 6 ( I have a old NIV which has A Concordance at the back …so either the Spirit refreshes my mind with a Word, or use of the Concordance leads me from one verse to another)

“What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 6:1-23 NIV

A story which :

⁃ explains baptism like no other passage of Scripture, and which theme we explored during Lent.

⁃ Highlights the need for us ‘die to self in Christ’, and be ‘raised to a new ( and unending) life in Christ, viz., ‘to be born again’, as the temple of the Holy Spirit.

⁃ Finally after a long discussion about ‘count yourselves dead to sin’, the passage ends with perhaps the second most popular and well non verse in the Bible: “ For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus”.

Truth that we ought to recommend to our fellow Jamaicans, and perhaps, even we also of the body of Christ, in whom Christ lives by the power of the Holy Spirit, if we are obedient, that “ the wages of Corona might be death”, and therefore we ought to fear catching it, and accept the gift of the vaccine. But far worse, eternal separation from our Creator The Almighty God, is the wages of Sin.

But thank God for Jesus, the gift, the free and unmerited Gift of God is the Crucified One of Nazareth. He who ‘bought us with a price’ and lives in us, His Temple, the obedient ones, who “ count ourselves dead to sin”, by the power of the Holy Spirit. So that we can do ‘good works’ and ‘set the captives free’ from all kinds of wickedness and unrighteousness and Injustice, that plague our land; #Khanice and the repeated sexual abuse of the eight year old girl, and the abusers allegedly shielded by her grandfather, and the dead cop’s mother, who mourns. And so much more, as ‘ the land mourns’ for a lack of vision of the gift of the Crucified One.

In obedience

Peace.

O God, mighty God, Father of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ the Crucified One, we beseech you to renew your church by the belief that he who was lifted on Calvary lives in and though us, His temple; Lord God Almighty, God of Jacob, renew your church that the Church the body of the Crucified and Resurrected and Ascended One, may renew the nation(s) where people ‘ sit in darkness and in the shadow of death”. O Jesus have mercy! #benedictus.

SECOND EMAIL

OLD TESTAMENT WISDOM FOR NEW TESTAMENT PEOPLE

No context, although context is always present. But instructed to send this message, sent to members of the wider church and others on Facebook just now. Instructions came during my prayers, “Lord renew thy church”, to send to my church. At this time!

“Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!”

2 Kings 5:13 NIV There is power, power, wonder working power in the precious Blood of the Lamb. #EarlyMorningDevotions. From #Easter back to #GoodFriday Not only healing of #Disease. #Leprosy then; #Corona now, but #ForgivenessofSin in any age

““If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses? If you stumble in safe country, how will you manage in the thickets by the Jordan?”

Jeremiah 12:5 NIV #Warning from the OT #EarlyMorningDevotions ….woke up and this Scripture came into my head. Do not continue to test the Lord’s patience. One day He will act. But the Lord takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that they turn and repent and he will forgive them. #GoodFriday. #WashAndBeCleansed #TheBloodOfJesus.

There is another message. Not posted on Facebook, but a reminder just came:

“Then Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God. He stood before him and said, “Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your servant.” The prophet answered, “As surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing.” And even though Naaman urged him, he refused.”

2 Kings 5:15-16 NIV

The “ gift of God” in Christ Jesus is free. Unmerited and cannot be paid for. Obedience to the Living Word, the only mediator between God and man, is the only response necessary. The same One who said “ (so that) the Scriptures must be fulfilled”.

THIRD EMAIL

BE CAREFUL OF ‘NEW TEACHING’

As I read the Collect for next Sunday for the worldwide Anglican Church, this morning in my early morning devotions, just now, the need for “ rebirth” stayed with me. But when I read the Psalm, one of everybody’s all time favorite, and mine too, the matter of unity struck a chord in my heart. And then, by the Spirit, the famous passage in Ephesians came to mind. The entire chapter places a focus on unity, but the passage below offers a reason why. Especially in today’s context, of “ every wind of teaching’, that does not elevate Christ and Him Crucified and the Word of God, to the highest place in our hearts. Unity which leads to the building up of the entire church, in love, as each part does its work – wherever the Lord sends us, and whatever gifts He anoints us with. For “ He is all our righteousness, and we stand complete in Him and worship Him. Jesus Christ our Lord. Let us then forget about ourselves and concentrate on Him and worship Him, Christ the Lord”. A song in my heart as I woke this morning!

Response

Psalm 133

Ecce, quam bonum!

1 Oh, how good and pleasant it is, *

when brethren live together in unity!

2 It is like fine oil upon the head *

that runs down upon the beard,

3 Upon the beard of Aaron, *

and runs down upon the collar of his robe.

4 It is like the dew of Hermon *

that falls upon the hills of Zion.

5 For there the Lord has ordained the blessing: *

life for evermore.

“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”

Ephesians 4:11-16 NIV

This week, I read my newspapers to see what men are doing; and found that women are ‘up in arms’ about the recent surge in gender based, and intimate partner violence #KhaniceJackson that rocked the nation this week. And men also, along with the women! At least so it would appear from the outrage expressed in the mass media, social media and even in an unusual move, the Parliament devoted a whole session to allow the legislators to express their thoughts on the matter. Then almost as if the devil is taunting the nation with Bob Marley’s iconic song “ you a go tired fi see mi face…cant get me out a de race”, murder and murder most foul reared its ugly head in nation again. On Good Friday!

https://www.loopjamaica.com/content/woman-hacked-death-st-thomas-suspect-takes-his-own-life

All of this triggering one of the (main) church groups to issue a statement condemning the gender based violence and calling for the mobilization of its members, and the entire country to find ways and means to counteract this growing trend attacks against women and children in the society

http://www.loopjamaica.com/content/ja-council-churches-hits-out-violence-against-females-locally

This week also I was privileged to be a panelist, who were allowed to speak for four minutes and then face some “ probers”, in a TownHall meeting organized by the major religious station in Jamaica, Love FM and TV and YouTube. The topic – Vaccination ( against Covid -19): For and Against. I must admit, it took some convincing for me to agree, and no doubt the work of the Holy Spirit, as I was in no mood to enter into any discussions with anyone who entertained, and promoted, conspiracy stories about such a vitally important aspect of the nation’s campaign against this terrible Virus. But in the end I am glad that I consented, as I was exposed to the most alarming, if not shocking display of misinformation about the vaccine(s) and how it works, and how some members of the religious community had no clue. And worse, built on this misinformation, a theological argument, which presumably has been passed on to their members, which no doubt has contributed not only to vaccine hesitancy, but to settled opposition. Amazing! For example – the AstroZeneca vaccine, the one available in Jamaica, so far, does not use the mRNA technology that Pfizer and Moderna employ. A dead or attenuated virus which mimics the presence of the Covid-19 virus is used. Further, the mRNA does not interfere with our DNA – which is in the nucleus of the cell, an area unaffected by the vaccine. And having “ given the instructions” to make a product which simulates the presence of the Virus, thus triggering an immune response, which allows the body to fight off the Corona Virus when attacked, such instructions are discarded by the cell. Permanently! I was also happy for the support for the science and the facts given by Carol Narcisse who heads up the Jamaica Civil Society Umbrella Group, and Custos Pitkin, a fellow panelist and a theologian who gave his support for the vaccine.

Clearly the vaccines have side effects, like any other vaccines which have been successfully used to treat major life threatening illness including the dreaded smallpox. And we need to be aware and follow the scientific data carefully. But misinformation is another and very dangerous matter. Especially coming from, and residing in, “ a new creation”, where the Holy Spirit reveals all truth. Including science! A worrying sign which has other implications apart from the matter under review at the Townhall.

But thank God for Jesus, I read my Bible to see what men ought to do, and #GoodFriday brought good news. Especially that on the Cross of Calvary, Sin and Death and Evil were conquered. Permanently!. But in respect of evil, there is a caution which I posted on Twitter:

TWITTER

To borrow Jesus’ own metaphor, now that the strong man has been disarmed and bound #GoodFriday21 the time is ripe for us to raid his palace and plunder his goods ( Rescue other #Jhanice and #Jasmine by the #church…my words). It is not so simple as that, however – John Stott

For though the devil has been defeated, he has not yet conceded defeat ( ? #Trump). Although he has been overthrown, he has not yet been eliminated. In fact he continues to wield great power – John Stott

This is the reason for the tension between our theology and our experience…On the one hand we are assured that having been born of God, Christ keeps us safe ‘ and the evil one cannot touch us – John Stott

..on the other we are warned to watch out because the same evil one ‘prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to destroy. Many Christians choose one or the other of these positions, or oscillate unsteadily between them – #JohnStott

The tension is part of the Christian dilemma between the ‘already’ and the ‘not yet’. Already the new age( the age to come) has come and so we have ‘tasted…the powers of the coming age’; not yet has the old age completely passed away. #JohnStott

Some are triumphalist, who see only the decisive victory of Jesus and overlook the apostolic warning against the powers of darkness. Others are defeatists, and see only the fearsome malice of the devil and overlook the victory over him which Christ has already won #JohnStott

That is why theology, to be able to correctly handle the Word of truth, is important, and more, of existential value. For without a proper understanding of how God works in us by the power of the Holy Spirit we will not only be misinformed, but will lead others astray and not be “ salt nor light” in a “ corrupt generation” where the lives and bodies of #Jhanice and #Jasmine are so easily “ disposed of”.

Perhaps the most important question for believers and for non-believers alike, is the one associated with a picture – I have been granted special permission on account of “ Sunday Camera” – I took and posted on facebook with a ‘commentary’ on Good Friday.

A Picture worthy of a #StandAlone on #GoodFriday21 at #SaintAndrewParishChurch this morning. #WereYouThere when they crucified my Lord. Yes we were all there as Christ died for the whole world. So that we may be forgiven and not condemned.

Another picture also poses the same question:

This week also, I sent two emails. One to a group of church leaders, and lay members of the church, most of whom are friends. The other to my church.

THE FIRST EMAIL

The Gospel

John 13:21-32

At supper with his friends, Jesus was troubled in spirit, and declared, “Very truly, I tell you, one of you will betray me.”

And all of you will abandon me!

“Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping . “ Simon,” he said to Peter, “ are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you do not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” Mark 14:37-38 NIV

The gospel reading for Holy Wednesday is intriguing. Especially when juxtaposed with another scene when because “ The Scriptures must be fulfilled”, all of his disciples fled and left him. But he was not alone as his Heavenly Father was with him.

Question is, not so much, have we betrayed the Crucified One, although that issue may be at play in some of the things we do, but certainly , have we abandoned the Lord, is a legitimate question to ask of oneself. In the same way that in the Book of Revelations Jesus posed the question, in fact not a question but an declaration if not an accusation, that “ you have forsaken your first love ….Repent!”

The key point here is that “ the flesh is weak”. We cannot depend on our own strength and resolve to follow Jesus. “ I just want to follow Jesus……he’s my dearest friend”. Which is the lesson Peter, had to learn, before he was reinstated by the Risen Lord before he Ascended to his Father and our Father. Simon Son of John do you truly love me more than these? Can we truly answer like Peter, “ yes Lord, you know that I love you”.

We can only feel that pain and then joy of being with the Lord again if we have admitted that we have failed him. Again and again! That we have not loved Him with our whole heart! That we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. That we have not loved ourselves as we ought!

That we have not loved those who are dying from the Corona Virus, as we ought. That we have not loved those women and children who have been murdered and butchered and savaged as we ought. That we we have not loved those who suffer in body mind and spirit. That we have not interceded day and night, much less for one hour, for those who suffer in this country from all kinds of evil. That we have been so easily tempted and satisfied by the the beguiling things of this world …tempted to touch, tempted to listen…tempted to believe…..tempted to acquire…tempted to be unforgiving …tempted to condemn…tempted to be arrogant and lacking in humility.

O God have mercy on us. And forgive us during this Holy Week as we consider how much you suffered and died, so that we might live by the Spirit and not by the weak and corruptible flesh. Pray God that we may never forget and forsake this “ mighty salvation” from the house of your servant David. That we never abandon and betray this ever-faithful, ever-loving ever-forgiving God.

Lord renew thy church with those who have a repentant heart; Lord renew thy church that the church may renew the nation(s) who cry out for Justice, day and night, in faith, and not only in the Parliament, for murdered women and children, at this time; and Justice for murdered black men in America, at this time.

THE SECOND

As I am led to write tonight “ on the night before Jesus died”, on Holy Thursday, the main reason for this message is to underscore the power of the Holy Spirit; and to pose the question of whether as church, as believers, we have placed as much focus on His work, as much as we talk about the Son and the Father. The other part of the Triune God!

So where do we start. At 4:am last night! And the reading of the prophet Jeremiah, which included a story about “ A Linen Belt”. A story which ends with the fateful words: “ But they have not listened”. Jeremiah 13:1-11 NIV. Short explanation to a very long story : The ruined Linen Belt is a metaphor for how God declared that he would ruin the “ pride of Judah and Jerusalem “. Because they would not listen!

But that’s not the start. That’s the end of the first part of the story which began with Creation.

For God, having made “ heaven and earth and the sea and all that is in it”, declared it to be good. In fact very good! Then came the Fall in the Garden of Eden. And we all know that sorry tale very well. How Satan deceived Adam and Eve, and caused them to disobey God, and “ want to be come like God, knowing good and evil”, the essence of Sin. How God then “ banished them from the Garden of Eden, because Sin had entered into the human race, and marred the “ Imago Dei; the image of God and likeness of God in mankind”.

The whole story abut humanity from then until Jesus came to Redeem mankind, is the story of how God revealed Himself to mankind through the children of Abraham. And promised Abraham that “ all people on the earth will be blessed through you”. A promise kept, as with all the promises that God made “ are Yes in Christ Jesus, and the we say the Amen”. 2 Cor. 1: 20. So the Bible, about the two Covenants, is in essence, the revelation of God and a Redemption story.

This issue then of “ they would not listen”, accounted for the many trials and punishments and even exiles and a “ brief abandonment” by the God of Jacob. For these people became a “ stiff necked people”, continually running after other gods, when the God of Abraham, explicitly commanded them to “ have no other god but me”.

So essentially they could not help themselves. Could not stop themselves from sinning. This after having been “ born in sin and shaped in iniquity”, and therefore, destined to “ to dust you shall return”. A theological understanding of life and its many twists and turns, and the fundamental reason why this nation is now outraged about Jhanice Jackson’s murder. And helpless to prevent the others which we know will happen in the future, and have happened already!

Thank God for Jesus, that before the creation of the world, and in the fullness of time, God purposed in his heart, to send his Son, to Redeem mankind from Sin and Death and Evil – the wages of Sin, unto everlasting life – the gift of God in Christ Jesus. A gift which was offered to the whole world, “ For God so loved the world……” on Good Friday. And announced with Power on Easter Sunday!

So back to 4:am this morning. Why then did the Lord choose to reveal though his Spirit in me, this passage about” they would not listen”? And promised to “ ruin the pride of Judah and Jerusalem”. As they had become as useless and the hidden and ruined Linen Cloth.

This is where I believe the issue of “ giving glory to the Holy Spirit” comes in. For, this Holy Spirit, a promise of another “ comforter”, given by Jesus, and which promises are far more binding than the “laws of the Medes and the Persians” and the revealer of all truth, is Who is at work in this dispensation. And not the wisdom and courage and faithfulness, in and by themselves, of men and women of God, throughout the ages, who God has used to change the world, establish His kingdom, and “ chase out darkness”, in this corrupt generation.

For example, I take you back to a story I was led to share many years ago. About John Wesley:

“History is replete with stories how individual and collectively Christians have fulfilled this mandate to be salt and light in a decaying society. And of course, it all began on the Cross when the seemingly disgraced and defeated Christ exulted “ It is finished “. The victory over sin and death and evil!

So exhibit A, the story of how a nation regained its soul, is as good as any to cite in defense of John Stott’s proposition based on the Word of God.

Part 1: Christians in a non-Christian society

1. Involvement; Is it our concern ?

It is exceedingly strange that any followers of Jesus Christ should ever have needed to ask whether social involvement was their concern, and that controversy should have blown up over the relationship between evangelism and social responsibility. For it is evident that in his public ministry Jesus both “ went about ….teaching …..and preaching” ( Matthew 4:23; 9:35. RSV). In consequence, ‘ evangelism and social concern have been intimately related to one another throughout the history of the church…..

Historians have attributed to John Wesley’s influence rather than any other the fact that Britain was spared the horrors of a bloody revolution like France’s.

The change which came over Britain during this is well documented in J. Wesley Bready’s remarkable book , England before and after Wesley, subtitled The Evangelical Revival and Social Reform. His research forced him to conclude that “ the true nursing-mother of of the spirit and character values that have created and sustained the Free Institutions throughout the English-speaking world”, indeed “ the moral watershed of Anglo-Saxon history”, was “

the much -neglected and oft-lampooned Evangelical Revival”.

Bready describes “ the deep savagery of much of the 18th century, which was characterized by “ the wanton torture of animals for sport, the bestial drunkenness of the population, the inhuman traffic in African negroes, the kidnapping of fellow countrymen for exportation and sale as slaves, the mortality of the parish children, the universal gambling obsession, the savagery of the prison system and penal code, the welter of immorality, the prostitution of the theatre, the growing prevalence of lawlessness, superstition and lewdness; the political bribery and corruption, the ecclesiastical arrogance and truculence, the shallow pretentious of Deism, the insincerity and debasement rampant in Church and State – such manifestations suggest that the British were then perhaps as deeply degraded and debauched as any people in Christendom.

But then things began to change. And in the 19th century the slave trade was abolished, the prison system was humanized, conditions in factory and mine were improved, education became available to the poor, trade unions began, etc., etc.

“ When , then, this pronounced humanity? – this passion for social justice, and sensitivity to human wrongs ? There is but one answer commensurate with stubborn historical truth. It derived from a new social conscience. And if that social conscience, admittedly was the offspring of more than one progenitor, it nonetheless was mothered and nurtured by the Evangelical Revival of viral, practical Christianity – a revival which illumined the central postulates of the New Testament ethic, which made real the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of men, and which directed heart, soul and mind, towards the establishment of the Kingdom of Righteousness on earth.

The Evangelical Revival “ did more to transfigure the moral character of the general populace , than any other movement British history can record”. For Wesley was both a preacher of the gospel and a prophet of social righteousness. He was “ the amen who restored to a nation its soul’.

Comment : Wow! If anyone can not locate the headlines in the Gleaner today, then we are blind.

http://jamaica-gleaner.com/article/news/20191213/church-leader-charged-seven-counts-rape-hanover

If anyone can not locate the corruption in politics, the trafficking of human beings, the lewdness of some of the dancehall lyrics, the “ big up your ….. self”, the behavior of the taximen and the coaster drivers, the fascination of and dependence on, Lotto, to “ bruk outta brukness”, and other current social ills, then we have no discernment. The point is that the situation we face in Jamaica is “ nothing new under the sun”, and what God has done elsewhere, He can do for us, right here in Jamaica, under the gun, under corruption, under immorality and under loss of hope. But only in and through Christ and Him Crucified.

In this context then I was led to write to my Church. About ignorance about Who God is. And how should the Church, the body of Christ, function in this society.”

The point here is that John Wesley, and Martin Luther King jnr, and Mother Theresa, and Martin Luther the Reformer and Constantine of Hippo, and Archbishop of Canterbury William Temple, all icons in the history of the church, were not specially made men and women, but were equipped by the Holy Spirit to carry out the work of God in a particular age. To the glory of God!

I fear that we have become too dependent on the wisdom of men and women and not on the Power of the Holy Spirit. And which yearning for wisdom and recognition of special talents, when made more important than whether or not “ the Spirit of God is with this individual”, which takes special discernment, is at the root of the challenges which the world, and hence the nations, face in this dispensation.

I believe that a deeper understanding of what took place “on the night before He died”, could help advance the prayers for “ a spirit of revelation and wisdom”, which the church and by extension “ this corrupt generation”, desperately needs.

And what struck me as I spent some time tonight, and then was led to share was the grand opening paragraph in John 13:

“It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.”

John 13:1 NIV

For as we are all aware, many times, it is on “ his deathbed” that wisdom often flows from a father or mother. Not literally in all cases, but as they approach the hour of death, even when neither we nor them, have any inkling of what is about to happen. And therefore Jesus’ decision to “ now showed them the full extent of his love”, the translation in my NIV Bible, is of utmost importance for us who are the contemporary disciples and “ eat at his table” Sunday after Sunday, in this “ corrupt Jhanice Jackson generation”.

And for me, which is why I was led to write, the promise of “ another comforter” is the key to the declaration of “ the full extent of his love”. And therefore “ not to leave them as orphans”. Let us then celebrate even more, and pray for a fresh outpouring out the Holy Spirit in this age. So that we can like John Wesley, empowered by the Holy Spirit, help to give back to our nation its soul.

Peace

In obedience
