Murder, Sexual abuse of Women and The Cross of Christ

Usually I have an idea about what I going to write on a Saturday morning. And I thought I did, for this week I was moved to write a letter to The Church, but the Lord changed up everything.

So on a morning after the Police High Command called a press conference, or briefing, in response to the continued bloodletting, over 1400 murders, and up 25% over last year, to tell us what they plan to about it, the Lord led me back to Oswald Chambers for Christian Education.

At the end of a week, when the #Metoo campaign continues to reveal the sordid details of powerful men’s sexual abuse and inappropriate behavior towards women, ‘ out of the hearts of man comes all kinds of evil’, the Lord reminded me of two messages He inspired me to post on Twitter this week concerning Christian Education:

Twitter

The outstanding value of the bible is that it makes shameful things appear shameful because it never analyses them – Oswald Chambers

The discovery of the desperate recesses in the human heart is the greatest evidence of the need for the Redemption – Oswald Chambers

So the Police, inter alia, among other things, wish to educate us about the chief ‘ violent producers’, in our country. The really bad men responsible for much of the homicides in Jamaica! And also to allay our fears by telling us about human strategies to reduce murders.

And the #Metoo campaigners, quite rightly, seek to expose, and hopefully , to rid a society of, the evil and the presumptuousness of sexual abuse. At all levels! Thus helping to create former President George Bush’s ‘ more gentle ( and caring and respectful) society’. And protect the rights of women.

In the midst these national and international calumnies, always, the God of Abraham, reminds a broken world, through the ‘ body of Christ’, The Church, of Christ’s death and resurrection. For the sins of all mankind! Through the revelation of His Holy Word.

Oswald Chambers – Facing Reality

WHICH

But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I to the world. Galatians 6:14

God or Sin

God or Sin must die in me. The one elementary Bible truth that we are in danger of forgetting is that the Gospel of God is addressed to men ( and women) as sinners, and nothing else…..

Christ or Barabbas
And they crucified Him. Matthew 27: 35.

Christ vs. Barabbas – we have to choose. For a long while we can ignore sin and dwell in the fact that God is our Father, but if we mean by that, that He forgives our sin because He is loving, we make the Atonement a huge blunder and Calvary a mistake.

What does Barabbas represent? The expedient to Jesus Christ, something less radical, less emphatic, less against what we want……

Christ or the Old Man
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him.…. Romans 6:6

What is our “old man”? The disposition of sin in us discovered by the incoming Spirit of God when we are born from above. A Christian experiences the first work of God’s regenerating grace begins to discern this disposition, and the issue is clear that the old disposition must be crucified or the Sprit of Christ must be crucified, the two cannot remain long with each other…..

Christ or I
I have been crucified with Christ; yet I live, and no longer I, but Christ liveth in me. Galatians 2:20.

Christ or “I”? I means the religious ” I”, the spiritual ” I”, the pride of spiritual possession. Have we learned the glorious, unmistakable privilege of being crucified with Christ until all that is left is Christ’s flesh and Christ’s blood in our flesh and in our blood where once the world, the flesh and the devil had their way?
These are tremendous things to say in light of the way the modern mind looks at things, but not too tremendous in the light of the Gospel.

Christ and the World
...by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. Galatians 6:14

What is the world? The set of people with the ambitions, religious or otherwise, that are not identified with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul says, ” I am crucified to that world, and that world is crucified to me”.

When the world comes before us with its fascination and its power, it finds us dead to it, if we have agreed with God on His judgement about sin and the world….

A final word from Chambers on the Bible; for ultimately the Bible is the Word of God. Not Chambers’. Although in my journey the Lord has led me to read Chambers and so through his inspired writings gain deeper insight into God’s Word.

THE FACTS OF THE BIBLE AND THE THEORY OF INSPIRATION

The Bible is a world of revelation facts, and when you explain the Bible, take into account all the record of it.
The Bible nowhere says that we have to believe it is the Word of God
before we can become Christians. The Bible is not the Word of God to me unless I come at it through what Jesus says, it is of no use to me unless I know Him ( hmm?…corporal punishment….spare the rod and spoil the child ).
The key to my understanding of the Bible is not my intelligence, but personal relationship to Jesus Christ. I begin my theories after I have got on the inside. You may believe the Bible is the Word of God from Genesis to Revelations and not be a Christian at all.

Comment: So it’s all the work of the Holy Spirit that will change the hearts of violent producers and men who sexually abuse women. The church therefore, being part of the world must play its part in ridding the society of both evils.
But more importantly, the Church, being not of this world, but a manifestation of the supernatural power of God, must choose carefully if it intends to be what God has, in Christ Jesus, called us to be; ministers of the message of reconciliation of sinful man to God.

For ultimately, only God has the power to change the hearts of murderers and abusers. And all others sinners, a category in which we all fall. For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. That’s why Christ came at Christmas and died. And once again it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas again. At least the need for Redemption. Not the glitter. The substance. Not the hype.

That’s what the Bible teaches. A far greater and more important lesson than what the head of the IMF left with us this week!
That ” all of my help cometh from the Lord”. Psalm 121.

A sad mood in #Jamaicableeding: Peace only in Christ Jesus

This morning as I prepared to speak at a Road Safety meeting, the voice of an old favorite of mine came to mind. This, as the murder rate spirals out of control with over 700 murders for the year so far! And the realization that Road Crashes is  the second leading cause of violent death in my country; 161 to date.
Sam Cooke 1962: I am in sad mood tonight…..oh my baby done gone away and left me.
Gleaner Headlines today 2017:  Highlights and captures the mood, the indescribable sad mood,  of the country as another life is #gonetoosoon. Cut down in a hail of bullets!
Is this Independence?  The journey of a now sovereign nation, since 1962 ! What the ‘ devil  ‘ has gone wrong?
Why have we become so evil that not even women and children spared by marauding gunmen. Not even 80 and 90 year old grandmothers are beyond rape! Not even babies are beyond sexual abuse.

Not even the church is beyond attack by thieves.

Not even pastors are beyond committing acts of gross indecency  in public or in private.

Not even your wife and baby mother or girlfriend is beyond  murder most foul.
This week the sad mood continued.

11 shot one night with five dead. 5 another night with 3 dead.
And while the carnage continued, and blood and tears flow freely #FleetStreetNightmare, we are busy debating Crime Bills. And wondering how the Church can make a difference!
This week, from the depths of my soul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, I wrote on Facebook.
This week also,  I pondered on one of the most profound, encouraging and instructive passages of Scripture:
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of  talk, but about power.”

1 Cor. 4:20
And as I journeyed with the Lord in prayer for my country, and delved deep into Holy Scriptures and inspired writings, this one fact became clear.
This power, although manifest in many and different ways across the centuries, is fulfilled mainly in God’s design to rescue our minds from being controlled by the kingdom of darkness and brought into the kingdom of His Son Jesus Christ.
And that power comes by grace flowing from Christ’s great Act of Atonement for Sin on Calvary.
So the battle to rescue our nation from #FleetStreetNightmare is well and truly joined in the minds of our people.
For that reason I believe I was led to read and write that ” we fight not against flesh and blood……”.
And also that at centre of all evil causing #Jamaicableeding #ManchesterBombing and #ParisAttack is Sin.

ACQUAINTANCE WITH GRIEF
Oswald Chambers
Verse: A Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. Isaiah 53:3
We are not acquainted with grief in the way in which our Lord was acquainted with it; we endure it, we get through it, but we do not become intimate with it.
At the beginning of life we do not reconcile ourselves to the fact of sin. We take a rationale view of life and say that a man by controlling his instincts, and by educating himself,  can produce a life which slowly evolve into the life of God.
But as we go on,  we find the presence of something which we have not taken into consideration, viz, sin, and it upsets all our calculations.
Sin has made the basis of things wild and not rationale. We have to recognize that sin is a fact, not a defect ; sin is red-handed mutiny against God. Either God or Sin must die in my life.
The New Testament brings us right down to this one issue. If sin rules in me, God’s life in me will be killed; if God rules in me, sin in me will be killed.  There is no possible ultimate but that.
The climax of sin is that it crucified Jesus Christ, and what was true in the history of God on earth will be true in your history and mine. In our mental outlook we have to reconcile ourselves to the fact of sin as the only explanation as to why Jesus Christ came, and tge explanation of the grief and sorrow in life.

Pray that we may live so that all whom we meet,  may come to know the God who forgives all sins and heals all diseases. The God who knows that we are but dust and unto dust we shall return. A God who is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love…..who does not deal with us according to our sins…..but who in Christ died on Calvary so that we may live a new and unending life.

Augustine ( 354- 430……became Bishop of Hippo, North Africa…..a figure of major importance in the Church.. ..He established the doctrine of the Church gave a clear statement concerning the person of Christ, and made the grace of God the theme of the Theology in the West……but committed himself to God late  after much prayer by his Christian mother)
One of his most famous and penetratingly  accurate observations,  is still quoted often in the 21st Century:
“Thou hast made us for thyself O Lord,  and our heart is  restless until it finds its rest in thee”.
 – Lately have I loved thee. O Beauty so ancient and so new; late have I loved thee; for behold thou wert within me, and I outside, and I sought thee outside and in my unloveliness fell upon those things that thou hast made.

Thou wert with me, and I was not with thee. I was kept from loving thee by those things, yet had they not been in thee, they would have been at all………
Part of the challenge in finding a solution  to #Jamaicableeding  #Gleanerheadlines  #EdBartlett is that those things that we love, kill for, quarrel about, and are prepared to die for, all come from God. Including family.  Including our ability to think and reason and reject God, or ignore Him. Including the concept of Freedom – the foundations of democracy, a free press and human rights. Read H. Orlando Patterson’s epic book on Freedom in the Making of Western Culture. And scholars argue that Augustine’s City of God heavily influenced the shaping of Western civilization.
Simply, very simply put, the call of the Church is then to embrace God, and not the things and gifts that He alone gives. As otherwise our hearts become restless and all sorts of evil emerge. Including #Hanoverbleeding. But it is better late than never. And a merciful God is always calling. Individuals and nations! For we just cannot manage on our own. No matter how bright we think we are.  Which is what I was led to reflect on this morning. And share. There was more. But more anon. Peace. NB. Philosophy matters #IanBoyne #InFocus

Last night on #CVMTV. ” Crime has nothing to do with poverty” – A pastor  with an inner city ministry.  He was ridiculed on and off TV. By the religious and the irreligious.
Last night on #TVJAllangles  A New Crime Bill was ‘ taken to the cleaners ‘ by a lawyer. Scrap it!

I’ll share some of the key points God willing, another time. But for now, on this day, when the #Gleaner Headlines agree with Earl Moxam and Emily Shields #BeyondPolicing  #BeyondTheHealines ” Deal with the social issues”, the following quote says it all:
The devil wrestles with God, and the field of battle is the human heart – Fyodor Dostoevsky
Maybe the ‘ lowly and ignorant ‘ and   unschooled pastor was not so foolish after all.
All of this is  pure coincidence or a Word from the Lord!  The choice is yours, but ‘ as for me and my house ‘, the words of this hymn came into my mind:

Poverty and Crime  contd. #Earlymorningdevotions
Randomly I opened my Classics Devotional Bible this morning and found this:
THE ENDS ARE SWALLOWED BY THE MEANS
Martin Luther king Jr
Verse: Amos 8: 4 ” Hear this, you that  trample on the needy, and bring the poor to ruin…..”
Only an irrelevant religion fails to be concerned about man’s economic well being. Religion at its best realized that the soul is crushed as long the body is tortured with hunger pangs and narrowed with the need for shelter.
Jesus realized that we need food, clothing, shelter and economic security. He said in clear and concise : ” Your Father knows what you need”. Matthew 6:8.
But Jesus knew that a man was more than a dig to be satisfied by a few economic bones. He realized that the internal of a man’s life is as significant as the external.  So he added, ” Strive first for the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”. vs 33 .
The tragedy of the rich man was that he sought the means first, and in the process the ends were swallowed in the means.
Comment: The tragedy which is manifest on the  #Gleanerheadlines  #morethanathousandwords  #EdBartlett #Jamaicableeding is that successive political leaders have paid attention to one, the economy, and largely ignored the other, the kingdom of God. And if truth be told it is a story writ large in the rising  popularity of the  #ProsperiryGospel.
For no New International Economic Order, no sloganeering of ” It takes cash to care”, can deal with the kind of evil which has been let loose in Jamaica ” land we love”. No #progress no #prosperity can replace the need for us to ” seek ye first the kingdom of God”, if we wish to remove crime. Not just from #Gleanerheadlines but from the depths of the human experience in #Jamaicableeding.
A message the Bible believing church has been preaching for years! But sadly men and women of influence have closed their collective ears to the truth. And so the land mourns. And we wonder why and spend our times ” debating the issues”.

Will someone please tell the PM. And the Opposition Leader! That Jamaica is in ‘spiritually naked’, in serious danger,  and needs to repent.

Peace

Zoleka Mandela, South African Royalty. Jesus Christ, Heavenly Royalty

This week I spent quality time with South African ‘ Royalty ‘.  With Zoleka Mandela the granddaughter of Nelson and Winnie Mandela!

Of slight build. But  pretty as a picture. Quiet, but commanding voice. With the Miriam Makeeba lilt. An internationally-acclaimed road safety advocate. Moving people to tears! Our own Prime Minister confessed he was on the brink. I came close too.
But fragile. And has been through a lot! Her story will be aired on the award winning #Profile on #TVJ, hosted by Ian Boyne;  not this Sunday but the next one. Riveting stuff. Painful stuff. But full of hope, as she rose like the phoenix from the dust. To become a much sought after motivational speaker!

The host of #HotlineonRJRFM #EmilyShields,  one of Jamaica’s best and brightest, graciously agreed to interview Zoleka. And when Emily  found out about the #FreeMandela connection,  she was ‘ over the moon’.  Estatic! Like seriously enraptured! As for those of us who grew up – ES must have been a yoing girl – during the ‘ struggle ‘, Nelson Mandela is like Royalty.

Emily even began to sing ” Bring back Nelson Mandela “. #HughMasekela. On radio. Live! And was accompanied by ‘ caught up in the fever’, rasta drumming, by one of the party.

She even met Jamaican  ‘ Royalty’. And posed for pictures with the ‘ big man’. #UsainBolt. And ‘ coach ‘ too!

Spoke about ‘ Gone too soon ‘. And more!

So South African Royalty came. Conquered the hearts of many. The excitement at the Jamaica Cancer Society where she visited was palpable. And left. After three days. To catch a 15 hour flight back to Jo’berg. But first a short stop to NY. What sacrifice. She hopes to return. When? Who knows! But a little piece of her heart was left here. Treasured by those who took pictures with her. Gave her a hug. Prayed with her. And just loved her. Not just because she is Royalty. But because, as Taurus Riley sang.

 ‘ She is Royal’!
This week also I spent time, quality time, with Royalty. Of a different kind altogether!

And He revealed to me, through His Word, one of the great lessons in the Bible.
What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound ? By no means!

How can we who died to so go on living in it?  Do you not know that all of us were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him in baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. Romans 6: 1-4.

The passage resonated so much with me, even though I had read it so many times before. As it reminded me of one of the fundamental truths of the Christian Faith. That we have died! In Christ. And in Him raised to a new life. Powerful stuff. Life and game changing stuff. The Gospel Truth!
A truth which led to the posting of this message on Facebook.
FACEBOOK ONE

When things seem not to be going your way, try not to be suspicious of God. He is a good God. He is a faithful God! We need to trust Him in every circumstance, however bleak it may appear. Personal  stuff. Other people. Nation. That’s the ‘ mind of Christ ‘ we are to cultivate, for we have been buried with Christ at Baptism.  And just as how Christ was raised from the dead to a new life,  to the glory of God, so too with Him, we are raised from the ‘ old man who died’, to Eternal life. Romans 6 #earlymorningdevotions

So to be suspicious of God is to allow the ‘ old man ‘,  now dead in Christ, to once again take control. Perish the thought. O for grace to follow thee more. For in Christ, the old man, the law,  sin and yes, even death itself, no longer rule. Only Christ in whom we have new and unending Life. Right now.

Comment – It’s great to ‘ hang ‘ with earthly Royalty for a while. Whether South African or Jamaican. And to love and appreciate them. But  that’s it. Back to Jo’berg.  Back to training. And still fragile. Regardless!

But with Heavenly Royalty, the Psalmist- which I was led to read tonight – gets it right. Heavenly Royalty is to be blessed. For only He is a Healer. And full of mercy.

Yet fragile. As the Christ child. But raised from the dead. With power. And therefore  always with us. Always healing.
PSALM 103

Bless the Lord , O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.  Bless the Lord , O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:  Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;  Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;  Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.  …….

The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.  He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.  He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.  For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.  As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

Psalms 103:1‭-‬5‭, ‬8‭-‬12 KJV

Chris Tiegreen has the last word.

After Cleansing
Verse: Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means!
“……Unfortunately, history is filled with Christians who have taken grace too casually. We have seen it abundantly and concluded that  with much of it to go around, we might as well spend it recklessly.

Casual grace has led us to conclude that sin is not that big of a deal, that we weren’t that badly off to begin with, and that God is not really as uptight and holy as we once made Him ought to be.
But while that’s the prevailing view of casual Christianity, it isn’t biblical. Grace was given to free us from sin, not free us up for more of it. Make sure you understand the difference. God is still Holy, and grace is still precious. Always live in a way that shows that both are sacred to you.”

The question is, have we truly died with Christ, by grace,  to sin and death and fear. If not,  then people won’t see the Risen Christ in us. Thank us for bringing Him to visit.  And get excited. Not about us. But about Him. For He only is King. And highly exalted!

Scammers Extradicted by Americans : Sinners Rescued by Grace

”It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair…..”.

Famous words, from a famous man! The opening lines of a famous book, A Tale of Two Cities, written by Charles Dickens, a long time ago, could easily apply to Jamaica, and indeed, the entire world.

Thus validating the words of another famous expression, ‘Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose’. The more things change the more they remain the same. A philosophy which another famous man, the late  Jamaican and former Michael Manley, describe, in The Politics of Change’, if my memory serves my well,  as coming from the ‘ pessimistic French people; this rebuttal emerging from his own sense of mission and  determination to be an agent of change. Perhaps another famous  former POTUS, BO,’  The Audacity of Hope ‘, had a similar sense of mission.
These thoughts came to mind as I reflected on the madness, the worst of times, which were on full display in my beloved nation yesterday.

In the morning, I felt a sense of shame and disgust. By evening, the nation was in shock. Again!
In the morning the headlines of both national newspaper carried the story and pictures which ‘ spoke a thousand words ‘, of ‘scammers’, including a mother and sons, being lead away by US agents. Extradicted! Eight of them. With  a declaration by a senior embassy official, on a popular tall show programme hosted by #EmilyShields, of ‘ more to come’.

Including attorneys who were under investigation for assisting the scammers to ‘ rinse’ launder, their ill gotten and filthy lucre!

Men and women whose determination to ‘ milk’, con, scam,  from unsuspecting and gullible elderly Americans, their hard earned money, had triggered death and mayhem and destruction in my country. And pain and grief in, and now the full wrath,  of the ‘long arm’ of the Americans!

Then in the evening madness erupted on one of the busiest streets in our capital Kingston. A corridor which I traverse regularly.   At  the end, a policeman lay dead. Shot several times by a would be robber. And who in turn was shot and killed by a soldier who was ‘ passing by’. At the right time!

All of this taking place on a day when our high school female athletes, fresh from their exploits at the now Internationally famous ‘Champs ‘, were ‘ burning up the track’, at the famous Penn Relays in the US. With their male counterparts threatening, based on the results of the heats, to do the same today.
All of this happening as a nation celebrated, this achievement, which I first heard about on another talk show programme on radio hosted by #djmiller, as reported in the Daily Gleaner a few days ago:

“Jamaica’s image on the international stage received a boost recently, as a team of students from the Norman Manley Law School recently placed second at the prestigious Philip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition, which was held in Washington, DC, United States.
Representing the institution were Jhade Lindsay, Victor Brown, Anna-Kay Brown, Scott Mullings and Kalisia Miller. They were coached by attorney-at-law Marc Ramsay.
The quintet also copped a number of other awards, including a second-place finish in the championship, third overall for written memorials, and first place in the applicant side, written memorials.
Mullings was ranked the second-best speaker in the world, with Miller ranked fifth.
“It is a fantastic achievement, not purely for Norman Manley Law School, but for education in Jamaica,” said Ramsay, in his third year as coach.
This is the ninth year that Jamaican law students have entered the prestigious mock court competition. Their next highest finish was a semi-final appearance in 2011.
FORCE AT MOOTING

“We have been a force at mooting for some time now and again we proved our status as one of the best. These young people worked tirelessly to reach this stage, and I am extremely proud of them,” Ramsay told The Gleaner.
In terms of international law moot courts, the Philip C. Jessup Moot Court has the widest global coverage, with 640 law schools from 95 countries .

But as wretched as these people who have sullied the good name of my country, and the same story can be ‘ trumpeted’ in America, in many different ‘ barracks ‘, over many years, the transcendental reality, if we listen to both the exploits of man and The Word of God, is that ‘ frightenly’, and to us very soberingly, they are not alone.

They are not an isolated case. A mere blip on the moral pages of life.

No. Absolutely not. For in the eyes of a Holy God, despite the fact that aspects of the image of God, in which we were all make still reside in us, that image has been badly marred by sin. And so we are all wretched. And in a blink of an eye, if we are not careful, can commit the most heinous of crimes.

Fall into what one writer aptly called  ‘ the banality of evil ‘!
And so I was inspired to write on Facebook this week. In this order. For me the precience, in some cases, perhaps in all,  if we look deeper,  is always amazing. Praise God.

If you only listen to the news of the day, you will become not only confused and distressed, but wonder if there is any hope. Gunmen launch an attack on a police station in Clarendon; Huge gun and ammunition find in a barrel in St. James; Shottas recruited directly from schools; a woman beaten in her home and left for dead.  Murder! Abuse! Cries of corruption! Injustice! A litany of woes.

But then in my #earlymorningdevotions the Lord speaks:
First, ” On the road to Emmaus”………while they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself came near and and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing Him……….when He was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened” . Luke 24:13-35. The Gospel reading in my church for next Sunday.
And this song which my Rector used in his sermon yesterday, came flooding into my mind. The first verse.

And reminded me that there are two narratives being played in the world today. We must listen to one, to learn how to serve, and pray. And listen to the other, to learn how to humble one’s self, and be obedient. To the Risen Christ!
And then He, Himself, will come alongside us, and grant us Shalom. The Peace that passeth all human understanding.  And open our eyes, to see Him. In the midst of the confusion! Even in the midst of flood waters (of varying kinds) that threaten our very existence. And the noise of Carnival that would prevent us hearing and seeing Him in His Glory.
I serve a risen Savior

  He’s in the world today.

I know that He is living,

  Whatever men may say.

I see His hand of mercy;

  I hear His voice of cheer;

And just the time I need Him

  He’s always near.

He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today!

He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way.

He lives, He lives, salvation to impart!

You ask me how I know He lives?

 He lives within my heart.

A message for the brokenhearted.
It didn’t start with this psalm. But that’s where my ‘ song in the night ended’.

Verse: Psalm 147:3
He healeth the broken in heart……He telleth the number of stars” (KJV). What a surprising conjunction is found in this twin attribute of God – active pity in the small circles of human experience and unmeasurable power in the great realms of creation.
Here is God manifesting Himself in both the remotest and the nearest things of which we may have knowledge  – the universal and the personal.
Comment: Defend the God who you know through the shed Blood of Jesus The Crucified One. A God who is full of mercy and compassion, and yet a God who has the power to ‘ raise the dead’, and grant us peace in the midst of the storm.

Let us announce to a dying world, by word and by deed, in good times and in times of suffering, in season and out of season, that we serve a Risen Lord.
And that He alone can rescue this  brokenhearted country of ours. From gunmen, abusers and sickness. From extreme poverty, from disobedient children, the ravages of floods and hurricanes. From intoxicated men with guns, from the excesses of Carnival and Dancehall. And from painful memories #SnowBoy  #WildGilbert #TivoliIncursion #PoliticalTribalism
From injustice – of two Jamaicas. From corruption in high places.  And from church people  trying to escape from living under the cross of Christ.

Which is how my ‘ song in the night ‘ started.

In obedience. Peace!

No! We do not have the all answers to our problems, despite what you hear in the Parliament and on the talk show programmes. Nor what #Alkaline  – and Damion Crawford claim – that he has the formula.
That’s why:
God sent His son, they called Him, Jesus;

He came to love, heal and forgive;

He lived and died to buy my pardon,

An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives!
Let us as inviduals, come to our senses, and realize that ” we can’t even walk without Him holding our hands” and cry out to God for help. In this land of Violence and Crime, Injustice and Unrighteouesness!

Rev. Timothy Keller ” The Reason For God : Belief in an Age of Skepticism answering questions.
Questions: Each religion sees part of spiritual truth but none can see the whole truth.
Answer……..How could you possibly know that no religion can see the whole truth unless you yourself have the superior, comprehensive knowledge of spiritual reality you just claimed that none of the religions have?
My comment: Having, for many, many  years worked ( and witnessed ) in an inner city, I have met very few  women who absolutely do not wish to be Baptised one day. Just today,  one who has no desire  to get married, admitted,  when challenged, that she had intentions of getting baptised one day; and agreed  that boyfriend and Christianity could not mix. The story, however,  with men and my middle class friends, is quite different. Some think about these things. But for others it is of little moment; or they have adopted an entirely different set of  beliefs.  I wonder why! Are men and middle class  folks wiser than working class women. Or just more skeptical about the Word of God.

Facebook Five

One word perfectly captures the status of this very ‘ sorry’ group of Jamaicans ( and more to come)  whose activities have triggered so much mayhem locally,  and pain and grief abroad. Wretched!
The challenge, in this context,  for most people,  in this age  where we have access to almost instant news,  aided by  advanced technology, is to accept and to sing, with conviction,  the words of one of the most famous, and well loved, by believers and unbelievers alike,   Christian hymns:
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,

that saved a wretch like me……
A working class man, who had spent too much time with Goggle rather than listen to his grandmother, recently asked me, ‘ how could I, a scientist, believe in God.’?
Then this morning in my #earlymorningdevotions  I opened my Devotional Bible and found a meditation by one of the world’s greatest scientists. Blaise Pascal!

1623-1662…..one of the great minds in western intellectual history, and eminent mathematician and physicist who at the same time was  one of the greatest mystical writers in Christian literature.
By the age of 12 Pascal had worked out the equivalent of many of Euclid’s geometrical theorems. At 19 he invented the first practical calculating machine. Later he verified the theory of atmospheric pressure and formulated the mathematical theory of probability, a fundamental element of modern theoretical physics. And who penned this reflection. Which has been such a blessing to me. Hopefully you will find comfort for your souls in it also.
JESUS CHRIST  – THE MIDDLE WAY
Verse: Psalm 51: 1 Have mercy on me, O God…..blot out my transgressions
Abridged version.
The God of Christians is not a God who is simply the author of mathematical truths, or of the order of the elements……Nor is he merely a God who providentially disposes the life and fortunes of men, to crown his worshipers with length of happy years. Such was the portions of the Jews.
But the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, the God of Christians, is a God of love and consolation, a God who fills the souls and hearts of his own, a God who makes them feel their inward wretchedness and his infinite mercy, who unites himself to their inmost spirit, filling it with humility and joy, with confidence and love, rendering them incapable of any other end other than himself ( I’ll share with you soon what I read on this issue; from Oswald Chambers last night).
………The knowledge of God without that of our wretchedness creates pride. The knowledge of our wretchedness without that of God creates despair. The knowledge of Jesus Christ is the middle way, because in him we find both God and our wretchedness.
And the Psalmist, David, a wretched man who had done so much wrong, and yet  so much good, made this appeal. And revelation at the same time!

‘ …..A broken and contrite heart, O God you will not despise

 Verse 17.
But only one who has felt this wretchedness can honestly cry out to God like that. O God that more and more of us would feel this inward wretchedness. Because that is the Gospel Truth which led to our rescue by the Blood of the Lamb. Christ The Crucified One.

And so the story on the front page of the Gleaner yesterday is also our story writ large. Before a Holy God.  Wretched! But thank God for Jesus.

Trump, Tambourine Warriors and ‘ Why did Christ die’?

GM: THIRD LENTEN MESSAGE; DISTRACTIONS AND PEACE IN GOD ALONE
It’s not easy. It is definitely not easy to concentrate on keeping a Holy Lent, when there are so many distractions.
Like Donald Trump tweeting early in the morning,  accusing former President Obama,  of  ordering Trump Tower, his former home,  to be wiretapped. Without offering any shred of evidence!
And some would say….heard on CNN last night…..triggered by a  cynical attempt to deflect attention from the real  news, not #fakenews, that  members of his administration are under investigation for more serious stuff,  that’s likely to emerge soon.
Like the head of the #Tabourinewarriors,  defying an order to cease from  #Saytheirnames. Without offering any shred of evidence!  And then being arrested for a cyber crime.  Thus triggering multiple protests and comments on social media,  targeting the, female,  acting head of the police force; a  ‘ favourite priest ‘, because he, a man,  dared to ‘ insert himself’,  in the conversation; and a white,  very liberal, gracious,  and warm hearted blogger,  for having a contrary viewpoint.  All because of #Rage! Which some say ought to ‘ trump’, everything else. Even the established process of uncovering truth! Thus, becoming, in my view, guilty of,  ‘ losing the plot’, as they were founded as an advocacy group,  seeking to protect women from being sexually abused, injured and killed by men. But now, find themselves,   in,  and beyond the headlines, for the wrong reasons! While ‘ Rome continues to burn’!
Thank God in the midst of all of this,  a dear Sister in Christ,  sent me a reflection on Psalm 62. Thus putting an end to the distractions!

For who can but be moved to serious meditation, when, ” For God alone, my soul  waits in silence”, confronts you in the opening verse. And then:

For God alone my soul waits in silence;

from him comes my salvation.

He alone is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress; I shall never be shaken…..
Then comes this amazingly modem day  contextually challenging  revelation;
How long will you assail a person,

will you batter your victim, all of you……

Their only plan is to bring down a person of prominence.

They take pleasure in falsehood;

they bless with their mouths,

but inwardly they curse…..

Put no confidence in extortion,

and set no vain hopes on robbery;

if riches  increase, do not set your heart on them…..”

And whilst I spent my lunchtime reflecting on the need to focus on God, and God alone……nobody else…nothing else….not Trump’s budget leaving the arts ‘ high and dry…..not Finance Minister Audley Shaw’s budget leaving health insurance ‘ in  a spin’….just God. In the background,  in my mind,  strains of this haunting Lenten hymn, joined the ‘ conversation ‘.
THE HYMN

1 My spirit longs for thee

within my troubled breast,

though I unworthy be

of so divine a guest.
2 Of so divine a guest

unworthy though I be,

yet has my heart no rest

unless it come from thee.
3 Unless it come from thee,

in vain I look around;

in all that I can see

no rest is to be found.
4 No rest is to be found

but in thy blessed love:

O let my wish be crowned,

and send it from above!

For increasingly, as I get older, hopefully wiser, and drawn closer to my blessed Redeemer God, this conviction gets stronger; that true rest is only found in God.
For after acquiring all the bling, if that is your thing; after feasting musically on #Adi, Buju….you wretch yu….Sean Paul, Adele, Montana  or Destra, or Beethovens Fifth, or Handel’s Messiah….whatever is your thing; reading or having read to you Derrick Walcott’s…a giant of the Caribbean who died yesterday……poems….and feasting further on Claude McKay’s…if we must die, let us not die like hogs, hunted and penned; having shopped in ‘Gay Paree’, or  London, or New York….one fine day you, and I,  will have to meet our maker. Who alone offers, ‘ eternal rest ‘.

That’s why we must carefully about blandly, and without deep  consideration,  wishing that those who just died, RIP.

For the unvarnished Truth, is that, only those who die in Christ, are assured of that Peace.

“For God so loved the world…..that they should not perish.” John 3:16

And to perish,  is to live without God and, not to enjoy the peace ‘ that passeth all human understanding ‘.
No wonder one of the most influential, not just an early church father, but of the entire western civilization, famously wrote:

“This is the famous passage from St. Augustine’s Confessions (Lib 1,1-2,2.5,5: CSEL 33, 1-5) in which Saint Augustine states “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”

It is in this context then, that the messages I was inspired to post on Facebook,  after #ReadingagoodbookforLent,  become relevant.

As we in the 21st Century,  are,  ‘ The children of Israel ‘,  of this age, empowered by the Holy Spirit of God, to spread the Gospel of the Redeeming love of Jesus Christ to a dying world. We, therefore can ill afford to become distracted by events, which will cause us to ‘ lose the plot’, and take our eyes off the Cross of Christ. Hence a deep understanding of what took place on Calvary is the most important ‘ fast ‘, we can engage in this Lent. As ” our souls in silence wait for God alone”. And who reveals Himself fully, only in and through the shed Blood of Jesus Christ.#GoodFriday

Why did Jesus die?
Step five 5⃣
Judas betrayed Jesus, ‘ handed him over ‘,  because of greed. ” What other dark passions were seething in his heart,  we can only guess, but John ( the Apostle)  insists that it was monetary  greed that finally overcame him.
It is not for nothing that Jesus tells us to , ‘ beware of all covetousness’, or that Paul declares the love of money 💰 to be,  ‘ a root of all evil’. For in pursuit of money,  human beings have descended into deep depravity.
Magistrates have perverted justice for bribes…..Amos ….they sell  the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals  (2:6)…Politicians have used their power to give contracts to the highest bidder….businessmen  have entered into shady transactions, jeopardizing the prosperity of others in order to get a better deal.
Even supposedly spiritual teachers have been known to turn religion into a commercial enterprise, and some are doing it today…..the language of all such people 👫 is the same as that of Judas: ‘ what are you willing to give me, and I will hand him over to you……..Jesus had said that it is impossible to serve God and money. Judas chose money. Many others have done the same”.

Rev. John Stott ‘ The Cross of Christ’ .

My Comment: It is in this context, inter alia,  that we gain greater  insight into the deep divide between rich and poor in Jamaica; the existence of #wrongadresses….and the role politics,  and some politicians, and those who support them uncritically, have played in the emergence of #Garrisoncommunities……and the corruption of our music 🎵….sold to the higher bidder….regardless of #misogyny #gunlyrics  #slackness….#dancehall and #carnival ….even the #Prosperitygospel…  developments for which we all have a shared responsibility. Usually ‘my’, early morning 🌅devotions are more structured. But every so often the Lord intervenes.

‘Were you there when they crucified my Lord?’

A questioned posed by one of my favourite hymns, the words of which came flooding into my heart 💟 this morning.
THE HYMN
Thou didst leave thy throne and thy kingly crown,

When thou camest to earth for me;

But in Bethlehem’s home was there found no room

For thy holy Nativity:
O come to my heart, Lord Jesus

There is room in my heart for thee
4th Verse
Thou camest, O Lord, with the living word

That should set thy people 👫free;

But with mocking scorn and with crown of thorn

They bore thee to Calvary:
O come to my heart Lord Jesus

There is room in my heart for thee.
And history according to Holy Scripture,  records this response in Acts 2:36-40
” Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you Crucified, both Lord and Christ.

When the people heard this , they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, Brothers what shall we do?

Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins.

With many other words he warned them ; and he pleaded with them , Save yourself from this corrupt generation. Those who accepted his message were Baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.”

Step six 6⃣ : why did Jesus die?

” The blaming of the Jewish people 👫 for the crucifixion of Jesus is extremely unfashionable today…….The way to avoid anti-semitic prejudice, however, is not to pretend that the Jews were innocent, but, having admitted  their guilt, to add that others share in it……More importantly still, we are also guilty.  If we were in their place, we would have done what they did. Indeed we have done it.

For whenever we turn away from Christ, we ‘ are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace’. Hebrews 6:6.
We too sacrifice Jesus to our greed like Judas, to our envy like the priests, to our ambition like Pilate. ” Were you there when they crucified my Lord?” the old negros spiritual asks.
And we must answer ‘ Yes ‘ we were there.  Not as spectators only but as participants, plotting, scheming, betraying, bargaining, and handing him over to be Crucified. We may try to  wash our hands like Pilate. But our attempt will be as futile as his. For there is blood on our hands.

Before we can see the Cross as something done for us ( leading us to faith and worship), we have to see it as something done by us ( leading us to repentance).

Indeed,  ‘ only the man who is prepared to own his share in the  guilt of the Cross, may claim his share in its grace.”
The Cross of Christ by Rev John Stott.

Final word on ‘ why did Jesus die’?
” The answer which we have so far given to the question ❔, ‘ why did Jesus die?’, has sought to reflect the way in which the Gospel writers tell their story. They point to the chain of responsibility ( from Judas to the priests, from the priests to Pilate, from Pilate to the soldiers), and they at least hint that the greed, envy, and fear which promted their behaviour also prompts ours.
Yet this is not the complete account which the evangelists give. I have omitted one further and vital piece of evidence which they supply. It is this: that although Jesus was brought to his death by human sins, did not die as a martyr.

On the contrary, he went the Cross voluntarily, even deliberately. From the beginning of his public ministry he consecrated himself to his destiny…….
Octavius Winslow summed it up in a neat statement: ‘ Who delivered up.Jedus to die? Not  Judas for money 💰; not Pilate for fear 😱; not the Jews, for envy; – but the Father , for love.
It is essential to keep these two 2⃣ complementary ways of looking on the Cross.

On the human level, Judas gave him up to the priests, who gave him up to Pilate, who gave him up to the soldiers, who Crucified him.
But on the divine level, the Father gave him up, and he gave him up to die for us. As we face the Cross, then, we can say to ourselves both, ‘ I did it, my sins sent him there’, and,  ‘ he did it, his love took him there.’  ”
The Cross of Christ by Rev John Stott

My Comment: For this reason, God’s redeeming love is available  to all mankind. Whether Tambourine Army or those who commit violent acts against women; whether Kartel or Kevin Downswell; whether Jews or Gentile; whether Muslim or Christian; whether Gay or Straight; whether dancehall or carnival lovers; whether Trump or Obama; whether green or orange; whether backslider or Bishop; whether Moravian or Baptist; whether you live in Norbrook or in a #wrongaddress; whether you were in the headlines today or operate way  beyond the headlines. For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. And there is only One Mediator between man God. Christ the Crucified One.

Peace.
 #ReadingagoodbookforLent
Finally a prayer/verse of a hymn, one of my favourite, and posted on Facebook,  offers a benediction for this message.

Look, Father, look on his anointed face,

and only look on us as found in him;

look not on our misusings of thy grace,

our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim:

for lo, between our sins and their reward

we set the Passion of thy Son our Lord.

May God forgive us all for misusing His Grace, freely offered to all, in the Life, Death, Ressurection and Ascension  ( thus sending the promised Holy Spirit) of His only Son. Jesus Christ, the Crucified One.

Peace

THE SECOND LENTEN MESSAGE: PETER IN PRISON, THE WORLD IN PRISON.

GM: TROUBLE IN JAMAICA, IN AMERICA AND THE CROSS OF CHRIST
Peter, the Apostle was in trouble. In fact in desperate trouble! King Herod, had put to death James, the brother of John. And the Jews were pleased. So he proceeded to lock up Peter, and had in mind a more public destruction of this man of God.

And history, as written in the Holy Scriptures, recorded the fact that, ‘ but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.’ Acts 12:5 NIV.
Jamaica is in trouble. In fact in desperate trouble! So too America.

The actors are different but the script remains the same. Evil has invaded the prevailing culture. The same one who history records in the Holy Scriptures,  ‘ has come to steal, to kill and to destroy ‘, is working furiously, and  having orchestrated the death of many, is now poised to destroy.

Whether it be ‘crack cocaine’,  the addiction to which  devastated the lives of many inner city youths, in ‘ the hood’. Or heroin which is currently wreaking havoc in middle and upper  class America!

Whether it be the ‘ gun culture’ in Jamaica or Scamming, fueled by political tribalism, greed, poverty, or the current hot debate’ #kartel  and dancehall music mash up Jamaica.

Whether it be the almost ubiquitous  engagement in pornography, facilitated but certainly not caused by the  widespread access to the Internet,  by the young and not so young. Of which #backitup…like a dumper truck, and #getonbaad in the streets, #dancehall and #carnival, are but minor but public manifestations.

Thus seriously undermining moral values and promoting unbridled sexual desires and activity in our schools.

Whether it be the calculated erosion of family life, the basic unit of any society. Manifest in particular, but not solely, by the ‘ sperm donor syndrome’.
Whether it be the unfortunate loss of  hundreds of thousands of life caused by AIDS,  the millions killed by  abortions, or genocide which has wiped out populations.

Many other examples abound. But,

having killed, evil, continues to plot it’s ultimate goal.  Destruction. The ‘ overthrow of the Sovereign God’. The Holy One of Israel. Thus making the Church irrelevant  and the Atonement for Sin,  wrought by Jesus of Nazareth, descended from David, merely a fictitious tale.
Then history records,  as reported  in Holy Scriptures, that in response to earnestly prayers of the Church, God sent an Angel to rescue Peter.
Not the Army or the Police. Not a set of lawyers to argue his case. Not the media to expose this egregious wrong. Not a set of business people to purchase his freedom. Not politicians to order his release. No. Just one Angel.

” They passed  the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him”. Acts 12:10. NIV.

And so Chris Tigreen whose meditation on this story led me to read it, writes in his One Year Wonder of The Cross Devotional.

In part.

INTENSE

So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.
……..This was a desperate prayer – a gut-wrenching, sweat-inducing prayer accompanied by loud crying and tears.  The  kind of prayer that seems to reach God’s heart better than any other.
That kind of prayer can come only in the intersection of two conditions: extreme need and an awareness of God’s ability and willingness to meet it. Desperation alone will not drive us to that kind of prayer; without us knowing who God is, extreme need leads only to frustration. No, in order to have any hope in a crisis, we have to bank on the character of the One who is above it.

In the midst of this remarkable story of the  assault on the members of the early church, and the urgent lessons which our society ought to learn from it, including taking Lent seriously,  the Lord led me to post on Facebook.

One of the saddest features of Islam, is that it rejects the Cross, declaring it inappropriate that a major prophet of God should come to such an ignominious end. The Koran sees no need for the sin-bearing death of a Saviour – The Cross of Christ by Rev. John Stott #AshWednesday #Lent #GoodFriday

There is a core to the proclamation of both apostles, Peter and Paul,  which might be reconstructed ( from their sermons in the book of Acts as follows.
” Jesus was a man who was accredited by God through miracles and anointed by the Spirit to do good and to heal. Despite this, he was Crucified through the agency of wicked men, though also by God’s purpose according to the Scriptures that the Messiah must suffer.
Then God reversed the human verdict on Jesus by raising him  from the dead, and also according to Scriptures, and as attested by apostolic eyewitnesses. Next God exalted him to the place of high honour as Lord and Saviour.

He now posesses full authority both to save those who repent , believe and are baptized in his name, bestowing on them the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Spirit, and to judge those who reject him”.
The Doctrine of the Death of Christ from the New Testament sermons by Peter and Paul as recorded by Luke. The Cross of Christ by Rev John Stott

Places #Kartel and #Trump  in perspective as ‘ all have sinned’. #AshWednesday #Lent  #GoodFriday #Easter

Love is patient…kind…does not envy….is not proud…is not rude…is not self-seeking….is not easily angered….keeps no records of wrongs….does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth….protects…trusts…hopes….perseveres.

1 Corinthians.  13
The goal of Christian discipleship is to be conformed to the image of Christ; who came to model the character of God for us and then sent His Spirit to live within us…..

Only God’s Spirit can give us that kind of love. Ask for that kind of love today. Ask the Spirit to show you God’s love, to fill you with it, and enable you to live it and show it to others. It’s a prayer He is certain to answer.

O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end…Be Thou forever near me my Master and my friend. I shall not fear the battle if thou art my side, nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide……. O let me feel thee near me; the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but, Jesus, draw thou nearer, and shield my soul from sin.
Final Comments. Three issues arise from the Facebook postings and Chris Tiegreen’s meditation.
One is that evil is working within the church to undermine its credibility. And not just attacking it from without!

Hence the Daily Gleaner’s  front page report this morning that a pastor convicted of sexually assaulting a minor has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

And there is more. Much more. Including the rise to prominence of the ‘ Prosperity Gospel ‘. Which is no gospel at all. And the little understood,  but  nontheless very dangerous doctrine creeping insidiously  into the church and society – Pantheism. That God is a God of love,  is everywhere, and is in everybody.  And makes no demands on us,  except to ‘ love one another’. Thus making Sin and the Cross ‘ unnecessary’. A doctrine straight from the pit of hell. But very  appealing to those looking for  what the great German martyr,  and theologian, Bonhoeffer,   terms ‘ cheap grace’.
It is for this reason that as believers,  we need to, urgently and consistently, remind ourselves of the Doctrine of Sin, and why Jesus died.  And Lent is a gift from God for the church and society to ‘ think on these things’. For Sin underrated and ill understood and unrepented,  will continue to undermine, but never, destroy the church; against which ‘ the gates of hell shall not prevail ‘.
Two,  is that, unless we love all people,  sacrificially, as Christ did, Muslims, Jews, non religious, backsliders….better characterized  known as ‘disobedient ‘ Christians….atheists, cynics,…Kartel, Trump, …. even if ‘ we can preach like Paul ‘, our Christianity will make a lot of noise, trigger a lot of headlines ( and even beyond the headlines) but will achieve little in the struggle against evil.

So let us resolve to pray earnestly, and live,  the words of that wonderful hymn.
Breathe on me O breath of God,

Fill me with life anew.

That I may love what thou dost love.

And do what thou wouldst  do…..first verse.
Three, that which  has foiled evil ever since, and before, the church was established by our Lord Jesus, is the fervent prayers of the righteous.  Sinners justified by the Blood of Christ, and counted righteous by God!
A mystery. But a profund truth. And in the same way that our Lord Jesus Christ committed Himself to a life of fervent prayer….his sweat was like drops of blood as He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane…..we too, as His disciples need to urgently and consistently engage in gut-wrenching, sweat-inducing prayer. For our nation. For the  non-religious. For Muslims. For Hindus. In love, and according to the various ministries and gifts given to each one, by the Holy Spirit. For the building of the Church and to the Glory of God. So that the Son of Man might be lifted up and all who believe in Him may receive eternal life…..the Gospel lesson from John 3, appointed for our church tomorrow.
And who knows if the Lord will send One single Angel to rescue Jamaica, and America and other parts of the world from evil.

Peace.

#ASHWEDNESDAY  MESSAGE ABOUT SIN AND GOD’S MERCY

So Lent is back with us. So quickly!  Wow. #AshWednesday.  Dust to dust. Ashes to ashes; marked on our foreheads  to remind us of our mortality. Fasting! But also Feasting. As we look forward to the glorious Easter. So we give up, and take on. In Jamaica. And in America.

All because of Sin!

Which is what led a 16 old high school girl, recently in Jamaica, in a fit of rage, to go home for a knife, after an argument, return and plunge that instrument into another young girl. Murder!

And no amount of sophistry about ‘ how she was ‘socialized’, can deny the reality of sin causing her to commit murder.
So what is sin? A very uncomfortable term in today’s modern world! I began writing last night, and as I  woke, gave thanks for another day,  and started writing again, Oswald Chambers spoke. Again!
First a quote from Stalker- a contemporary of his and a poet. An extract from :

THE BASE IMPULSE
” But, ah, through all men some base impulse runs

The brute the father, and the men the sons

Which if one harshly sets himself to subdue,

With fiercer indolence it boils anew,

He ends the worst who with best hopes began,

How hard it is this, how like the lot of man!

THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE FALL – 1

It is said, it was because Adam ate the apple that he was lost or fell. I say, it was becuase of his claiming something for his own, and becuase of his, I, Mine, Me, and the like.

Had he eaten seven apples, and yet never claimed anything for his own, he would not have fallen: but as soon as he called something his own, he fell, and would have fallen if he never had touched an apple.
( pretty much what Jesus said about listing after your neighbors wife….sin. Even if you don’t touch her. That’s what got David in trouble. Long before he ‘ interfered’ with Bathsheba!…my thoughts)
Chambers continues:
What is true of Adam is true of every man and woman, and ‘ not all mankind could amend his fall, or bring him back from going astray’.

This inheritance of covetousness is the very essence of the Fall, and no praying and no power of man, singly or banded together, can ever avail to touch it; the only thing that can touch it is the great Atonement of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Lust and covetousness are summed up in the phrase, ‘ I must have it at once and for myself’.

It is an absolute flood in the nature of man, it overtakes his spirit, it overtakes his soul and body…..manifesting itself sometimes in sordid ways…..sometimes suppressed….but it is always there….
Comment: That’s why one of  foundation truths of Christianity is that :” All  ( from Adam) have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God…..and the wages of Sin is death, but the gift of God is Eternal Life in Christ Jesus “. Romans 3:23 & 6:23.

My God, how wonderful Thou art,

Thy majesty, how bright;

How beautiful Thy mercy seat

In depths of burning light!
How dread are Thy eternal years,

O everlasting Lord,

By prostrate spirits day and night

Incessantly adored!
How wonderful, how beautiful,

The sight of Thee must be;

Thy endless wisdom, boundless power,

And glorious purity!
O how I fear Thee, living God,

With deep and tender fear;

And worship Thee with trembling hope,

And penitential tears!
Yet, I may love Thee, too, O Lord,

Almighty as Thou art;

For Thou hast stooped to ask of me

The love of my poor heart!

Along with :

” For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Christ,   so that the his  life  may be revealed in our mortal body “. 2. Cor. 4:11

All of this as I contemplated what sin has done to our world. To our relationships. As, with many others in Jamaica and in the USA, I pondered on whether or not US Attorney General Jeff Sessions perjured himself before Congress. Lied. Sinned.
And whether or not Kartel, recorded new music in prison,  still a live issue in Jamaica, and someone is not telling us the truth. Lying. Committing a sin.
How we are ever going to put a stop to murder?  And corruption. In Jamaica! Both manifestations of Sin which is destroying our once peaceful land.
And #rompinshoponthebus style behaviour in the schools between ‘hypersexual’ boys and girls. Sin.

One teacher told me recently that she styles herself as ‘ #BirthControl. Because she deliberately inserts herself from time to time in the male bathroom. The scene of ‘ action’, in the school!

#Whereitsat.

And so as I ” read my Bible – and other divinely inspired works –  to see what men ought to do; and read my newspapers to see what men are doing’, these thoughts came and found expression on Facebook.

 FACEBOOK  TWO
We entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God – 2 Cor. 5:21  One of the readings for #AshWednesday in my church

What do you make of this?

#Lent a time for repentance – a road which leads to reconciliation with God in and through Christ Jesus. For since #TheFall – when all of mankind’s forefather Adam sinned, all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God

The Bible is the only book that tells us anything about the originator of sin…… When we are convicted of sin, we are convicted of the need of a Saviour……

According to the Bible, God is only manifested at the last point; when a man is driven by personal experience to the last limit, he is apt to find God.

The same thing is true of thinking, we can do very well without God in thinking as long as we think only as splendid animals.

As long as we are not at the last place, not facing our problems at all, but simply pleased to be in existence, alive and happy, we will never find God,  we do not see any need for Him.

But when we are driven to thinking to the last limit, then we begin to find that God manifests Himself there.

To people who are satisfied on too shallow a level the Bible is a book of impertinences, but whenever human nature is driven to the end of things, then the Bible becomes the only Book, and God the only being in the world.

Perhaps Jeff Sessions and even Donald Trump might soon appreciate this truth……and not hold on to #alternatetivefact.
Final  comments:
One of the great joys of life, and why repentance and #AshWednesday #Lent #GoodFriday and #Easter and #Christmas….a package… are so important, is revealed in the words of the Hymn.
For : How wonderful, how beautiful,

The sight of Thee must be;

Thy endless wisdom, boundless power,

And glorious purity!……God is a Holy God, and cannot countenance Sin. Nor sinful man.
And yet:

Yet, I may love Thee, too, O Lord,

Almighty as Thou art;

For Thou hast stooped to ask of me

The love of my poor heart…..in and through the Atonement of Christ, wrought on Calvary… “Very God, from Very God “. All because of God’s great love and mercy!
That’s why grateful Christians:
” For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Christ,   so that the his  life  may be revealed in our mortal body”. ….and spread across the entire world.
So that all mankind….Kartel, Sessions, Trump, Obama, Usain Bolt, Messi, LeBron, Currie, Viola Gray, Will Smith, Prince Harry, Andrew Holness, Peter Phillips….all of us, including and especially my family and I, thank God for Jesus, ( and St. Paul, and all the Saints who taught us to love Jesus) ….  may not perish but have everlasting life. That’s what Lent is all about.
May we then engage in a Holy Lent,  and earnestly repent on behalf of self and nation. And who knows, perhaps the Lord in His mercy may send times of ‘ refreshing’ on us. Where ever we are in the world!

Peace

Trump, Kartel and Christ is Sufficient

Cry the beloved country“, is the title of a book about the plight  of black  South Africans during the Apartheid era. It evokes memories of  the legendary Steve Biko, and others, who paid the ultimate sacrifice in their struggle for, freedom and justice.
And as I began writing about my beloved country Jamaica, and the country where my children and grandchildren live, the USA, the title  came into my head. As tears are flowing, prayers are being offered up, and much debate is happening about the fact that, to quote Shakespeare ” Something is rotten in the state of Denmark”.
For, as in Hamlet, not just ghosts, but demons, ‘ have climbed over the walls of the palace’, and entered into the hearts of our people. In America. In Jamaica.
How else can you explain  the bizarre behaviour of Donald Trump and his team, which has caused so much ” chaos and confusion ‘, in America? After just one month in office! And the rise to power of Steve Bannon who reportedly said that,  ‘ darkness is good’.
How else can you explain the continued high murder rate in my country. A blot on our nation’s conscience,  which ‘ caught in its web’, the 90 year old defenseless Peter Abrahams; a South African who made Jamaica his home, and  contributed so much to national development. But then sadly,  to our everlasting shame, only to perish at the hands of the wicked.

Must we then not ” Cry about our beloved, and adopted country”.

Must we not cry, when, rushing to defend their ‘ god ‘, the internationally acclaimed dancehall artist, Vybes Kartel, hundreds of people took to social media to denounce, and even to threaten with rape and death, a Jamaican parliamentarian, Lisa Hanna.
All because she had the ‘ temerity’ to suggest that songs of murderers, Kartel is serving time for murder, ought  to be banned from being played on radio. A story that provoked a lot of discussion about whether or not people in jail ought to be allowed to record songs in jail, have them played on radio and earn an income from that activity.
Must we not cry, when the defenders of America’s hard fought for democracy, the Free Press, is increasingly coming under attack from the Trump administration. All of this happening in the context of threatened mass deportation of even naturalized citizens of the USA, who have broken the law. Even a traffic violation! In the ‘ home of the free and the land of the brave’.
Must we not cry when the wicked abduct and rape and kill, and throw the bodies of  our young girls into bush like garbage ; and evil men molest our children. Thus inspiring one of our popular social media activist Dr. Michael Abrahams to produce a very probing,   no holds barred song,  entitled ” Break the Silence”.

@dennisbroox @kalilahe A dem song deh fi get awards….Michael Abrahams song on sexual abuse. Best song I’ve heard in a while.

And in the midst of this madness the Lord sent a timely word into my heart one night. And which I posted on Facebook.

Then found this in The Complete Works of Oswald Chambers:
Except the Lord build the house, they  labour in vain that build it : except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. Ps.127:1
So it’s not just the music alone gone bad……but:
“…If I do not countenance God in every relationship of my life I shall end in disaster”…...
……In prison……25 with five children…….murderer…..transactional sex….sex with young girls……daggering…..get on baad….I loose…..tempted to touch……corruption #WhyNationsFail  ….creating  and sustaining garrisons…..mommy where is daddy…..daddy let go of mommy’s hair…..DADDY! …..paying less than the minimum wage……going on preretirement leave as the pickney dem too bad……#transrights #FreeKartel  ….what have we done with our country……the world #SteveBannon #chaosanddarkness
Perhaps we ‘ talk but in vain’ as the blind cannot lead the blind. God help Jamaica. And the world!

#BedtimeDevotions

And after that another ‘gift’ from the Lord came by way of a reminder of a meditation from Francois Fenelon ( 1651 -1715….a former Archbishop in the Church and a deeply devotional man).
I pray God that our people may immerse themselves in truths like these. For setting up  Kartel and Trump, as your ‘ gods ‘  will only lead to chaos and confusion. And lead to  wickedness ‘ climbing over the walls of the palace ‘. Thus causing us  to cry for our beloved countries.

UNCEASING DEPENDENCE: CONTINUAL PEACE – ABRIDGED
Francois Fenelon
Verse: Levitucus 25:21 ( About the year of The Jubilee…..and remember that ” All of God’s promises are ‘Yes ‘in Christ Jesus.

Do not dwell upon remote events; this anxiety about the future is contrary to the religious state of  mind. When God bestows  any blessings upon you, look only to him in the comfort that you receive it, and take every day the manna that he sends you, as the Israelite did, without making yourself any provision  for the morrow.
A life of faith produces two things. First, it enables you to see God in everything . Secondly, it holds the mind in a state of readiness for whatever may be his will. We must trust to God for whatever depends upon him, and only think of being faithful ourselves in the performance of our duties.
This continual,  unceasing dependence, this state of entire peace and acquiescence of the soul in whatever may happen, is the true, silent martyrdom of self. It is so slow, and gradual, and internal, that they who experience it ate hardly conscious of it.

Comment: If read carefully and understood and obeyed, this reflection will go a long way to explain how we arrive at the ultimate goal of the Christian journey, viz, “ I have been crucified in Christ. Nevertheless I live. Yet not I but Christ who lives in me. Galatians 2.
Finally it will also help us to understand that all the meditations in the world, all the blogging that we do, are of little moment when compared to what Karl Barth reflected on. And about which I posted this message on Facebook this week.

FACEBOOK TWO
My ‘ song in the night ‘ last night was, ” My grace is sufficient for you”.
And as I read the passage this morning, nestled in the words of the  Holy Scriptures,  was this quote from Peter Marshall;  a former chaplain of the  United States Senate.
God is sufficient for all our needs, for every problem, and for every difficulty, for every broken heart, and for every human sorrow“.
Then on the next page this extract from one of the most prolific writers of all the theologians – Karl Barth..…a German theologian and contemporary of Bonhoeffer – a Christian martyr and theologian  in Nazi Germany. ( And but for the grace of God we would all be speaking German now….if alive at all)
“……..Some of you may have heard that in the last forty years I have written many books, some large. I will freely and frankly and gladly admit that these six words say much more and better things than all the heaps of paper with which I have surrounded myself. They are enough – which cannot be said even remotely of my books…..and when my books are long since  outdated and forgotten, and every other book in the world with them, these words will still shine with everlasting fullness. ” My grace is sufficient for you’. #earlymorningdevotions  and  #biblestudylastnight #fakenews  #alternatetivefact

So as we cry about our beloved countries, let us never forget that ” My grace is sufficient for you “.

In Kartel’s Jamaica and Trump’s America. And will continue to be sufficient long after they have gone.

As: ” For all flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flowers of grass.  The grass withers and the flower falls, but the Word of the Lord endures forever.”

Peace.

The Word of God Trumps  Donald, Pence and even Death.

It’s not that the continued  bizarre behaviour of  #DONALDTRUMP ….leaving VP Mike Pence out of the loop, and his now infamous press conference…. didn’t catch my attention this week.
Nor the continued acts of egregious wickedness resulting in murder in Jamaica and the spread of  #fakenews on social media!
Nor the death after a long struggle with illness of a dear childhood  friend.
But when the Lord sends His Powerful Word, ” which sustains all things….speaking about Christ in Hebrews 1:3…..that Word trumps everything else.

THE WORD OF GOD IN CONTEXT
The children of Israel were in desperate straits. God had ‘ hardened Pharaoh’s mind’, and so with his powerful army he chased down God’s people who seemed to be in ‘ chaos and confusion ‘ by The Red Sea. Pretty much according to a script written  by Trump’s right hand man, Steve Bannon. Alternative facts were about to replace reality, and not even Vice President Pence was ” in the loop”.
Or in the Jamaican context. Evil hovered mightily over the place. Girls were about to be abducted, raped and killed by wicked taxi men. Rampaging gunmen were about to kill everybody in sight…..even dog and puss.
So the once oppressed people, who had been rescued by mighty acts by God, became afraid. And ‘ longed for the security of slavery in Egypt’! Less they perish in this ‘ god forsaken’  wilderness at the hands of Pharoah. Read the account in Exodus 14 through the ‘ lens’, of your 21st century eyes and see if , Jamaica and The USA, both countries which owe their freedom to the Living God, do not ‘appear in the text’.
Together with the whole world which has been rescued from Sin and Death….and slavery, and war, and pestilence, and drought, and Tsunamis, and genocide, and wanton immorality, and injustice…..by the hand of The Living God. From the days of Noah to the Cross of Calvary. From the rampaging Muslim armies in early European history to Freedom from Apartheid in South Africa. From The Killing Fields of Pol Pot’s Cambodia to Peace  between Hutus and and Tutsis in Rwanda.
But God had a plan. ‘ I will gain glory for myself……and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord’. A blueprint for the relationship between sinful and what Satan would like us to believe ‘ God forsaken  humanity’.

Which is why rather than trusting in God in the midst of ” Tribal  War inna a Babylon ” … Bob Marley, we’ve decided to ‘ go back to Egypt….to our own devices…..in our struggles against evil or #MurderinJamaica and  the phenomenon of #DonaldTrumpallmexicansarerapists
And so the Eternal Word of God, from across the ages reminds us, in one of the most dramatic scenes in all of Scripture,  of The Power and the Intent and the mercy of The Living God.

” Moses answered the people. ‘ Do not be afraid.  Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you only need to be still.”. 14:14-14.

And as they say, ‘ The rest is history’.
So when we are confronted by an even greater act of mercy, Christ’s death on Calvary ‘…..for the sins of all mankind’ and yet yearn to ‘ go back to Egypt ‘ in the face of danger, or to enjoy the flesh pots, ought we not to be heart broken with remorse. A challenge which I was to led to write about on Facebook this week.

FACEBOOK ONE

Experimentally the meaning of life  is to attain the excellency of a broken heart, for that alone entails repentance and acceptance, the two great poles of the Bible revelation.

” The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit ” ( Ps. 51:17) why, – we don’t know, but God has made it so. The one thing we are after is to avoid getting a broken heart – Oswald Chambers ” The Base Impulse ”

#BedtimeDevotions
I don’t think I have  ever understood the need of the human heart for Christ’s healing love and mercy  explained as profoundly as this. Deserves a ” Grammy Award”, especially on a night like this. Especially doing ministry ‘ in a time such as this ‘ #MurderinJamaica.

Comment: A time for serious introspection.  How deeply do we grieve for our own sins, and for the  sins of the nation?  Are we really ‘ brokenhearted ‘ before a merciful and Holy God?  Or are we just angry and determined to do better and ‘ right every wrong’. Stop the violence. Make men understand that women are not to be ‘ objectified’, not to be seen merely as ‘ sex objects’, nor as chattel to be ‘ owned’. Get more involved. Join the March.  Wear black. All good thoughts.

However Oswald Chambers suggests that in the face of the reality of a compassionate God, who in Christ died on Calvary for our sins, repentance and a crying to God for mercy, is a much better way to rescue our beleaguered nation.
As I ponder these things in my heart, the other powerful Word from the Lord places a bookend on this message

” Now,  Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.  Stretch out your  hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”

 Acts 4:29-31. NIV

The context. In the time of the early church; persecution. In our 21st century times; persecution still rages. In different forms. Where is God? Does He not see the suffering of our women and children? Why did He allow Donald Trump  to beat Hillary Clinton. All Pastors are like those caught molesting young girls…..we don’t trust the church. Forget about them…..we’re on our own in this struggle……the church is irrelevant in today’s modern world.
And so our challenge in the Church today, is to follow the example of the early church. And repent of our many sins, what we have done….fall into temptation….sexual and other sins;  and what we have left undone….ignored the wretched of the earth in their  suffering….lacking in compassion to to those who speak ill  against us, and persecute us and do evil…..how many of us are praying steadfastly for Donald Trump……

In other words…..a broken and contrite O God you will not despise!

And then, appeal to God in the midst of the trials and challenges of life. For His healing mercies!
The question is; do we still believe that God can do the impossible in Jamaica.  And in the USA….and across the world in Aleppo and in Palestine? And do we still pray in our churches with this kind of faith….so that the very church walls  ‘ tremble’ with ‘ signs of the Holy Spirit. Or are we just going through the motions! God have mercy.  Christ have mercy.

I leave you with two short Facebook posts. Neither one requires much comment, as both of them in essence call us to ” Look to Jesus, and ye be saved”. And stop depending on Egypt!

You need to watch this video after reading Exodus 14. Especially ” But Moses said to the people, ‘ do not be afraid , and stand firm, and see the deliverance that the Lord will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians you see today you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you. You only have to keep still”.

For God is indeed a ” miracle working God”, Who can do the impossible. #MurderinJamaica. #Violenceagainstwomen

The Moravian Church, Murder in Jamaica, Trump in America and The Living God

A CHURCH IN CRISIS, A NATION BLEEDING AND WORSHIPING ONLY THE LIVING GOD

Other issues occupied centre stage in my mind this week, including the ‘ phenomenon  ‘ that is Donald Trump.

A reality that the Americans, and unfortunately the rest of the world will just have to live with for now. And which sense of shame and utter amazement was best  captured in post on Twitter by one of America’s rising stars #Goldenglobe.

Not the #merylstreep one which was so controversial  – and she was basically venting about Donald Trump- but Viola Davis whose comments were ‘ deep’. ” We need to understand a people who could elect a man like Trump”…my summation.

However murder in my country, 34 dead in 11 days,  as revealed  a couple days ago on the  popular public affairs television programme #AllAngles aired on #TVJ, and the continued revelations of shocking acts of  immorality  – and apparently  an attempted cover up – in the Moravian Church, caught my attention.
A situation which  explains in a profound way, two quotes which the Lord led me to discover and place at the beginning of a Sunday night email ‘ blog’. Which has been  ongoing for many years. And to which ministry has been added these whatsapp messages.

” I read my Bible to see what men ought to do; and read my newspapers to see what men are doing”
” Lord renew thy church beginning with me; Lord renew the church that the church may renew the nation(s).”

Finally,  by way of introduction of this message, every so often, in different ways, the Lord would wake me up at 4:00 am to read His Word. Opening the Bible randomly. And then to write. This is one of those mornings. And in the name of Jesus,  this is what caught my eye.
THE WORD OF GOD

“But you—come here, you children of a sorceress, you offspring of adulterers and prostitutes!

Who are you mocking? At whom do you sneer and stick out your tongue?

Are you not a brood of rebels, the offspring of liars?
You burn with lust among the oaks and under every spreading tree; you sacrifice your children in the ravines and under the overhanging crags…….

“Whom have you so dreaded and feared that you have not been true to me, and have neither remembered me nor taken this to heart?

Is it not because I have long been silent that you do not fear me?

I will expose your righteousness and your works, and they will not benefit you.
When you cry out for help, let your collection of idols save you! The wind will carry all of them off, a mere breath will blow them away.
But whoever takes refuge in me will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain.”  And it will be said: “Build up, build up, prepare the road! Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people.”
For this is what the high and exalted One says— he who lives forever, whose name is holy: “I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.
I will not accuse them forever, nor will I always be angry, for then they would faint away because of me— the very people I have created.  I was enraged by their sinful greed; I punished them, and hid my face in anger, yet they kept on in their willful ways.  I have seen their ways, but I will heal them; I will guide them and restore comfort to Israelʼs mourners,  creating praise on their lips.
Peace, peace, to those far and near,” says the Lord . “And I will heal them.”
But the wicked are like the tossing sea, which cannot rest, whose waves cast up mire and mud.  “There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.”

Isaiah 57:3‭-‬5‭, ‬11‭-‬21 NIV

http://bible.com/111/isa.57.3-21.NIV

To plumb the full depths of this very profound word from the Lord would require serious Bible study which is beyond the scope of this ministry.
However it doesn’t take much insight to understand the revelation that ” the One who dwells in high and lofty places”, The Living God, hates idol worship. And disobedience!

Both of which – ‘ stripped down to metal’, or ‘ at the heart of the problem’ –  have led to the sorry state of affairs in the Moravian Church. And also the main reasons for the heinous crimes being committed across the length and breath of my country.
And thought which inspired the following tweet:

#thebanalityofevil one day what you worship if not Christ will ‘ bite you’ #sex #power #denomination #politicaparty #whistleblowing #money :

was the subject of a warning which appeared in a previous message:
Abridged Excerpt

David Foster Wallace – American award winning best selling post modern novelist……known for his boundary-pushing story telling……A few years before he died he shared this at a commencement speech at a college:
“Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some kind of god….to worship….is that pretty much anything you worship will eat you alive.

If you worship money and things, if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough, never feel you have enough……
It’s the truth. Worship your own body and beauty and sexual allure, and you will always feel ugly. And when time and age start showing, you will die a thousand deaths before (  your loved ones) finally plant you….

Wallace was by no means a religious person, but he understood that everyone worships, everyone trusts in something for their salvation, everyone bases their lives on something that requires faith. A few years after giving that speech, Wallace killed himself. And this non-religious man’s parting words to us are pretty terrifying.

” Something will eat you alive “.

Because even though you might never call it worship, you can be sure you are worshiping and you are seeking.
And Jesus says” Unless you are worshiping me, unless I am the center of your life, unless you’re  trying to get your spiritual thirst  quenched through me and not through  these other things, unless you see that the solution must come inside rather than just pass by outside,  then whatever you worship will abandon you in the end – Rev. Timothy Keller extract from

 ” Encounters with Jesus ”

The message then for Jamaicans, for Americans,  and indeed the whole world, is be careful what or who you worship.
For,  if like the children of Israel, rescued from the ‘ hand of Pharaoh ‘, by He who called them to Himself to live in a Covenant relationship ( Deuteronomy 32 is a fascinating history lesson….they sacrificed to demons, which are not God, gods they had not known….which is the same accusation in Isaiah 57….the more things change…..), we who are created in His Image and Likeness, and ‘ washed in the Blood of the Lamb, continue to worship power and sex and denomination and political leaders and music instead of The Living God, then ‘grief’ will happen sooner or later. As certain as ‘ night follows day’! Whether in the Church or outside the Church.
No wonder then that  this warning came into my mind this morning as I pondered on these things. From memory:

” If your right hand offendeth thee….cut it off. For it is better to enter the kingdom of with one hand than to be cast into hell…..”

So people be careful about #ObamaFarewell; listen carefully but do not join in #4moreyears.

Be careful about who you elect to #makeamericagreatagain as only God Almighty can perform that miracle according to His plans.
Be careful about #Prosperity and #Progress and in whom you place your trust.
Be careful about protecting deviant Pastors from shame and disgrace. Men who no longer ‘ fear God’.  And be more concerned about about being obedient to The Living God.

Otherwise when you cry out in trouble He will say,  ‘ let your collection of idols deliver you’.
For too long now,  as a people,  we have worshiped ‘demons’ in our music, in our culture, in our politics, in our homes, and in our communities. Idols on radio, on TV, in the movies, and on the Internet,  rather than the Living God. And now ‘ the chickens have come home to roost’,  in the form of murder most foul,  and unbridled and widespread  immorality.
Thank God for Jesus, for He who dwells in high and lofty places also  is with ‘ those who are contrite and humble in spirit.
For, in Christ Jesus, the Good News of the Gospel, we know that Peace and forgiveness is available for all who repent. Thus fulfilling the Isaiah prophesy that:
” I will not always accuse, nor will I always be angry; for then the spirits would grow faint before me.”
Finally in the midst of the madness came this ‘ word ‘ from a Christmas hymn. It just came into my mind. Just like that!
” Hush ye men of strife and hear the angels sing”. From,  as I searched and found,  ” It came upon a midnight clear….”

And as I spent some time meditating on this profound hymn:
The Third  Verse

Yet with the woes of sin and strife

the world has suffered long;

beneath the angel-strain  have rolled

two thousand years of wrong;

and  man, at war with man, hears not

the the love song  which they bring;

O hush the noise and cease your strife

and hear the angels sing!

I was led to the angels singing in the Book of Revelation:

To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and glory and power, for ever and ever ! 5:13

And so as God is renewing the Moravian Church, and Jamaica even in the midst of murder, and America in ways we cannot fully understand, but time will tell, let us worship only He who dwells in high and lofty places. Even Christ Jesus the Crucified One.
Otherwise, literally ‘ all hell ‘ may break out in your life. And you will only have your idols – who cannot walk or talk – to deliver you.
Peace
